Been tested more times than I can remember. All different times of day and night. Living in Kilmore maybe it something to do with the proximity to the Hume Highway that has them checking more often.......

Not sure whether they can or not, but it happened to me once (well, not home, but to a mates place).

I had a cop car follow me home from a pub after I did a cheeky u-turn and breath test me out the front. I hadnt been drinking though.

I cop two or three a year I'd say. Perth has a lot of choke points around the city exits where they regularly crop up.

The one thing which really intrigues me is the reliability of the technology. Recently I went through after drinking a single bottle of corona and got told I should head straight home because I was very close to the limit. Conversely I've been through several times after 2-3 drinks over several hours and never had anyone say anything.

Would love to hear more from someone who knows how they work, my guess is the machines may be skewed towards higher readings if you have drunk very recently, to the point where it's still on your breath?

The roadside test is nothing more than an indication of the presence of alcohol and can be affected by things like how long ago and what you drank. If you go too high on that you go and blow again in the proper machine which gives an accurate reading, and that's what you are charged on.

Only been done once in the 5 years I've had my license. Pretty surprised with the P plate thing and the car I drive.

They're often out in the morning rather than the night. Reason being, alcohol stays in your system for quite a while. Most people think they're fine the morning after but if they've had a big night, there's a pretty good chance there will still be something in their system.

Live down on the coast where there's very few main roads and very little for the cops to actually do, so I get done every few weeks. Always seems to be a Tuesday or Wednesday morning which seem absolutely pointless to me. But hey I reckon I could get absolutely legless on a Saturday night and drive home along the Great Ocean Road in reverse and the cops would wave at me as I drive on past.

The lame jokes I try and crack each time with them go down like a lead balloon.

Went through one last night but just got waved through thank ****. They had a huge backlog of cars waiting and it didn't seem to be moving very fast (or at all in fact).

A year or two ago, some bright spark at WAPOL decided to set up a breath test on riverside drive heading towards UWA, during peak hour. Result, more than an hour delay for drivers trying to exit perth westbound and a lot of very very grumpy people.
