Mate, cmon... Johnson?

Obree is... but Johnson?

Johnson was considered important enough to keep at the club when Tarrant was traded, despite Johnson being the one who was charged after the infamous incident at a Port Melbourne hotel. Obviously the 'powers that be' at Collingwood rate him highly.

Does that explain him playing the year out in the VFL.

It doesn't take a smart person to remember that Johnson was a quality player back in the 2005/2006 seasons. He broke the lines and his field kicking was brilliant.

Over the whole season (ever since the Daniel Bell hit, actually) he has been nothing but a liability and a horrible player.

You obviously haven't been watching the game that long if you don't know the difference in Ben Johnson years ago and Ben Johnson now.

If i wanted someone to kick a few show boat goals in junk time while my team was 10 goals up..........i would pick Thomas :D

Murphy easily :thumbsu:

If I wanted someone to shank every kick and help the other team win, I'd pick Murphy*.

*It works both ways when you exaggerate and make up shit. Thomas has won several games for us, and has kept us in plenty. He has kicked junk-time goals, but so what? Someone has to kick the goals at the end, and when a player is conserved for the second half to be effective in bursts (due to their small frame and not fully developed tank), they will generally have fantastic second halves. Just watch the semi final of 2007.

what are you talking about? he was 5th in the comp for assists. where was thomas??

I think you missed the point of the post... he was highlighting that anyone can make things up like saying 'Thomas is a junktime specialist' and 'Murphy can't kick' without anything to back it up.

yes but the only difference is thomas is actually a junktime specialist.:p

nah i'm just kidding. i realise thomas is very inconsistent but i've seen him play well during every time period of a game at some stage. i think because he is inconsistent he may bob up whn the game's over and kick a few and take a hanger and this will cause people to label him a junk-time specialist but in other games when he plays well early in the piece and fades away the same people will just ignore it.

as for murphy, surely he is the most underrated player on bigfooty. every single poster on here reckons he can't kick to save his life but i can honestly tell you he is as good as anyone at carlton at passing to a forward on the lead. i know he can unleash an absolute shocker every now and then but that doesn't mean he always kicks bad, and when you get the ball 25 times a game you're bound to fluff some kicks. i think he just needs to stop trying to drill every kick and look to weight his kicks like judd does and that should sort it. he came 2nd in our bnf this year (in fron of fev and behind only judd), surely he must be doing something to warrant some credit.

Good post, I think Thomas and Murphy get bagged a lot because
1. They are high draft picks and 2. They play for Collingwood and Carlton. People should realise they are still only really kids, third year players are not going to be perfect in every way. Thomas is inconsistent, but he has played well many times when the pressure is well and truly on in tight games, and while I've seen Murphy turn it over a few times, I've seen him hit forwards on the lead plenty of times.

Murphy's clearly the better player at the moment, but I think both teams can be fairly confident we've got two future stars.

not a word of a lie in there, i guess us blues and pies supporters should be used to it, the minnows will never change!;)

murphy is EASILY way better than thomas
thomas tough as nails i doubt that
best moment at the footy bulldogs vs collingwood this year thomas running into open goal doesnt try and kick it tries to do a bork and gets tackled holding the ball bulldogs go up the other end kick a goal win them the game.
thomas is just flashy to inconsistent
murphy came 2nd in carlton b&f infront of fevola and behind judd

If you want to talk soft, talk to me about Cooney. Thomas is as tough as nails. End of story.

Marc Murphy >>>>>>>>>> Mark McGough >>>>>>>>>> Dale Thomas

Call me one eyed, but if it was up to me there is no hope in hell I would take a straight swap between the two. Thomas will be something special, he's showed signs of brilliance already, 2009-10 will be his breakout years.

Pointless thread though, should be done in abour 4-6 years when each are at thei respective primes.

Although it was funny to see how many Carlton supporters began to bag Thomas within minutes, insecure much??:p

Yes you are one eyed, but also and idiot if you would not swap DT for Murph.

One has far more upside. So it's a fair comment, and I agree with it.

In a few years we might still be saying the same thing, but we might be bumping this thread and laughing at the likes of you. That's the beauty of someone with so much talent who is yet to develop the size and tank for a midfield role. They only get better and better.

Upside. That is just as immeasurable as X-factor. Of course just about any player who hasn't performed to great heights has lots of upside. Upside refers to hope rather than reality. I prefer the player who consistently demonstrates his wares, rather than one who has great promise.

It's classic example of greater risk = greater return.

In 2004, imagine if you suggested that Gary Ablett Jr would be outperforming Judd at some stage. People would've laughed in your face.

It's funny, I was bored one day so I searched Gary Ablett on the main bored, and saw many threads calling Ablett Jr soft, most over rated player in the AFL, inconsistent, overhyped.

Sounds familiar to me....

It's not hard to see what players have a lot of upside. It's when a player has talent by the bucket-load - and with work and experience, they will become far better players. Other players are just genuine footballers who fulfill their talent earlier. Some are ready-made footballers, some need to be developed physically, and just with time.

Yes but in the case of Thomas, he has shown he has the ability to be a top player, consistency is the issue. He needs to build his fitness and bulk up a little, and he should be able to convert his brilliant quarter/half games into full games.

You're the one that is gonna be laughed at when Dale Thomas is 25 and yet to deliver on his promise.
