Rumour Jeremy Finlayson under investigation - 3 game suspension

You can't count Qld, they're a different breed up there.

I grew up all through the 70s and 80s in Vic and a couple of years at the end of the 80s in WA and the word was never used.

I lived in Cairns and Toowoomba in the 90s and the only time I ever heard it used was as the name of grandstand.
We're a couple of decades behind, sure.

I don't think anyone is saying that the N-word was in common use in the latter half of the 20th century, btw.

I appreciate this one’s a sensitive topic, but always good to check priors against the actual data.
AIHW data from 2019 shows pretty clearly that the rate at which gay men have ‘suicidal thoughts’ or make ‘suicide attempts’ is less than the rate for men as a group.

You missed my point though.
The rate is huge, yes.
There's no explanation on why though.

If they said it's directly from homophones bullying then that's a different story

Clarkson should have copped the same penalty as Walker. Would have made this case pretty simple.

But because the AFL are a joke and constantly contradict themselves, who knows what they’ll come up with. My guess is they’ll split the difference and give him 3.

Sticks and stones no longer applies in 2024 obviously but surely words said on field have to be pretty to warrant an investigation. Cup of concrete needed
Which is an easy thing to believe as long as you are in the majority power position and in the normie group.

Who is mocking a little kid by saying "Go home and bang your wife in the missionary position whitie"

Absolutely we did not use it in the way the Americans used it.

We had other far far more common words used towards the Aboriginal population in the way back when.

The N word was not one of them.

In my experience as an adult through the mid 70s to now, Id say you’re both correct but there were circumstances where it was and wasn’t used.

The ‘N’ word was used as already identified in names of dogs, horses, cats, boats - there was even a Dulux colour ‘N…brown’, and was very occasionally used to describe a dark skinned person from another country - not just the US - more commonly Indians.

It was also used in nicknames but for whatever reason, rarely in day to day speech.

However in relation to dark skinned indigenous people here - the term ‘Dark13’ was far more prevalent, along with ‘A#$’ and ‘B#$*(‘.

British TV in the 70s was shameless in it’s use, however by 1976 the Punk/New Wave movement carried the Caribbean movement with it and the word became rapidly detested by all but Skinheads and Extreme Right Wingers in the UK - and TV stations wised up.

For what its worth, my high school had 2150 students the year I left…and I don’t recall ever hearing it used.

However my father certainly did - but he was a Pom.

Oh good. So it's all about the law and public sentiment. So no need to complain about countries where homosexuality is both against the law and unpopular - nor criticise Australia of old where homosexuality was illegal and unpopular.

BTW, what about bigamy and BDSM?
I can't work out if you're trying to stir the pot some more, or if you are actually referring to homosexuality as some sort of fad or trend?

They really stuffed it by wet lettuce-ing Clarko imo.
There are a few differences imo that warrant consideration that don't touch the race v lgbtq weighting that most are getting bogged down in.

The main factor is that Walker wasn't a participant in that SANFL game, he was just hanging around watching Crows ressies. So he should definitely not be getting involved and also being an AFL pro with a long career already behind him he should be setting a better example for the lower levels. Similarly with Clarko, wtf are you doing yelling at the opposition during a preseason game mate control yourself.

Because Findlayson was player v player AND he resolved it with apologising on the field before the club self reported I think the AFL may be more lenient than with Walker as there's no "power imbalance"

Were it up to me I'd have done like Walker 6 Clarko 6 Findlayson 4 (6 reduced 2 for leniency)

As it is now its Walker 6, Clarko wet lettuce, Findlayson ????? Who knows, because now the conversation has shifted to "what's worse" which is a PR nightmare for the AFL who of course mostly care about their image

Sam Kerr.

But you have a point though. Some comments hit a nerve. Some don't.

Unless there is a pressing reason to the contrary, his apology should be accepted and he should be given a 3 week suspension, suspended pending no incidents like this happen in the next five years.

Pretty logical, no?
Suspended sentences always feel like such a cop-out. It's a way of looking to be taking it seriously without taking it seriously.

Needs to be actual weeks.

AFL dismisses Clarkson comparison as Finlayson verdict looms - https://www.afl.com.au/news/1104987

AFL says they are not consistent.

Watch out. Perfect scenario, non Vic team. Non a grade player.
Clarko is a lucky little prick. Has got away with a hell of a lot. Probably should have gone to prison for the aitken king hit. Then the abuse at other lower level games etc. Also coaches having a go at players should be a total no go area. Way worse than player to player imo.

Hes had a very lucky run.

Agree, Tex got 8 weeks. He should have got the same at least

I reckon a week and a fine

If anyone said what he said in any other workplace they wouldn't have a job at the end of the day.

Needs to be more than a week i think.

NRL binned a guy for 4 weeks for the exact same word used. I think that would be a good message sent.
