Who's the better player In your opinion?

Ling is regarded as the best tagger in the comp. He's a master at it, and finds a fair amount of footy in a winning side.

Kornes on the other hand usually finds more of the ball than his assigment, a two time b&f winner-he is renowned for his posession footy.

Cameron Ling by shitloads. Maybe at his best you'd take Kane but right now it's Ling easily.

Kane Cornes has a Priddis like knack for getting big numbers that mean nothing. That's okay if he's shutting a bloke down, but does he even do that anymore? I didn't see the match but the 5th quarter mentioned Kornes was on Cooney who was close to BOG with 35 touches this weekend. If he's not shutting down a bloke, then like Rawlings at the Roos, you have to question why he's in the side as he does shit all with the ball.

That said I have plenty of respect for him just not his ball use. You can't question Kane's commitment and work rate, which is probably why he's taken home back to back B+F's.

Tagging aside, Lingy has more influence, on a lesser scale.

Would you even call Kane a tagger?

Anyone who saw his game on Saturday night, and for that matter most of his games this season, would realise what a fraud he is.

If he was more concerned about his team's performance he would play a hard tagging role instead of chasing cheapies across half back.

He gets a shitload of it because coaches realise he does nothing with it, and on the odd occassion will actually give the ball back to the opposition.

Watch him DEMAND the ball from a teamate even though he's in a worse position and then just bomb it long or turn it over, when the player with the ball was in a position to hit a target 40m towards goal.

Ling. But if you were going to pick a tagger based on this season I would go with Adam Selwood. Maybe even Daniel Jackson or Clinton Jones who have improved a lot this season.

A change in role wouldn't suprise me, but obviously he isn't that bad if he's won AA selection and 2 b&f's.

I can understand if people want to put Ling above Cornes, but FFS it's comments like these that show that TV just doesn't show the workrate that some players put out.

Kane Cornes - a fraud?? Ask Sam Mitchell (who struggles to get 20 possies against Cornes) or Simon Black (who struggles to get 15!). Ask Kerr or Judd at West Coast, Cornes invariably shut one or the other down and was a key to our top record against them.

He's almost as good a hard tag as Ling (but not quite IMO), but he has the "knack" of penalising his opponent by getting kicks himself, because his opponent is so hell bent on running away from him.

If you watch close enough (and I understand you don't get the chance to see him live), he runs just far enough away from his opponent to act as a link man, but clamp down on his opponent when the ball is turned over. Yes, he's not in stellar form (which Port player is at the moment?), and when you turn the ball over as much as Port have this year, then it shows on everyone, Cornes included.

Kane Cornes 2002-2005 >> anything great Ling has done.
Kane Cornes 2006-Present <<<<<<< anything bad Ling has done (including his junior years).

Kornes was a great tagger back when rules were more flexible and he wasn't stat chasing. His game nullifying Simon Black in the 2004 GF almost won him the JO medal, but for Pickett.

I agree he runs hard to get possessions - why isn't he running hard enough with his opponent?

He barely tags properly anymore...at a time when his team needs him to tag.

One of his best tagging games as you said was against Sam Mitchell in Tassie...he actually blanketed Mitchell and kicked 3 goals himself. Yet we rarely see him actually blanket a player anymore.

With his hard running he should be giving the ball off to players who can make the right decision kicking inside 50 but he doesn't.

That's not really a good argument for him. Makes it sound like he had to break the rules to be effective. Agree with you though, Kane at his best was much better than Ling.

good post

Ling played a big hand in changing the role of the tagger and how it is percieved. Keep in mind that in the 90's a "tagger" played a completely negative role. It was was a dirty word. Many did not see it as a legitimate form of play. Some even wanted it banned.

Ling was among the first players to find a way of tagging, while also winning a decent amount of ball himself and setting up plays. He is not as good a 'player' as many (Cornes included), but he couples offensive play and negative play really well, and has done so with incredibe consistency.

I don't think you can say Ling changed the role. The evolution of football changed the role. Every position is about possessions now. 10 years ago you wouldn't expect some of the top possession winners to be defenders like they are today. Kirk and Cornes started winning the ball as taggers just as Ling did. Kirk and Cornes probably did it before Ling anyway.

I was careful not to specifically single Ling out as changing the role, hence "had a hand" in changing the role. Secondly, you will find that Ling was playing his current tagging role early in his career, even as early as 2002-3. Cornes did not seem to play that role until 2004 and Kirk a similar time. All three are players who have adapted the role and innovated with the changing nature of the game. IMO Ling is marginally a forerunner.

You'd have to pencil Lingy in as the best tagger in the competition in the moment, trailed slightly by Jones and Jackson.

Yes, but Cornes and Kirk were the premier taggers at that stage. Ling only became elite at that role in 2006 onwards. I was more questioning that you thought a single player had changed the role from a defensive tagger to an offensive tagger. Every role in the game has become possession and attacking based. Even the best defenders are the ones who rebound from 50.

2009 Goals Tally:
Cameron Ling: 3
Kane Conres: 2

Not your most persuasive argument. Even over their careers I doubt Ling would be ahead by more than 30ish. Goals aren't that big of a deal for taggers.

Ling has quite often kicked them at crucial times and of course they are a big deal, any extra avenue to goal is welcome.

Ling 191 games 109 goals - 49 behinds
Cornes 174 games 71 goals - 62 behinds
