Whatever the reason the saints are struggling to get this bloke to put pen to paper

GWS may be the location many consider but if he's available should we make a play.

At his best, which is quite often in fact, he is a true match winner and carries plenty of lesser players at St Kilda. He can play inside winning hard ball, run like an outsider and has excellent disposal as well as a brilliant mark.

This side has regenerated superbly and a proven true attacking CHB who can be a target to mark through an opponents forward press or run his way through it and hit forward targets would be a superb addition for any team attacking a flag and his availability is opening up.

While GWS are favorites In the excellent tradition of Swans stealing the Saints great hopes, should we try and gazump GWS land this man.

Absolutely! :thumbsu:

A few of our young brigade are at best a couple of years from their peak. With another experienced and quality player in our ranks, would certainly help us to move further up the ladder in the short term.

How awesome would it be if we got Ben Reid and Brendon Goddard in one trade week next year :D.

If we got Goddard would he play back, midfield of forward?

Do we even have room in the salary cap or the players to trade to make a play for him? I don't want to give up a promising young player for him, that's for sure, I'm pretty sure, that's what the Saints will be after. :(

Depending on what Reid is on, I'd suspect we have a bit of room to play with.

You'd think we will have a bit too play with at the moment considering some of the big name retirements we have had over the last few years. Bolton will probably retire at the end of this year and he'd probably be on a solid wage. Depends if some of the younger guys are on front loaded contracts as well.

How many young kids would be on front loaded contracts? Isn't Tom Mitchell on a large contract already? :o Sam Reid would probably be another, who else?

Having said that though, I wouldn't be too upset if we chase and got Goddard, if we don't have to give up too much talent.

He's out of contract end of this year isn't he? So we wouldn't have to give up anything if he wanted to come...

No.

At his best he's a star, but would we get that or the guy who couldn't cope with the expectations last year and finished 9th in St Kilda's B&F (after playing all 23 games).

He had a couple of very good years in 2009 & 2010, and going into 2011 he was rated by some as potentially the best player in the game, but failed to deliver. He has never won a B&F at St Kilda.

He's a free agent at the end of 2012 so if he wanted to join us he could.

But firstly do we want to spend big dollars on a free agent or do we want to ensure the retention of our existing players?
Secondly if we do go after a player in free agency, does Goddard meet our greatest needs?

You'd be paying the dollars for a Goddard 2009/10 version, but I'd be concerned we'd end up with the 2011 version.

Pass IMO.

I agree Goddard started slowly in 2011 but he improved on the run home. Nor was his early season form that bad, he was playing above most players in the league but because his output was down on his own permanence many got stuck in. The fact he found a way through it was enough to remind us what an incredible player he is.

Cant give a stuff where he finished in BF's as they throw out some stupid results sometimes, ours included.

His incredible finals performances in the 2010 almost made it impossible for people to rate his next year as good. He was just that good in the Saints' finals run. He wasn't that bad in 2011, not as good as he can be by any stretch of course but better than most of the media kept on saying.

He ended up being underrated overall in 2011. Average start, then moved back to his HB role and was his usual self. Not the dominant 2010 midfield version but had plenty of games in the second half of the season where he looked like the player who won AA off HB.

hell yes. id love to see goddard in Red & White! but i dont think it will happen. a customer of mine has just done work on his house putting in a new deck in the back yard. according to him Goddard has just renovated his whole house. imo you wouldnt spent that kind of money to just pick up and leave. but who knows

On talent both displayed and potential yes go after him. But not to the point that it will hamstring us financially.

He does get a bit sooky lala/petulant at times. We all know how they turn out at our club.

IF he does leave St Kilda... It will be either to another Victorian club... or whatever club can offer him the most money...

If we get him for the right price... I wouldn't think twice about signing him...

Unfortunately... in order to get him we would have to be offering him upwards of a million a year... and even then I am confident GWS would offer him more...

If Goddard were to be snapped up by us I think that would put us in a prime position for a 2013 premiership. The icing on the cake, that is if the Swans keep on improving to meet their internal goals this year.

But lettuce be cereal I hope this does not come to fruition unless its a immensely front loaded contract.

Damn, imagine a team with Goodes and Goddard, with young guns like Rohan, Reid and Hannebery hitting their straps.

He turns 27 in 2012, should be at his best for another 4-5 years at least.

Why are we even talking about this as he would cost a arm and a leg to get. We would have to give St Kilda a lot more than i would want the club paying.

End of contract means anyone can bid for him.
