Hey mate, as an Essendon fan I want a fast, line-breaking midfielder. Who's the best candidate for that?

For what you are describing Will Hoskin-Elliot/ Liam Sumner/ Hayden Crozier would be the guys. Only problem for Essendon is that these players will likely all go reasonably high. Hoskin-Elliot should go top 10. Sumner around that 10 spot. And Crozier likely top 15.

Would likely need to trade into a higher draft pick to get one of these. Move up to pick 7/8 and you'll be able to get one of Hoskin-Elliot/Sumner.

At Essendon's current selection there really isn't the quality of line-breaking mid available or relevant for that selection. So a Taylor Adams or Devon Smith might be the more realistic targets at this stage for Ess.

Haven't seen him through the midfield at any stage.

Too good down back to have playing midfield though. Much more suited to playing down back and is a big time weapon back there. Think Heath Shaw where he adds that rebound through his pace + skills but can also hold his man.

Thanks for that. Maybe he can allow Lids to play as a midfielder and Houli on a wing if that's the case. If we have the choice of Docherty and McKenzie would Docherty be a better option?

Both can play and think both can have careers at the next level.

Docherty is the higher level backman. McKenzie is more of a versatile flanker/mid. Kicking is his standout attribute which I'm sure Richmond would welcome.

If I had to choose would go with Docherty.

But really depends on what you need more. Either could be nice selections for Richmond. Not a whole lot in it.

They could look a dalgliesh with their 2nd rounder. Ballarat boy with a massive kick, runs in the stahl gift so obviously has great pace. Loves to kick goals and is bit light on in size so probably won't play straight away.

Not wrong. Has some talent. 2nd round onward could be an option for an Essendon.

I would be very pleasantly surprised if Wingard went to 6. I agree Adelaide would take Grigg at 11 if available and I wouldn't discount Port taking him at 6 if Wingard was already gone. If GSW take Wingard early and Longer is available at 6 he'll be at Port no matter how badly we need midfielders.

Wingard would be a massive get for Port Adelaide. Recently Tyson has been rumoured as a GWS target then Buntine as a Gold Coast target. Longer is a logical pick at 5, so the chance is there for Wingard to fall. Will be very interesting to see where he lands and what order happens with those earlier selections.

For Port.A the likely picks will be out of Wingard/Tyson/Grigg/Longer in the 1st round at this stage.

When you look at it one of Wingard, Longer or Tyson will have to go to Number 6 you would think so Grigg is probably out of the mix on reflection and will go to the Crows at 11. Trade Period might shake it up though.

Depends if GC offer up pick 4 for o'meara, can't see Wingard sliding if that was the case.

No certainty. Gold Coast need to take Buntine - no guarantee. Might elect to go Wingard instead. Meaning none of Wingard/Tyson/Longer are available.

Tah. From what I've heard Adams is the one we'd be more likely to take. Would Ahmed Saad slip to our second pick?

Adelaide will make a play during trade week for several top 15-20 picks, intended or unintended. We will be gunning for pick #3/#4 in the draft for Wingard, and still maintain a pick in the top 20 I think. Interesting times ahead.

Knight...Hypothetically, should the Lions get the pick 16 of freo for Mitch Clark where do you see the lions in the draft with pick 8 & 16?

I still find it hard to potentially pass on a player like Hoskin-Elliot, but considering the lack of talls in our team I think it may be smart to draft in Elton at 8, and hope for Green to slide to 16 or even secure Talia for our KPD need...thoughts?

Also, on Elton, what sort of strength and aggression will he bring to the team as he develops? I really don't want a passive forward like what we got with Henderson and now have with Cornelius. We need a forward with a bit of mongrel in him if you know what I mean

I'm stuck between Docherty, Greene and McKenzie. Personally I'd like Greene as he can replace Tuck as his career is nearly coming to and end. But then people are saying that we should take Docherty or Mckenzie.
With our second rounder we should take Downie.
I seriously hope Waldhunter slides down to our 3rd rounder.
And Morris can be taken with our 4th rounder.

Great mock as always Knightmare, your knowledge of young talent on BF is second to none.

Quick query,
Waylen Manson is certainly an interesting proposition, with his height and athleticism you'd imagine he would have the capacity to go quite high in the draft.
However, given his reluctance to even nominate for the draft and the fact that he's from the Kimberley and has played limited games down in perth due to homesickness, can you actually see a team outside of W.A. willing to take him with an early pick. Obviously the talent is there, in spades, but given the recent cautionary examples of players such as Troy Taylor and to a lesser extent Harley Bennell would there be a reluctance on the part of recruiters?
I would love to see him at Freo, but as it looks that we may be trading our first round for Clark could you see him possibly sliding to our second round pick in light of these commitment concerns. For a refreshing change, Fremantle may be able to capitalise positively on it's location.

Distinct possibility - by virtue of having Gunston walk out on the club.

Highly unlikely, given that Tippett isn't going anywhere and nobody else on our list (or player/pick combination) would get us anywhere close.

Knightmare

Looking for small shut down defenders/midfielders (taggers)

Any names you could bandy around for me?

Also, add small forwards to the questions.

Have you seen Jack Crisp from Murray Bushrangers.
He is a midfieder, about 190cms and is a great tackler and can run all day.He was in the Vic Country team this year.Could easily play a Heppel type role.

Saad is an interesting one. GWS can access him and might just want to add him to the list.

As I understand it GWS have the ability to trade on those who have previously nominated for the draft as Gold Coast did last year but also have the ability to put them straight onto their list (which Gold Coast chose not to do).

If I understand right with the GWS concessions (happy to be corrected) then you could pretty easily trade your 2nd round selection for Saad if you so wished.

If he just nominates for the draft and doesn't get preselected or traded on then might even be able to get him in the 3rd round. But certainly in the 2nd round would think Saad would be gettable.

Haven't heard any of this. Would be interested if there is an article on this.

If true and Adelaide are going hard after Wingard then would take a hell of an asset to trade into that no.3 spot! Very rare for clubs to give up those early draft picks! But not unheard of.

Will be interesting to see who of value Adelaide fish. Particularly now that Vince has re-signed.

Rory Laird could be an option as a small defender. Jacob Carger also. Anthony Tipungwuti. Graham Jetta (WAFL).

Shut down mids: Jack Newnes - good linkup type who can play some shut down, Haydn Hector - with his endurance could go with just about anyone.

Small forwards: Devon Smith (Mid/Fwd), Nic Maric, Haiden Schlothe, Jamie Elliot, Tim Totevski (small tackling type).

Pick 8 I'd probably still look for best available. Maybe this is a Kavanagh or Hoskin-Elliot.

Elton could be considered at 8. I consider him an athlete combo key forward/ruck. More of an agile type rather than a big pack crasher at this stage.

If you traded into pick 16 there could be a few good options. Perhaps McInness or Talia are still available. Maybe Greene or Taylor Adams is still available. Some of the picks I have from 12 onward could all be realistic options at 16.
The one I'd probably look at really closely if still available would be McInness since he is that taller type who is probably best as a key back but can play some key forward or even ruck. Also physically think he will fill out well.

I'm stuck between Docherty, Greene and McKenzie. Personally I'd like Greene as he can replace Tuck as his career is nearly coming to and end. But then people are saying that we should take Docherty or Mckenzie.

Richmond for mine have a couple of those shorter mids. In terms of immediate production and ability to win the hard ball Greene would be a good option. Adams I also really like at that similar size as a midfield option.

Would personally go with Docherty or McKenzie for Richmond - maybe one is gone before your selection so you don't have to make the decision. Either could add something really important to your side.
Really comes down to what you decide you need more though.
McKenzie possibly the better fit for Richmond since I consider high level kicks possibly more of a need. Would not want to choose though!
Both quality prospects.

Really interesting question and it is one many will be talking about with relation to Manson.

Would have to be a club with the resources and right club culture to be if a Vic club is going to have any success with Manson.

Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn could all be appropriate Vic clubs who have the established leadership groups and right resources at their disposal to have a chance.

Also think Sydney or GWS could consider Manson. Sydney have a good club culture and with football coming second to Rugby in the city might be a chance - but unsure how he will fit into the big city.
GWS with Sheedy as coach also I expect would look into the risk. Possibly wouldn't have the leadership structure in place to get the best results but who knows.

WCE + Fremantle should certainly take a shot. Maybe in the 2nd round. Certainly 3rd if he lasts that long. Is a high level talent who has proven production behind him - so he can become as good as he wants to be.

The other unknown factors are his character and want to become a pro AFL footballer which hopefully we will find out more about around draft combine.

Any chance of the Bombers getting Grigg???
Also could you give me your thoughts on him :thumbsu:

Nah, no article of yet that suggests we will get one of those picks. It will be #4 if anything. A lot of jounro's have been suggesting if the out clause in Tippett's contract is true, we should be trying to move him early (for that pick #4) to GCS.

I reckon though, as the existence of this clause is yet to be proven, if he is traded this year, it exists, if not, it doesn't. If we don't trade him, or something suggests that we didn't try hard to move him, and the clause does prove to exist, that really is piss poor by our recruiting department.

If GCS are reluctant in trading as they know they will get him next year, we should try and move him to Brisbane. They have some nice picks in the top 16, as well as some good players that we could use. Tippett would be invaluable to them as well.

Don't get me wrong, if we some how manage to keep Tippett, I'll be stoked, but I'll be majorly peeved if AFC basically just let him leave.
