Kicking aside, Bampton reminds me a bit of Matt DeBoer who slid to the rookie draft in his year.

Limited inside midfielder with average speed and disposal whilst a high production ball winner.

As mentioned, kicking is the thing that will see Bampton taken inside the top 60 today.

fair assessment?

Hey KM just wondering what your thoughts on Duggan are? What is his pace like? his highlights reel reminded me of Andrew Gaff a lot but with a bit more hurt factor with his possessions. if there are no suitable KPP at Freos first pick I wouldn't be disappointed one bit if we went for him. Seems like a very draftable young man.

Duggan has good pace and can take on the game to an extent but isn't a freak linebreaker. Duggan is something like Gaff with more versatility and more of an inside game without the same ability to find that same quantity of ball on the outside and without that same elite endurance. Duggan perhaps has slightly more penetration on his kick but I Gaff perhaps on the outside the slightly more classy.

Duggan is a good one and probably not available to Fremantle but if he is I imagine he will be high up the draft board as someone who interviewed exceptionally well and is highly regarded by clubs.

knightmare, i notice that both you and cal twomey have miller going at pick 31 to the hawks. Have you heard anything regarding this or just a rough estimate of his draft position?

I haven't seen Twomey's draft, just a quirky fluke and Hawthorn were pretty much in going through the picks the first logical club to take Miller given Mitchell is nearing the end and Sewell is retired. I haven't updated my draft in about a week now and in my rolling draft on my PC I actually have Hawthorn going early on Nathan Drummond.

No inside information here.

Hey KM,

Ben Newton has nominated for the draft, which club (and draft selection#) do you see him going to?

Cheers

I'd like to see Newton receive another chance. Of the delisted guys he is the better bet and the guy who has a real chance long term to find a regular position for a team in the right situation. Melbourne, St Kilda, Western Bulldogs. They're some teams that make sense. Richmond with their love for recycled players probably take him if I had to guess his eventual destination.

KM, looking at Touk Miller, he reminds me a lot of a young Daniel Kerr. How would you compare the two as draft prospects?

Kerr was much more explosive, more productive and dominant ball winner. Miller isn't that same star level talent.

Touk Miller if you're looking for a vision to develop - he has that similar size/body to Dion Prestia - just without that same explosion and is not dominant on that same level as a much less productive guy, but he has that similar strong, stocky body for a sub 180cm guy with real strength, ability to keep his feet and really just use his strength to consistently win the ball. He has some ability to go forward, take a mark and win the 1v1 contests and win the ground balls so he's draftable around the mid draft mark.

KM what do you think the chances of the Ballarat Rebels youngster Tom Templeton are to get drafted in the main draft or perhaps even the rookie draft, been quite impressive coming off half back in the TAC cup and lit the MCG up with his B.O.G. performance for St. Pats in the Herald Sun Shield Final???

Draft chance late/rookie without being guaranteed a list position.

Knightmare, I don't know if this has been asked.
But, how does Patrick McCartin compare to Jesse Hogan?
And.. If you were the Dees, would you take McCartin if he slipped to 2/3?

McCartin is more dominant closer to goal, Hogan is more a natural centre half forward. I'd take Hogan first, but both are in the same conversation as similarly dominant key forwards and forwards who shouldn't need the usual four seasons to develop.

I'd take McCartin at 3 for Melbourne if satisfied that diabetes won't effect his development. He is a clear top 3 talent in my mind if his health is ok but it is conditional on that.

Hey Knightmare, Nathan drummond I saw during the champs had a 15 disposals a game at 50% efficiency, do you reckon he could be developed into a elite possession getter.

With Phil Walsh in to coaching, he has a team first attitude e.g. rewarding effort, give to players in better positions etc. Which key defenders around our first and second picks have that team first attitude?

Could we pick up Brayden Maynard with our second pick in the draft? And what is his comparison/style?

Drummond can continue to increase his production gradually and become a handy inside ball winner or running back flanker. To me though he is more a quality over quantity guy and will remain that way. It's mostly due to his natural to look to do damage with his touches rather than get so many cheap touches which is fine. He just does it on his own with his running anyway.

Most key defenders are team first guys, any of Goddard, Marchbank and McDonald strike me as having that nature - but I'm sure the club more extensively in interviewing the players and talking to their coaches in depth will know more than I do.

Maynard may well be available at Adelaide's second round pick and while I haven't updated the op I have him going to Adelaide in the second round. He's a strong contested ball winner, can play anywhere but ideally would play through the midfield if not for limited endurance at this stage. He's something like a Brent Macaffer in that he is a good size and can play a number of different positions and roles without having a clearly defined position.

Bennell went number two overall and has been terrific.

It's just doing the personality profiling and making a judgement based on that. Do your due diligence interviewing and talk to their previous teachers/coaches among those others who have been in contact with the players.

This year Ahern and Pickett both will go first round. Cockatoo and Garlett may also so while there may not have been many indigenous footballers going early draft the last few years, it's a different story each year.

Funny how they are all individual's, just like everyone else, with different skills, physiques and abilities.

Could Nathan Drummond develop into a lock down role on the dangerous small forwards in the AFL?

Very possible with Drummond. He certainly has the pace and is strong enough. I wouldn't say no to that vision. Down back even in a negating role he still needs to clean up his work by foot and decision making but it's within his capabilities.

Where do you have Ryan Lim going?
He trained with us last pre season.

Lim if picked most likely goes as a rookie. Athletic as he is his footskills are not great.

Hey KM, any chance Weller slides to 12? I've heard he might not want to play anywhere but Vic due to family.

Yet you would be a fool to not look at certain trends when using 1st round draft picks

All clubs do their due diligence on players they are looking at drafting. Is the player an introvert or an extrovert, a shy quiet player may find it more difficult making friends in a completely new environment. A country kid with strong family ties may find it difficult in a busy city like Sydney. Are they looking to further their study, do they have other interests, would their girl friend move with them.

It would be very dangerous and silly for clubs to put a line through any collective group of players. Each players needs to be drafted purely as an individual.

Who said anything about putting a line through players?

If a certain race of people had a higher go home rate it would be stupid to completely ignore that when drafting a player. Inb4 "dats racist"

He did score equal 4th in the kicking test at the combine, so the potential is there.

Just because you said inb4 doesn't mean its not. Stop derailing the thread with this rubbish.

Hi Champ im seeing a massive trend in recruiting where best available is not picked...

No way West Coast have been picking Vic kids they have a clear focus and the Bulldogs will this draft do the same..watch for all our pics to be \Cannon or Jets sometimes Dragons or stingrays but look over WA and SA kids thoughts...

You're distinguishing players by race and saying that recruiters should think twice before drafting them. Discriminating by race = racism. Pretty simple.

If you think not completely ignoring the race of a player who might be coming to your club is discrimination then good for you pal.

I'll be waiting in the real world without keyboard warriors desperate to label people racists :$

Yeah, but to not factor-in someone's background would be a negligent approach to recruiting. Background is a factor. Ideally, recruiters want youngsters who are likely to adjust to life in the AFL. This goes for both Aborigines and non. Liam Jurrah was always going to be high risk, so was Daniel Connors. The unfortunate reality is that a higher percentage of Aborigines find it difficult to adjust to the rigid structures of life in the AFL, due to a higher percentage of Aborigines living in marginalised conditions where they are not surrounded by a community made up of those living a highly structured 9-5 existence.

I would say then you have to judge people based on their background and not their race. As you mentioned, people who grow up in small marginalised communities find it more difficult to adjust to the rigours of AFL - recruiters would want to find that out. I would guess a lot of people casting aspersions about indigenous players know nothing about the players other than their race and their footballing ability and are putting 2+2 and making 5.

Hey KM, any chance Weller slides to 12? I've heard he might not want to play anywhere but Vic due to family.

I think there's a couple of things unlikely here. Firstly, Weller is a very slim chance to slide to the Tigers, in fact I've given up on him getting to #11 for my Eagles. You never know, but he just seems too classy to get overlooked, and there are four suitors, in GWS, GC, Geelong and WCE, who will all have him in their top 2 or 3 for those early picks. Secondly, are you confusing Weller with a Victorian player? He's from Tassie and has lived up in Queensland for the past few years. His brother is playing in Melbourne but that seems like less of a draw than the average player has to want to go to a specific state. But I'm just guessing.
