Breust speaks for himself. Would have all sorts of knowledge of forward craft.

Duryea is an interesting one. Has played a fair bit of VFL, and 100+ AFL games for 2 clubs, so should have a great depth of knowledge and also be able to relate to the struggles of the players who are not fully established in the AFL team.

Jacky Magden is a real left field selection for VFL coach. They must be impressed with what he brings to the table coaching wise because he doesn't have any huge credentials stemming from his playing days. It will be really interesting to see how he adapts to coaching his own team.

Where did you see the VFL coach announcement?

Particularly like how the RFC article mentions supporting our young players to give them every chance of succeeding at AFL level... love it!!

Very happy with both these guys considering all the youngsters we already have and the ones we will draft this year.

Luke Breust might be too naturally good and silky to know how to teach those who aren’t. Prefer a dirty, nuggety, struggling former player.

Yes lets not get coaches who are 'too good'.

I was thinking similar.... Morris & Batchelor certainly went alright... But I'll back the club & Adem has experience with these guys in his time at the Hawks...

It’s great to see the club bringing in some more that Yze has worked with.

Like many, I think these are great appointments.

It’s a credit to the club that we can attract quality people into our organisation. If the media reports are any guide, Breust was wanted by a number of clubs and was highly regarded by the Hawks, as both a player and mentor.

It also means Newman has some support coaching the forwards. I’m really struggling to understand the criticism of Newman.

What is he supposed to do. We have one of the most inexperienced forward lines in the AFL. It’s lead by Lynch, who is 31 and had just comeback after 2 injury ravaged years. We have a couple of forwards in Faull and Armstrong who are in their first year, so expectations need to be measured. Seth Campbell had his best year and was rewarded with a 4 year contract, which I imagine was signed off by Blair.

Mansel had a solid year, maybe not his best, but didn’t disgrace himself. MRJ was serviceable, it can be argued that he is better served as a midfielder than a forward, but his physical limitations prevents him playing in the midfield.

Steely Green has his moments, however, lacks the poise and skill to be an elite small forward.

The delivery into the forward line is pretty diabolical at times. How often do we see Taranto and others just throw the ball on the boot and hope for the best. Alternatively, we see a long kick down the line to a contest.

As you've mentioned forward line is very inexperienced & "diabolical at times" and I agree.
The flashes I've seen from Steely have been really very good. 25 games and turning 22 next January. I've seen him as more of a slow burn with steady improvement each season.
Seemed to grow in confidence at VFL level showed some growth at senior level. Seems to have the physical attributes, as with many players in the AFL success is often about self belief. I really hope he continues to back himself & realises he does belong at the level...

Totally agree! It's interesting to me that we only went after Troy Chaplin from Melbourne? Then we bring in 2 from Yze's time at the Hawks. Maybe I'm reading too much into it?

Without knowing who else we interviewed or enquired about, it’s pretty slim pickings at the moment for out of contract assistant coaches. Blues are the only team that really made any changes in their box with King at Dees and Carr at Port going into next year with similar set ups
