It's kind of a lot like Judd & Ablett.

Bartel, like Judd, was one of the best footballers earlier in his career whereas Swan, like Ablett, became one of the best midfielders in the AFL later on in his career. I chose Dane Swan. Unfortunately I think Jimmy Bartel's star has fallen over the years.

Swan looks shot. Can't get into games against good teams at the moment. Have to say he was who Pendlbury was talking about.

Bartel easily for me.

Swans elite fitness and endurance keeps him top line and one of the best, whereas Bartel stays best through his football smarts and incredible skillset to be a clutch player.

You wouldn't find any Geelong supporter who would trade Bartel for Swan, and it's probably vice versa for Collingwood supporters.

Great thread though, and going by the poll results it seems like neutrals are finding it tough to split them.

Pretty damning footage of Swans efforts around stoppages opposed to Ablett last Saturday highlighted on Footy programmes through the week. Pretty poor efforts to be honest.

- Swan has been AA the last 4 seasons whilst Bartel has not even made the 40 man squad in 3 seasons (or the team in 4) - this is despite Geelong having record numbers in the squad - 5 last year, 6 the year before, 6 the year before that, etc.
- Whilst people have pointed out 1 Brownlow each, Swan has many more votes. He has been 1st, 2nd and 3rd the last three years. Bartel has been equal 48th (behind Grigg, McLean, Pearce, etc), equal 41st in 2011 (behind C.Sylvia, M.Robinson, etc) and equal 32nd in 2010 (behind Davey, Rischitelli, Boak, etc). Bartel hasn't cracked 10 votes for 4 years.
- Swan has been prominent in the Coaches votes whilst it seems Bartel has not been close to the top 10 in at least the last 3 seasons.
- Swan has won an MVP whilst Bartel has never been top 5
- Whilst a different side so limited comparative ability, Bartel has not featured prominently in a B & F for quite some time and has never won one.

Tbh in 2013 Swan would be behind Pendles, Cloke and Reid.

So 4th, obviously in previous seasons he was either our best player or number 2.

i reckon Swan will be remembered as the better player. lots of emphasis is placed on stats and Swan sure knows how to rack em up.


i'd take Bartel. seems to know when something extra is required and finds a way to produce. (adelaide game excluded)

if I could have either in my team it would be Bartel usually always lifts and gets his team over the line when it's crunch time. Swan may get more possies and things like that but Bartel is a lot more damaging IMO
