Jericho surgery ends season
2:32:35 PM Thu 3 August, 2006
afc.com.au

Luke Jericho will not play again this season after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction on Thursday.

Jericho has been troubled by his right shoulder for most of the season while playing for West Adelaide in the SANFL.

Fitness coach Stephen Schwerdt said it was in Jericho’s best interests to have the surgery now rather than wait until the end of the season.

“The club’s medical staff, in consultation with the senior coach (Neil Craig) and Luke, thought now was the best time to have surgery,” Schwerdt said.

The recovery period from a shoulder reconstruction can be up to six months.

Said the same thing about Bodey when he had his shoulder surgery, is this a sign the club is willing to give him another year?

My thought as well, I cannot see why he would have his shoulder reconstructed if the club wanted to delist him.

If the club was considering delisting or trying to trade him surly the club would want to get a player or draft pick in return. I doubt they would have given up on him this early. To end his season now and get his shoulder ready for next season shows that the club (unlike some fans) has some faith in the kid football ability.

If the club was thinking about delisting him (wouldn’t they try and trade him as a first resort) Luke Jericho would need some value as to bargain with, having the recon now simply show the club is willing to keep him around.

I think the majority of fans have faith in his football ability, but that’s not really the deciding factor with Luke now is it?

We all know he's got talent; great speed and good hands, but that’s not good enough. He isn’t prepared to put in the effort required to play AFL footy and until he does I couldn’t care less whether he stays or goes. He’s just incredibly slack and I believe he’s had ample time to show the club he should be rewarded with another year.

How do you know that? I sure if he wasn’t putting the effort in, he would have been banished from West Lakes before now.

Commitment is one of the biggest attributes a footballer can have; with out any commitment anyone who is possessing to be a professional (at anything) will simply fail. Luke Jericho has put the effort in to developing his craft but it’s simply come down to being unlucky and not grabbing his opportunity when they arose (NAB cup grand final was his opportunity) and this season he hasn’t been able to get a second chance.

for the Crows IMO.

Sorry but will Luke Jericho be another Ian Perrie, Nathan Bock, Scott Steven (yes) Brent Reilly, Mathew Bode (and many more) all over again and have a few people with egg all over their face.

Not necessarily Macca23 but he has implied his day has come and gone.

would the crows fill his possie on the main list by elevating a rookie or leave it? I believe round up to rd18 can be used to elevate. Is this correct?

Thoughts please. :)

That will end his career with the Crows. :)

All the best for the Bloods in '07 Luke...

Either way he won't be at West next year, all reports were he wanted to move mid season but the Crows blocked it. Apparently he wanted to move to a team fairly close to your heart Drummond.

I seriously cannot be bothered arguing this because as far as I’m concerned, you are wrong.

If you can honestly say that he has put in maximum effort to "develop his craft" then you are deluded. It’s not that he’s been unlucky, it’s that others on the list have done all they can to please the coaching staff and to put their name up for selection, while he has accepted mediocrity. He didn’t grab his opportunity in the NAB Grand Final because he barely tried, his “efforts” in that game were probably the worst I have ever seen from an AFL listed player.

No point in elevating a rookie.

Two reasons:
  • Our injury list is quite short at the moment, with many current senior list players pushing for selection.
  • None of the rookies have shown anything to suggest that they are AFL ready. They are all spending the majority of their time in the SANFL reserves.

well lets hope they allow it end of season, the sooner he gets into a successful team where he isn't the Mr Fix it then sooner he will be back in Crows colours

however I have been told that Jericho has been informed that he will not be considered as a Forward at the AFC and he needs to work on his Ability to become a midfielder or defender

Once again I ask how the **** do you know.

You are simply judging someone output in a game situation on an ill-informed perception. You simply perceive him to be lazy and not putting in the effort because that what you see on a Saturday afternoon playing for the bottom side in the SANFL.

Do you go to training everyday? Do you get access to the inner sanctum of the football club and read the feedback he gets from Neil Craig or Allen Stewart (SANFL development manager)?

The Adelaide Crows have a history of sending players back to there SANFL club for a number of reasons if they are not happy with there output in games or during training (See your beloved Darren Pfieffer) why hasn’t he been sent back?

If he is lazy and not putting the effort in to be a good AFL player, why hasn’t this happened?

that says to me he might be staying on our list

I said at season start he would be the one to look at this year....well a shocker of a PS and injury have put paid to his year....but IMO not his career at the Crows.

I have said he is young and has some aspects to his game that are hard for the opposition to match-up on in the AFL...the Crows know that and that's why he'll be back in 07

This bloke is a very young player. Maturity may change the way he plays. He's got the talent as is worth retaining on the list if he wants to stay. He's out of contract at year's end.
His body language on the field is a worry. He looks as though he's not always in the same space as the other players. At times he looks as though he'd rather be elsewhere. Might be just the way he is, but I have a feeling he's still a kid and still growing up.
Let's hope he surprises us all in '07.

Well said :thumbsu:

Neil Craig when speaking about Scott Stevens made the comment that Scott knew his spot on the list was shaky , but he went to the coaching panel and said ''let me have a shoulder op and a one year contract and let me show you what I can do''

NC said that to him showed more than anything SS would do on the track that he wanted to play for the AFC.

Maybe this is the same with Jericho.

Personally I wouldnt , and I am prepared to have egg on my face.

I remember seeing him kick like 8 goals for West one day on ABC and thought "wow the Crows are lucky to have him". I guess he was just a one game wonder, nothing negative on Adelaides behalf. I think Adelaide would be much better off elevating Brad Sugars from the rookie list after seeing him on a couple of occasions up close and in action.
