Same. Dunno if it's the lack of shepard that gets people... but it certainly felt like a Mass Effect to me

But that would be silly I reckon... Sheppard was who you made him to be. Who can you miss a character you create?

This worth a $50? Target has dropped the price to $55 for the consoles so I'm tempted to grab it.

I picked it up today for that price because I saw your post. It is only going to sit on my pile of shame for a while and that's probably the price it will still be by the time I get around to it.

Haven't bought anything besides socks and jocks from Target in a long time and was pleasantly surprised at their gaming stock levels. Didn't have a massive range but had heaps of copies of the big titles and had plenty of hardware in the glass under the counter (controllers, licensed headsets, PSVR, XB1, Switch and Pro consoles).

Finished it last night. To quickly summarise:

The good

- overarching story is fantastic
- characters are generally quite interesting and well developed (better than ME1 and 3, perhaps on par with 2)
- some absolutely hilarious dialogue options, particularly the 'casual' options
- combat is tight and intuitive
- an absolute wealth of things to do
- some very difficult story choices to make
- overall great art direction
- graphically quite strong (with a few exceptions), the planet surfaces in particular are visually incredible

The not so good

- story pacing and execution are a bit off (a very quiet first 5 hours)
- facial animations vary from passable to hilariously bad
- a lot of pop-in graphics issues
- almost too much to do, feels like a bit of a tiring shopping list at points
- soundtrack is a bit quiet and underplayed
- ocassional glitches (had a few quests glitch preventing completion, had a couple of game crashes to the Xbox dashboard)

Overall 8/10

Essentially half price from launch.

Why not? It's not great, but it's not the worst game ever made either like some are claiming.

Yeah I've started it and a few hours in I'm really enjoying it.

I love space operas though.

You're also lucky in that two big patches have already come out.

Finally got it and have been able to sink a good amount of hours into over the past couple of weeks. I'm really enjoying it although having so many side missions is getting tedious. The only thing about the game I'm not really enamored by is the combat. I find the hover is crap for my play style and only good for dodging Fiends. The cover system really pisses me off too.

I started this last week too after getting it cheap recently but don't mind all the side missions, feels like it is finally back to being an RPG. Combat is slick but getting boring because I just keep using the same combos over and over. I'm just finding the entire experience bland though. Sure there are the original races but in the trilogy you got to be involved with the politics of each of them and the game was richer because of it. This just feels sterile, they could have just as easily thought up some new alien species, slapped a different title on it and release it as an entirely new universe and it may have faired better without having to live up to the Mass Effect expectations.

To top this off with just minor bugs and annoyances like enemies getting stuck under terrain and the same dialogue always triggering at certain locations even after the associated quest has been completed, it was fantastic to read this morning that the next patch BioWare are addressing the important stuff like improved character creation and.... increased male romance options for male Ryder. Really BioWare? You play as the pathfinder of the human ark and you only get one human female romance option for hetero male Ryder, so BioWare go and do exactly the sort of thing they have been getting beaten pillar to post about to begin with.

My biggest beef with the writing is a more subjective one though and I think it's the same way I felt going from Stargate SG-1 to Atlantis. SG-1 was based on military figures, much like ME 1-3, where as Atlantis was more about civilians and just like Andromeda I felt like this meant that the writers thought they could crowbar in cringe and quirky behaviours that they think the audience might relate to. I'm sure there are those who don't mind but for me it just makes me think that the characters are douche bags and largely unbelievable. It's something hard to put into words so hopefully that makes some sort of sense.

Besides all of that though this game isn't terrible, it's nearly there. It's worthwhile enough to play but it's just unfortunate that it's going to be a largely forgettable game in what is a fantastic franchise.

I love mass effect but just couldn't finish it. The planet exploration and side quests just ground me into the dust

Yous do know side quests are optional?

Yes but I like to do as much as possible before reaching the point of no return. Otherwise the game doesn't feel complete to me.

Getting stuck into it finally.

What I found best was if the quest ended up in 'aditional tasks' ill just leave till I can be bothered or after the main game. The rest of the categorys seem pretty manageable.

Just about finished on Kadara just waiting for the eventual callback so I can finish a mission and place a settlement. Alot of the loyalty quests have re-opened now so ill probably get back into those next.

Still get a ton of frame rate issues though which is dissapointing.

The point of no return is pretty flexible in this, 99% of non campaign missions are still available after.

Some of the additional tasks have lead to interesting bits of story though I have found. They are a cheap way to level up too. The ones that annoy me are the random spawn ones. Spent an hour doing laps of Kadara last night for a final cache and no luck. Similar thing happened on Voeld but after leaving and returning it showed up so I'll check back after I'm done on Havarl. I left Havarl thinking I had to wait for something to trigger that bridge. After hitting 100% on Eos, Voeld and Kadara I realised I probably missed something so I went back and found some damn steps haha.

Eos is my favourite planet so far. Seems like they put all their eggs in that one. It's cool working through the story with the previously failed colonies, learning what happened and just the events that unfold. The interest in the rest of the planets so far seems to burn out pretty quickly.

For those who have been into this for longer how hard are gold extractions for multiplayer? I kind of cheated a bit and looked up how to make sure I get the 3x romance and cryptographer trophies in one play through and I've already got the friendly fire one. Don't really want to have to play through again on insanity. I have been casually hitting the multiplayer but just bronze strikes and have my engineer dude to level 13 but still standard gear. Player base is a bit thin on bronze but I did some silver and gold searches and there seems to be more players there so at least it doesn't look too hard to try and get a carry.

Finished this up yesterday.

Overall I really enjoyed it minus some of the graphical issues, and my main gripe in the frame rate drops.

I don't know if it's just because I haven't played the original trilogy in ages but I feel like I enjoyed the Tempest crew more than the Normandy crew. Constantly had Jaal in my squad because I loved his character.

Hopefully one day it gets a sequel that isn't a development cluster **** because this was a solid base to build from.
