The last 13 winners of this award have been midfielders but are we about to see a ruckman, a key defender or even a key forward outshine all and be crowned best player in the game by his peers.
Max Gawn would have to be right up there in contention given Martin, Fyfe and Dangerfield haven't been as dominant as previous years and with no clear standout this year the award is almost impossible to predict for the first time in a long time.
Right now I'd have Gawn winning from Rance and Mitchell but it could go either way. Could Hawkins be a chance? Riewoldt even? Both have been pivotal to their teams this year.
