Jimmy Bartel or Sam Mitchell?

Jimmy has won a brownlow, two time premiership player and two time all australian. Expect him to return to his brownlow medal form this year when he returns to the middle full time.

Mitchell is a premiership captain but hasnt won much else individually. He is one of the best clearance players in the league and is a great leader. Still had an excellent season last year even though his team had a terrible year due mainly to injuries.

On the decline? Sure Bartells prob a BETTER player but I would take Mitchell before him every day of the week. Just love his handballs and clearance work. Should also prob say he's a premiereship captain and been a captain for (4?) years. Also he's not really a me me me player more of a team player so the individual awards wouldn't be an bountiful for him

Mitchells been more consistent over the journey and is obviously the much better leader.
Bartel won a brownlow but seriously was he better than others that year?

Right on amigo.

Pretty interesting comparison actually.

Mitchell has undoubtedly performed better over the last 2 years as a pure midfielder, though Bartel has played a lot down back recently covering for injuries so this isn't a particularly relevant distinction. In any case, Mitchell is a better credentialed clearance player, and is arguably the better inside player in general.

Bartel is arguably the superior all round player however, having the edge over Mitchell in terms of marking, field kicking, goal kicking and versatility.

mate make polls and be bias but dont spit out your bullshit about mitchell on the decline

and mitchells clearance work is the best in the league hands down

Mitchell's a better player because he's more consistant than what Jimmy is. Jimmy is a good player but gets distracted too easily

Hands down? No one player is hands down better at something than everyone else in the league. There will always be someone who does it pretty well also. Like Judd, Boyd, Watson and Lenny when it comes to clearances.

Dont agree with that at all, Id consider Bartels best assett is his consistancy. You may be referring to times when he gets responsibilities down back last year and went missing from the possesion charts.

Its a good poll, I cant split them. Mitchell can be extremely dangerous while Bartel can be moved to any position and make it his own.

Voted Bartel though for bias reasons.

Bartel is inconsistant.

Great post, Bartel is the better footballer, but Mitchell is prob more valuable. The best clearance player of the last 5-7 years. I love bartels toughness and skill tho, and if i was a geelong supporter i would prob pick him.

Close one, but Mitchell for me.
Love his work around the packs and his gut busting running.
Bartel is still a good player, although I believe he is overrated in terms of the accolades he has recieved.

I asked the question, is he on the decline. I didnt say he was and I dont even think he is I just wanted to know others thoughts.

I dont mean the OP to be bias, can maybe a Hawk supporter write a little paragraph simliar to Bartels on his achievements and make a little argument on why hes better?

Consistently stupid, right?

Right.

Haven't heard all that much about Mitchell from his supporters in this thread other than his clearance work and his leadership. The latter argument is a bit silly considering he's not even the real leader of the team, despite being the captain.

Anyway, Mitchell can have clearances and leadership. Jimmy can have kicking, marking, tackling, versatility, and goal kicking.

Still pretty close, but there's not doubt Jimmy is the more complete of the two.

Bartel for me. He's the type of player you would just love on your team. The most underrated footskills in the competition IMO.

Tough one to split even with my Hawthorn bias. Bartel is such a gun but you almost have to wonder what life would be like for him without Ablett, Ling, Corey and Selwood by his side. Mitchell's been our best midfielder for the last 5-6 years often a one-man show in a team that was pretty shit (02-06). I might have to give the vote to Sammy but only just.

Sorry but that is ridiculous. You could use that rationale for any mid in the competition. Should Simon Black or Adam Goodes been seen as inferior because they had strong players around them?

Yes he was. He was a massive favourite for the brownlow nearly all year. Ablett nabbed the favouritism off him in the last month or two.

And very hard to split.

Mitchell has to be the most underrated player in the game.

Constantly leads the comp in clearances (except for 2009 where he was injured and played in defence) and has great foot/hand skills. Also wins a lot of possession.

Mitchell>Bartel, and by some distance.
