Freo and Port Had similar Concessions like GWS and GC did. Both freo and Port had 9 picks in the 1st 15 on their 1st years. Only difference was Port used their concessions well compared to freo.

We had 4 picks in the first 15 (picks 6, 7, 8, and 9).

Technically we had an additional 5, but we never had access to those picks, we had to trade them to clubs or lose them, so in reality we really never had these.

West coast didnt have 9 picks in the Top 15 in the 1986 draft. West coast came in with a reserves WAFL side. Of the 21 players that player in the 1985-6 WA team, 4 managed to play for West Coast.

  • 1988 Pre-Draft Zone Selection: Stevan Jackson
  • 1988 Pre-Draft Zone Selection: Don Pyke
  • 1988 Pre-Draft Zone Selection: Peter Sumich
  • 1988 Pre-Draft Zone Selection: Craig Turley
  • 1988 Pre-Draft Zone Selection: Scott Watters
  • 1989 Pre-Draft Zone Selection: Peter Mann
  • 1989 Pre-Draft Zone Selection: Ryan Turnbull
  • 1989 Pre-Draft Zone Selection: Dean Kemp
  • 1990 Zone Selection: Glen Jakovich
  • 1990 Zone Selection: Mitchell White
  • 1991 Zone Selection: Jason Ball

Probably would've foregone Ian Downsborough, John Rombotis and Mark Harwood if it meant having 4 extra years of being able to grab the likes of Brad Ottens, Chad Cornes, Alan Didak, Matthew Pavlich, Corey Enright and Shaun Burgoyne before calling a solitary registration number.

Back on the topic. Malthouse is a Sniping prick. He did take pot shots to freo at the start of the season.

I suspect this for another thread, however I would also say that although the Eagles did not receive generous early concessions, the AFL certainly made up for that a few years later. Port had no such luxury.

West Coasts concessions were ridiculously good. Moratorium on WA players for a number of years, even after that clubs were only allowed to pick 1 WA player per draft. WC were able to cherry pick 5 of the best juniors as pre draft selections and had pre draft zone selections for about 5 years.

As tribey has said already, imagine Port being able to add Brad Ottens & Chad Cornes for nothing before the draft in 97. Add Nic Fosdike, Ryan Fitzgerald, Brett Burton, Ken Mcgregor, Matt Pavlich in 1998. Aaron Fiora and Corey Enright the next year. Didak, Burgoyne or Scott Thompson the year after.

Would have been unbeatable.

i thought mick was smarter than this, im sure that he is. big ratings grabber though mick malthouse, especially talking about why a club is going so crap. who in melb would disagree with him when hes talking ON THE RADIO?!

The amount of criticism that is deemed acceptable towards our club in the media is shocking. If such comments were directed at Collingwood from someone formerly (or currently) associated with another club, they wouldn't be allowed. Football is all about rivalry and competition, but Malthouse's comments were nothing more than slander in an outright disrespectful manner.

The worst part, is that we cop this criticism, despite having one of the longest histories of any club.

I hate everything to do with Port Adelaide; the area, the football clubs (SANFL and AFL), the name, their mascots, their intellectually impaired supporters, their players, their coaches and their history. But part of me just couldn't hate tham as much if they weren't named Port Adelaide and were rebranded SA Power or something equally as pathetic. The idea to rebrand them is stupid. As a Crows supporter we need someone to hate. We want rivilary! It is Port Adelaide that I was born to hate!

You hate Port Adelaide and yet support Palmerston. You must be so conflicted.

Hey dudes, seeing all the love for Mickey here, here is another one that might make you love him even more...he has backed Terry Wallace to be Ports next coach...good luck. ;)

Hmm thats very interesting. Very suprised they got pre draft picks. Keep in mind eagles had 35 player in their 1987 squad while the victorian teams had 52. I know freo traded a fair bit for Watters and Mann. Funny how Neesham filled half the Original squad with Claremont players that won the 1991 and 1993 wafl flags. Seemed like a good idea having a few ex claremont players playing for Freo Aged around 20-24 with 30-50 games under the belt at the time.... I will leave that for another time.

Back on the topic.... Would someone of a Leigh Matthews be interested in taking the Port Job? I wouldnt mind seeing hime come out of retirement. It might motivate Malthouse to coach Carlton.

Heard him on radio say that he will defenitely not coach again...

Malthouse will coach again IMO, just not outside victoria, his ego is too big not to...
