Traded Luke Jackson [Traded with #44 and #67 to Fremantle for #13, F1 and F2]

You've got to let the young talls have some time to show their ability too.

West Coast is going to be heavily into the market for Logan McDonald and Luke Jackson.

I'm sure they will but 2022 is probably a year or two too early for them to have the currency for Jackson (Or McDonald).

Expect Jackson probably signs a two year deal. Aside from Boyd who was the last high draft pick to leave a vic club after their initial contract expired?

Technically his initial 2 year contract ended Last year but he added a year to it so it ends this year

There might be a few Eagles a bt pissed if that's the case.

"West Coast players have reportedly agreed to a significant pay cut to help avoid any future coronavirus-related salary cap issues after being assured the club isn’t planning a major play for a high-profile recruit.

The West Australian reported senior players sought assurances the club wouldn’t use the leftover cash to chase a big-name."

To be fair since then sheppard has retired and kennedy and hurn are probably finishing in 12 months..nicnat and shuey will be near the end and on less money and if darling doesnt get vaxxed and retires that all frees up a fair bit of cap.

Yes, the Darling money is significant.

Still think that for what Eagles/Freo would have to pay neither side should do it.

Eagles would be better off taking 2 (or 3) kids at the draft, and Freo have Darcy.

Move would make very little sense for Freo. Darcy is a gun and whilst Max benefits enormously from Jackson in the team that’s a guy who is 30 years old and enjoying someone else shouldering the load. Gawns career probably lasts for two extra years if Jackson remains with us.

lol Jackson is going nowhere. There has been no indication that he's ever wanted to leave. none. He loves the club. he'll sign for a couple of years and then sign a big one for the dees.

You can back end contracts anyway to squeeze everyone in.

Why did he only sign an one year extension?

Most rookies sign a two year extension and this may not go well for you.

Agreed for the most part.

Back ending contracts is a pretty simple analysis on how it can work, there is only so much you can push your issues into the future. And given the way the World has been lately, money now > money later so how much are players going to want to be back ending their contracts?

The more likely scenario for players is to front load to get them the money and security in the bank.

There's a new agreement to be put together between the AFL and AFLPA which could see the cap raise at the end of the season for future years - so I'd expect some contracts to be held up a bit longer if player managers want to make sure they extract maximum value and some clubs to want to be sure what is happening next year before committing.

A little hard to back end a big deal when the club has already put in a lot of money in (back-ended) for Petracca and Oliver.

Melbourne will likely pony up a deal for a couple of years and Jackson will sign for unders while the Dees are in their flag window but I’m not sure how confident I’d be signing him after that.

It won’t just be WA-based clubs throwing big deals at him either.

There has been no indication he doesn't love being at the dees. If he was born in melbourne literally no-one would be talking about it. This reminds me of everyone on Bigfooty saying that Jared Rivers would go back to SA after he won the rising star award. What happened next? He played for us for 10 years before playing 3 seasons at Geelong. People couldn't have been more incorrect. lol

When is there ever a direct indication from the player they are likely to leave? Unless you’re Luke Jackson yourself you have no idea of his intentions in the coming years.

We can only look at the possibilities and circumstances surrounding the club and Jackson.

The ultimate aim for a player is to win a flag, which Jackson has already done. Now Melbourne have entered their window he likely sticks around a couple of seasons to try to jag another, but clubs will also offer big money at the end of this year.

Unless he wants to stay on unders in his prime there’s a good chance he decides to bail in a few years to sit on a big contract elsewhere.

you say 'good chance'. I say a very small chance. He is only young. So your logic is that because he's won a flag at 19, then he won't care about being at a poor club from 21-32 years old? C'mon mate. If you've ever played competitive sport you'd know that team success is huge. Same reason why dusty didn't go to kangaroos.

Makes little sense till you watch Lory Robb doing his best to pretend to be a ruckman each week

Why not have 100% a grade Ruck work all game long and I’m sure Darcy / Jackson could snag 50 goals between them resting fwd

We’d be dumb not to think outside the box IMO if we were any sort of a chance

You’re suggesting West Coast or Fremantle are going to be ‘poor clubs’ for 11 years?! Melbourne didn’t even get belted by 186 points 11 years ago. Even poor clubs, which Melbourne were - to the extreme - improve at some point.

Jackson would be the perfect player to add from a West Coast POV. Immediate performance plus room to grow with a young squad.

Team success is incredibly important, which is why Jackson is in a privileged position having already won a premiership in his second season. He now has more options available to him - safe in the knowledge he’ll always be remembered as a premiership hero.

You realise Martin signed his 7-year deal before he had become a premiership player?

I reckon Jackson will sign for a couple more years - he’d be silly not to while the Dees are in their window - but he will also receive some big offers to bail.

Jackson is also a very capable key forward and has the athleticism and read to play most positions on the ground. He could possibly even play as a tall midfielder.

Freo should definitely have a crack, and IMO given their young list profile and available cap space they probably will.

Jackson isn't a capable forward. He is a ruckman/midfielder, not a fwd. If melbourne lost Jackson, I'd want 3 first rounders with one of those being a top 3 pick and nothing else.

Unfortunately for the Dees he won’t be a free agent and that usually results in the club having to accept unders for the uncontracted player.

It might be something like Pick 10 and Jack Petruccelle or Jackson Nelsen for Jackson.

Or the Dees could package Jackson up with Rivers and grab a future second in addition to Pick 10.

There’s unders though and then there’s pick 10 plus extras for Jackson. Cerra got pick 6 and Jackson is worth a decent amount more

That was because Carlton had Pick 6.

If West Coast had Pick 10 and Jackson nominated them specifically they’d be under no obligation to give up any more than the pick and a fringe player.

I don’t think Jackson is worth ‘a decent amount more’ than Cerra, who is a very good young player himself.
