One is the worst slur one can use relating to homosexuals, the other isn’t a great thing to say but nowhere near as bad.

I never said the first bit, I agree that what Finlayson said is about as bad as it gets for a gay person.

I do think Clarkson should have actually been suspended instead of having the suspended sentence. A coach approaching an opposition player directly during the match is already unacceptable, plus his previous form of behaviour means he really doesn't deserve any leeway or benefit of the doubt.

Sure . I don’t have a problem with that viewpoint, just the inference from the PA and Port (Koch) that both offences were equivalent to one another.

Additionally we don’t know the full context either re: the Finlayson one. What if the comment was directed at a player who was out to teammates and known to the AFL community as a homosexual?

Full context is no ones business (who it was directed to) either.

I'm probably sticking my neck out for no beneficial reason but uttering a slur, however horrendous, in the context of competition and not directing it to a gay person isn't the same as making a racist or homophobic to a person belonging in that community.

Yes, he deserved a ban. That kind of language should be stamped out of the game. However, he realised his mistake immediately, apologised and self reported. He showed genuine contrition. 3 weeks is way too harsh for a man who realised his mistake.

Like some people, I used C word many times in my life, I'm a mid aged man, but never directed at or near a woman. I hope people can be mature enough to understand context.

Jeremy showed character by owing up to it. But he will pulled on regardless now.
