huge opportunity for Cox to get a decent contract if he can perform in the next 2 weeks.

Waldron said on sen the dogs are looking at Tippett. Whilst I think Tippett is better he costs too much and misses too much footy. Cox at half the money is a much better bet.
If I was Simon Dalrymple I'd be watching the next two Collingwood games with a lot of interest. They already missed the boat with Witts last year, and I reckon Cox has the potential to be a superior version who can kick goals.

He would be a perfect fit for the dogs while English develops and grows in to his body.

I'd swap Cox for Lucas Webb or Redpath.

If we couldn't get a second for him I'd be fighting to keep him. In a reportedly shallow draft pick 30ish isn't unreasonable imo. It would still end up being a bargain for them, much like Witts and Nankervis were last year.

It's almost impossible to keep two viable No.1 ruck options on your list now unless one is prepared to play second fiddle.

The flip side of course is a need to have adequate backup should injury or poor form strike.

It's not an easy balancing act.

Obviously Witts wanted out for greater opportunity but Cox with his unique path road to AFL is more an unknown and it's hard to judge what he might do when his contract is up.

It'll be a difficult decision for him as Grundy will be hard to dislodge from the 22 and I'm not convinced a giant of 211cm will ever become suited to a permanent role as a forward however can we really afford to trade him either if he seeks it and leave ourselves vulnerable in that area of the ground?

if we are carrying 3 rucks on the list, no1 is the best, no2 is a vet, no3 is developing kid. could also rookie another one.

there are plenty of rucks in the 2s atm who can fill in. the issue is if your no1 gets a year ending injury.

46. Mason Cox

Statistics: 10 kicks, 10 marks, 13 handballs, 23 disposals, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 tackle, 27 hit outs, 2 goals

miles away?

And the week before:

Statistics: 8 kicks, 4 marks, 7 handballs, 15 disposals, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 4 tackle, 30 hit outs, 2 goals

Miles away?

If we had him & both Reids one would be fit all the time

Besides the fact that Sam's already re signed with the swannies, you know what If WE had them all they'd probably ALL be out injured together. Its how they roll;)....No to Redpath for me.

Actually, I think you're right. I'd prefer to keep Mason for another 12 mths & see what gives. There's still plenty of upside whereas Redpath is probably as good as he's ever gonna be

Yeah, Redpath is an interesting one. You'd happily keep him if you'd drafted him as he offers good depth if nothing else, he's not someone you'd target with an expectation of further improvement, yet he's too young to target as a "break glass in case of emergency" type. Not for me.

But I've probably made similar observations about Q Lynch, Young, Russell, Armstrong et al and we all know how that worked out.

Why put so much effort into him then get rid of him when he comes good.....thought there was an article earlier in year he was about to sign a contract?? Bit worrying nothing has come of it

I have my doubts about him running out a half as first ruck at AFL level, let alone a full game.

Needs to play this week, but if his game time isn't managed properly it'll get ugly.

Well who would you play in the ruck if he wasn't on our list today?
It would be Moore or white, then lynch, god help us if that was the case

Its gonna get ugly anyway. Ports copped a huge dump from all sides since the Showdown....they'll be proving a point this week. I just want to see us play as well as we can for as long as we can.

Cox only has to provide a contest. Moore mite do the around the ground work, though l hope not. It won't be that bad

I'm really looking forward to seeing Cox get a crack at the ruck! Reckon he'll go alright!

It is realistically his best option of making it given his attributes.

IF they really want to find a star FF type then they need to look at the talls in the 194-198cm range as they are far more athletic all round (not just straight line and max height).
They jump higher, have quicker 20m times, have better agility (this is important for when the ball is not marked to regather or chase) etc.

I actually think the AFL has been far to restricted in their search for only ruck sized players, imo they have to learn the game as much as any position and also be specialised at what they do.

A lot of Americas population under 198cm (specifically African American) that athletically blow Aussies out of the water, given 2 years in our system they are just as likely to make it as their 200cm+ taller counter parts if not more likely given the superior athletic ability.
