i believe they are in contact and start discussing how they see the player in the team. i dont believe any such thing as a heads of agreement exists though. i think players will make decisions based on meeting the coaching staff then when time is right get down to talking exact figures, and things will proceed or snag accordingly. their options will be left open at all times if their first preference starts heading south in terms of figures and they will move sideways to another negotiation which has been left open.

Don't you get it - RFA and FA players cannot be made offers before October 1.

hate to say it but the power have very much been in contact with Monfries, at least through his management, and whilst I cant clarify the terms of the deal I can say that Angus is definitely be aware of what Port has on the table.

In my opinion Pearce has shown every sign of leaving, along with chaplin and jacobs. Things may change depending on a new coach being able to sell them on the new regime, but as it stands I feel like all 3 will be with other clubs next year. Chappy to tigers, Jacobs to Roos, Pearce to either GWS or Richmond.....

please note that that entire second paragraph is my opinion, not fact

I'm not at all adverse to us talking to Monfries, hes a good player IMO, but talk of a 4 year offer on the table just doesn't sound right.

I guess the thing is that in order to get a restricted free agent, you have to pay "overs" otherwise his own club will match. Its the nature of the beast unfortunately, you need to find a way to make that contract undesirable to the other team to match

Agreed, but 4 years for a mid-age player of Monfries standing is downright irresponsible. Think we can all agree on that.

I find it hard to believe Richmond could outbid other clubs on multiple restricted free agents, so would think Pearce may struggle to get there, but if its them doing the bidding I'd be tempted to try and match it. Again though I don't know what compo would come our way for him ... so how can you make that decision.
If its GWS we would either get a pack after our first rounder (pick 8) or an end of first rounder. Looking at the phantom drafts board it looks like GWS have activated a compo pick (from Adelaide) at pick 22 currently, and Brisbane has a pick at 23. Somehow we would end up in this mix. I think our year this year is worse than either Brisbanes or Adelaides compo pick years so would that put us at pick 22 ?

Chappy has had 2 top 3 finishes in past three seasons, and finished highly again this year. Surely he has to be in the higher category of restricted free agent compos. Maybe another end of first round selection.

Jacobs must be traded for.... North Melbourne wont give up 14 for him, and a pick in the late thirties (their second pick) is too low, so I really don't know how they would work this trade. I would have though mid 20's is the latest he could be for a raw pick - lets say 30 for the sake of an argument.

Would we be happy with losing all 3 and ending up with 3 picks in the 20's for them ?

EDIT: With FA on us, it almost feels like clubs are too busy spending their time throwing offers at players at rival clubs, and neglecting locking up their own players first.

We can all agree on that but it does not change the fact Rhode has made the 4 year offer, but I have no idea what the money is. FA will change the length of contracts, until clubs etc adjust and see how it all plays out.
Monfries has not accepted it yet as Port was not high on his list for clubs to head to. Time will tell. Pearce is not interested in Richmond or GWS.

Yes Port have ignored their own FA but gather they will start to move once the coach is announced; yet they moved on Monfries!!! They must see Monfries as a must get at all costs.

I wasn't suggesting that there has been no contact - it's just the offer of a formal contract with T&Cs would not yet be in place or offered just yet. There are other RFA/FA players to consider and the $ and years would impact on any final offers. All this ($ and years) has to be considered in context with the players that are leaving as well.

pearce has shown interest in the $$$$ and loved chocco as a coach. Hence my 2 guesses

That seems to be the sense. A few times I've heard comments like he wants to stay at Port etc, but doesn't feel wanted. It almost feels like his sense of being wanted is to be in the highest 2 or 3 players on the list.
If a side wants a good quality outside player and is in a position to challenge for a flag over the next 3 seasons I can see them throwing extra money at him, which we could be negligent to match. Ultimately like all forms of work, its generally easier to get more money by going somewhere else. I just hope the extra dollars are enough to cover cost of living, and isolation from family etc.

Chaplin and Pearce are both restricted free agents so at the end of the day the club has the choice to let them go (via FA). We may as well get used to our free agents more often than not holding off signing anything until the FA window.

With these boys leaving....It seems we'll be loaded up with picks for the incoming coach to shape his list in a hurry.

As long as we're compensated fairly.
Not if we bring FAs in to the club.

I think it's clear that there is no rush with the FA trading not starting until October 1 - and of course the need to wait for the new coach announcement. That's why the player speculation is as tenuous as the coach speculation.

Well we all know how Matrix went after he left Mike D's system.....

PS. If only we paid Joe Johnson

PPS. Go Suns

marion ended up sucking balls, but he also won a title a few years later. Not sure who got the last laugh there haha

Not offically they can't, but offers are made to players through their managers so often it's not funny. We would be doing it just as much as the next club too.

The actual signing can't be done till after the October 1, however all the nuts & bolts of any deals are worked out long before that date arrives.

Why is it only ever good players (Nathan Krakouer excepted) who want out? Why do we never hear about how Tom Logan and Matt Thomas want to leave? :(

Monfries is a poor man's Brett Ebert. If we must have a small forward who doesn't crumb on our list I'd rather keep the one we already have.

To be hones't I don't really see any similarity between them.

I think this year more than ever, that the uncertainty of what FA will deliver, on top of normal trading and the new coach factor means that 'unofficial' offers from us won't be that prevalent. That's not to say that rumours will abound - and somehow - beats the living suitcase out of me - miraculously:rolleyes:, most of them are bullshit.
