Why bother drafting Whitlock and then off-loading him? Lord and Finlayson don’t cut it and I’m not particularly keen on another key forward who hasn’t even debuted in three seasons at Carlton.

Why bother drafting Barry Brooks if we get rid of him after 1 season? Because Byron Pickett became available, who in the end was the difference in winning a flag.

Theres no guarantee Whitlock makes it. If you have the chance to get a young elite player whos a known quality with 10 years left then it might be worth trading a young KPF who’s draft position suggests statistically hes unlikely to become a big contributor

Giving up Whitlock is a problem but you have give up something and hopefully getting Nasiah means we don't need peak Wayne Carey to get to goals because Nasiah is such an amazing kick and his delivery will mean a good KPF should be enough.

Are there any tall free agents in the next couple of years?

Whitlock absolutely gets the NWM deal done. Saints will take it.

2 years from now we have an issue though.

Based on what? Not performances.

It’s far too early to say he’s an upgrade on a player who has already shown something at the level In lord, much less a guy who’s had a 44 goal season in the afl as fin has done.

I think it would be more accurate to say you think he could have that upside … maybe.

I’m ok with adding lemmey as a dfa 40th man on the list, and he’s got some natural gifts , but he’s a fair way from being anything yet.
What has Lord shown?

Plus, I said he's better than current version of Finlayson. Not the peak Finlayson.

From he Carlton VFL games I've seen, Lemmey tries which is more than what I can say for Lord and Finlayson

I could live with trading Whitlock , but it should only be if our hand is forced.

If teams can force us to take what they have and no more for contracted players why should we bend over backwards?

If Whitlock was included in a NWM trade, what draft picks would you add to the trade (assuming the only player involved on St Kildas end was NWM)

Two firsts, or one first + Whitlock + one second is about where it will land IMO. Feels like the line where we're still getting a decent deal but we're also giving the Saints enough that they're not going to send an uncontracted player to the draft rather than reject it. You don't give up two first round picks to make a stand.

Mead from my understanding still has a year to go on contract.
Unless we can find another club stupid enough to take him I reckon we’re stuck with him for 2026.
If was Carr, I would just be blunt and say "I can't see you playing much AFL footy in 2026. Find another club and we'll facilitate a trade".

I think the assumption has to be that that spot goes to Lorenz, Jackson or Morales and get 40 games into them and see what sort of player they can be. If Mead is consistently tearing it up for the magpies fine, but unless that happens, there's not much point playing him in the AFL

He’s likely depth next season.

Having one year left isn’t as bad as having two.
All depends on what we get rid of this year and what we bring in.
I never want to see him playing AFL for us again.
We must bring in someone to take his place or, he’ll be back!

The game today just further highlights how exposed Port is without the likes of JHF, Rozee, Esava, Marshall etc. and how reliant and complacent has become with their best players on the park.

Just need to look at the Maggies to understand how reliant we are on our star players. Hopefully we get lucky with a few DFA's to improve our depth.

Any team with 2 of your best 3 players, and 6 of your best 10 is going to struggle (inc. Rioli and Spp).

Some of the depth players suck but never going to win with the injuries we have, other than a miracle.

Very few clubs have the depth to cover the loss of the top players, you can cover fringe types but not the top.
And not 6 first choice players either.

Disappointing to lose. Some of the depth was exposed, but if you take the club captain, 2x key on ballers, first ruck, a key defender, a key forward and 2x small forwards out of Hawthorn, they would struggle as well.

I recall Rookie Me considered Lemmey's competitiveness as an area for improvement. Has he shown that in the VFL at Carlton? (if you've been able to watch him)
Yeah I also had the same opinion in his draft year. Would say he's worked on it a bit and maybe still drifts out of games sometimes but his forward craft is better than Lord. Just from a positioning and timing perspective
