The Swastika is actually an ancient symbol used predominantly through the Slavic regions of Europe (I think). The Nazis stole it for their own purposes.

I think its a symbol for protection, used on houses etc. To ward off evil spirits. So its actually a good example of how important context is with this kind of thing. The same symbol, item etc. Can have different meanings in different places.

Which tool thinks they have the definitive moral compass to come out and repress this expression? Some boofhead in a football dept? Someone writing a sports column? Give me a break.

Here's the thing, they're expression has been criticised, not repressed. Massive difference

Negative nancy...

So if you want to play the "employment angle"

They are entitled to 8 weeks leave. That leave usually starts the day or days following their last game.

It is why the 10 non-finallists start pre-season earlier than finallists.
Do get the feeling that if a random group of mates decided to all have a day off work, dress up in outlandish costumes and get on the piss, they'd be labelled w*nkers, idiots and louts. I understand why they do it, and don't have a problem with it, but we do hold footy players to a bit of a double standard with this kind of thing, glorifying when we'd usually be deriding.
The double standard isthat basically every company has an end of year or xmas staff party where employees act much worse than the footballers but we/they are not held up to public judgement. This thread is a classic example, for the posters that are outraged by the poor costumes, I take it you've never laughed at racial jokes or skits on tv/movies?

I have no problem with over the top humour between mates (to a degree). I'd sympathise with them if they were found doing this skit in privacy, but the photo was put up for the world to see so obviously it's asking for backlash. Unfortunately AFL players and regular staff employees are held to different standards. A player like Wellingham cost his club the TAC sponsor just because of the public nature of the industry, something your typical employee isn't burdened with. In no way am I saying what the Melbourne lads did is anywhere near as serious, but it's the same principle

Can't say I've ever dressed as a pedophile to the office xmas party.

We had two girls dress in nurse uniforms and they introduced themselves as "Naughty Nurses."

Naturally, I shut the party down immediately.

Firstly, only ignorant people call it "naughty." The correct expression is "differently behaved."

Secondly, no one chooses to be naughty, its just the way they are. Naughtiness causes a lot of sadness and grief for a lot of families. It is not a thing of fun.

Naughtiness strikes a terrible toll on people who suffer with the affliction. Sitting in the corner, getting grounded.... all that sort of turmoil. How do you think naughty people feel when you make flippant references to their affliction?

I referred the two girls for naughtiness sensitivity training, where representatives from the naughty community donate their time to come and explain their experiences and hardships.

I don't know why they thought it was ok to dress up as naughty nurses. you wouldn't come to a party and say, "Hey, we are crippled Nurses...." so why is it ok to make fun of naughty people?

(Actually, maybe you could do the crippled one... I will have to remember that for next year)

Poor analogy. The correct analogy would be one dressed as Osama Bin Laden and the other as a victim of 9/11 at a mad monday. How would you feel about them doing that?

Wouldnt care.

YOU ARE DRESSING UP AS SOMETHING OR SOMEONE.

That doesnt mean you dont respect hte victims, that doesnt mean you encourage the act.

Its a fact that these events happened. There's no point in hiding it away.

Thats like saying nobody should make jokes about the holocaust, or michael jackson, or anything that could have possible 'victims'.
Hell dont make a joke about hacking nude pictures of celebrities....thats sexual assault too remember?

Stupid world this is becoming.

The same reason painting your face black to immitate say Lebron James is not racist. All you are doing is trying to look like someone else. If they were really pale and you painted your skin white nobody would give a stuff.

I'm normally the last person to join the "offended on behalf of others", brigade. In fact, it drives me mental.

But if you can't see anything wrong with a bloke dressed up as a recently convicted paedophile, accompanied by another bloke dressed as a young girl, you need help.

Tell a victim of paedophilia it's all just a laugh and "tongue in cheek".

That's me.

I thought it was reasonably funny.

So could we go as a packet of cigarettes?
Considering many people lose loved ones to cancer caused by them, would they be offended if we did that?

What about dressing up as michael jackson and a little boy?

What about dressing up as Ben Cousins with a bag of flour...would people taht have lost loved ones to drug addiction have a right to be upset.

You see where this is going right?

:drunk:

These are all a little (and by little, I mean a lot) different to dressing up as a pedophile and a victim, one that has come to light only very recently.

I mean, sure you don't have to think that it's poor taste etc, humour is subjective and the line is different for everyone, but **** me talk about a horrible argument.

It says something to me that the arguments against these players being stupid morons is basically different versions of these posts

I guess the hyperbole is to articulate the point that dressing in the costume does not imply an endorsement of the related crime or a even a careless attitude toward it.

Keeping working through!

Exactly.
Dressing in a topical theme does not mean you are endorsing anything.

I mean is it insensitive to have a party where everyone dresses up as soldiers?

"Being offended provides no objective indication of "right" & "wrong". It's nothing more than a barometer of your own emotional control" - Ricky Gervais

This is where its getting lost.
Be offended, but unless a reasonable person would join you in being offended then keep it to yourself and move on.
