Port Adelaide’s list changes have been public for over a month now, with six delistings to go alongside their three retirements. There has been a strong level of certainty from the club, as well as Zak Butters himself, that the superstar midfielder won’t leave Alberton this season, although rumours of an improbable move in October continue to circulate. Either way, there’ll certainly be a big watch late in October’s trade period if a rival club is desperate to make an earlier move with an offer neither he nor the Power can refuse.

Players who could arrive

Josh Carr’s club has been linked to forgotten Fremantle on-baller Will Brodie — who astonishingly hasn’t played at AFL level since Round 7, 2023 — and he has since officially flagged his desire to be traded to the Power. Out-of-contract Giant Jacob Wehr has also officially indicated his desire to become a Port Adelaide player, after being delisted by his club of five years. The Power have been getting aggressive behind closed doors for a small forward, but more recently, for out-of-contract Sun Brayden Fiorini. Nine’s Braden Ingram revealed the inside bull toured Alberton in grand final week, as he weighs up his future. Don’t be surprised, either, if Port takes a liking to delisted Blue Harry Lemmey, who hails from South Australia and showed serious promise at VFL level this season before being cut by Carlton.

On Lemmey before the draft;

Tony Bamford's assessment of Harry Lemmey

”Make no mistake, there is no question mark on Harry’s application and work rate – it is elite.
”He just wasn’t able to capitalise on his year, this year, based on a really good U17 year (in 2021).
”That can happen, sometimes when you have an exceptional U17 year, the U18 year can be a real challenge.

”Will Gould was similar to that, his U17 year was All-Australian, played in our winning champs team, and Darcy Fogarty was the same.

”When they get to their U18 year there is a lot of expectation and pressure and talk about where these boys might end up, in my opinion, far too prematurely.

”Unfortunately Harry couldn’t get going at the start of the season, he didn’t have Covid but his family had Covid so he missed training due to isolation.

”That stop-start nature of his preseason and early games this year clearly had an impact on his form and his confidence.

”We saw a player in our program who was trying so damn hard to replicate what he was able to do last year but not getting the reward.

”What we do know about Harry Lemmey is he is athletic, he is tall, he runs and can mark it, he can kick the ball a mile.

”His attention to detail and application to being the best player he can be is certainly at the level required.”

I hope Zak Butters stays at the club forever, and the club obviously has backup plans regarding Butters' plans if he decides to leave Port next year. But if a 'too good to be true' offer came through in the next few weeks, I would take it. Surely Zak knows if he wants to stay on or not. A top 5 pick in 2025 and a top 10 pick in 2026, plus a good player, should do it.

The problem is he isn't just a great player he's literally in the top 5.

Would need to be like Serong and Young as an example of what type of players we need to make it work (Which we won't know for years down the track), or a high quality KPP.

If we're speaking of depth, then

Serong/Brayshaw/Will Day, Andrews

It will never happen but I wonder if we could get Will day in any situation.

I’m always a bit nervous just how we will use any future picks we get for Butters.
It could end up a total train reck, I’d be happier if he stayed.

I think everyone wants Butters to satay

Any future picks we get will not be traded into this year. It'll be used for the academies and father sons we have coming up in the next 2 years.

We all want Zak to stay. Put together a huge contract in front of him now. We will be over a barrel (as usual) if we don't get on the front foot.

We already have put a huge contract in front of him.

I don’t see much benefit in trading him this year if he’s definitely going.

Assuming he doesn’t request to go to a bottom club, we’d still get a good deal (in better drafts) matching a free agency bid. And we get another year of butters

Zak isn't a fibber like some others, he has said it will be a footy decision and not a family/go home factor one. And I believe him.
His family has always encouraged him to think this way a footy career is a short period in one's life and Zak believes this. If mid next year he can see Carr's plan bearing fruit he will stay if he has doubts he will consider things but he will juggle that with the love he has for his teamates and the club. Im confident he will resign towards the end of next season.

I agree with this. If we don't completely drop the bundle and end up bottom 4 my feeling is that he'll stay. It might not be long term but he'll stay.

My thermonuclear scenario is we do just that, then f/s & nga rules get tweaked further - I mean beyond the changes about to be announced. Because the AFL always feels the need to fiddle a second or third time whenever they try something new.

None of Moraes, Berry, Whitlock or Cochrane should have second-year blues next year. I hope and expect all four of them to be much better contributors from the start of the new season. Berry needs to model his game on Zak Bailey. Keen to see Cochrane again, as I think he could be a massive bonus as a dangerous, mercurial small forward.
I think Cochrane could be very handy in filling SPP's position.

Seamus Mitchell 23yo small quick defender UFA out of contract. Played 28 AFL games over last 3 years.
well he did win us the game against the Hawks when DBJ kicked the match winner.

i genuinely dont see how we compete for a flag any time soon.
Brisbane will be around the mark for years. they have had the benifits from cheap academy players and cheap father sons. now they are closing that loop hole. we wont get the same benifits.
then theres teams like sydney, who benefit thr same, geelong and collingwood who work outside the salary cap.
the next 5 to 8 years have already been decided. no teams can catch up with the loop holes now closed

When you’re talking about the AFL, I agree it’s very easy to be cynical…

Turn Bergs into Zac Bailey?
So on June 5 at post #1,693 in this thread, C4 starts the Bailey to Port theory. Almost 4 months, I doubt that theory is still alive - for 2025 trade period at least.

After the GF I said I have to find out where the Bailey to Port talk started.

Will be interesting if he is a RFA in 2026. Will Brisbane match any offer put to him? If he is an RFA, we wont have the draft capital to price him out if we are going after Dougie and Zak stays.

If he isn't an RFA, Brisbane will be somewhat happy to get a first round pick for him which probably is between pick 15 and 20 before player bids.
