What's stopping someone deliberately striking a player and then claiming he was just going for the ball or making it look like he was??? You know how hard that would be to prove either way based on a video and a player's word?? So in that regard I agree with you... I'd like to see the AFL relax this rule more, but from where I sit, I don't see it happening, especially with the players association looking out for player safety more these days.

You completely miss the point again...he WAS going for the ball, what is he supposed to do? Let Edwards mark it unopposed?

Hoggy,

But his actions were wreckless, and UNFORTUNATELY... (I don't necessarilly agree with it;)) it looks like the kid is going to miss a Grand Final because those are the rules, however lame they may be.

Cheers!!

His actions were reckless. And he used undue force.
They are clauses in striking charges. Sorry but it was a fair sentence.

Since when do defenders use a feather touch when they are attempting to punch the ball away?

If Phil Matera got off for whacking Lockyer than Cloke should be proclaimed Mother Teresa.

The maggies will appeal and nothing will change. Maybe a 1 week but hes still gonna miss. Now for Cloke he misses the 1st round right but he will still be in contention for next years brownlow correct?

Hoggy,

I actually agree with you there.... Matera was very lucky to escape punishment from that incident!! That is precisely where the AFL gets it wrong... they aren't consistant enough in either the charges laid or the penalties they dish out.

Cheers!!

gPhonque,

A mate of mine here at work who is a die-hard Collingwood supporter reckons Jason Cloke's actions were wreckless and that he deserved to get rubbed out.

It was a Preliminary Final.

The guy jumped up in a marking contest and tried to punch the ball.

He missed.

2 weeks?

What a joke.

Thats irrelivent. That also should have copped a suspension. We all know that the AFL doesnt have any consistancy.

2 weeks was a FAIR sentance. I know he didnt mean it, but that is beside the point.

So you condone suspending players for accidental contact in a hard and tough physical sport?

And you condone the fact that a young player in his first season is going to miss a Grand Final for an incident that you just stated was completely accidental?

We've been agreeing a bit lately.........don't go and **** it up. ;)

hmmmmmmmmm neville crow miSsed out on a flag cause he was suspended for NO contact on nicholls in which later nicholls aknowledged that it was to keep crowe out of the GF.
the tigers used this and went on to win the gf.
to all u pies supporters out there who are whining about cloke get two things straight here he made a reckless attempt to spoil and has been found guilty accordingly. the video proved this beyond doubt end of story.

if their is one element where i can see the pies beating the lions this week surely if they follow the example the tigers did for crowe then they are in with a chance.
use cloke,s situation to your advantage not a sulking match.

cheers!

I can guarantee that if a player follows what you said they wouldnt get a game the next week.

You can contest a mark without belting a bloke in the face.

LOL! I am trying not to mate ;)

The thing is that, although the contact was accidental, it was reckless.
It was reckless and was done with undue force. My point here is, according to the rules of the game, and the striking law, these clauses are in there, it is just unfortunate for a player like Cloke to have it happen to him at such a stage.

To be honest he probably would have gotten less of a sentence or none at all if the player was not injured in the incident.

Much like the Bickley incident, if the player had not been injured, he would have got given more of a lenient sentence.

For something that's reckless, yes.

Brisbane are loving all this. While Collingwood is distracted by the 'Cloke Affair' for another precious day the Lions just keep their focus on the job at hand.

I cannot believe Collingwood are launching an appeal. Surely they gave it everything they had in the first hearing.

At some point Clokey has just got to accept that what he did was illegal and stop looking to lay the blame elsewhere.

Brisbane's odds are shortening as this issue lengthens.

I don't think that has occurred too much yet, and the Pies had to appeal as even though the likelihood of him getting off is about 5%, it's odds worth speng $15 000 on. Once the appeal has been decided however, that should be it. If Collingwood did a Sydney and went to court it would stink up the Grand Final.

Mind you after reading today's Herald Sun, who cares what his mum thinks, Cloke definitely wasn't the victim in this incident!

From todays Herald-Sun

"To see your son with his heart broken and know there's nothing you can do to fix it, it tears you apart," said a tearful Mrs Cloke.

She said the phone had not stopped ringing with fans, players, family and friends offering support.

A condolence book lies next to the phone so she can record the messages

Has anyone rung up to get their name in the condolence book ?
When he dies, will his mum get people to sign a Footy Record ?
