Swans settle on three inclusions
By Jason Phelan, 5:56 PM Fri 02 May 2008, afl.com.au

THE SYDNEY Swans have settled on three changes for their clash against the Western Bulldogs with Peter Everitt and Ben Mathews in for their first games of the season, and Henry Playfair to play his first game for the club.

Everitt and Playfair have been hampered by knee and hamstring injuries respectively, while Mathews’ career tally has been stuck on 196 games while he worked toward peak form in the reserves.

Jesse White drops back to the emergency list after a debut to remember. Luke Ablett is out with a calf strain, and Nick Davis has been dropped.

Nick Smith and Luke Brennan are the other emergencies.

Im glad Mathews is back in the team as he is currently on 196 games and i want him to reach 200 before he reitres. Also he has been the best player in the reserves and for that reason alone he deserves to be the one to come in for the injured Ablett.

look, i don't begrudge mathews getting to 200, and he has many fine qualities, and hopefully his defensive ability will be used to its best against the dogs, coz we'll need it
but i DO have reservations, i am concerned that this is not a step forward in the overall development of the new-look side
i am happy to be proved wrong

Doesn't really worry me whether it's a step forward or backward, but I'd much rather have Mathews in our side than Brennan!

SS you must be very excited!

What can I say, I'm stoked.

I just want him to go out happy and get his four games, that would be the best realistic conclusion.

But here's hoping he pulls out a few 20-30 pos blinders, kicks a few goals and overtakes Jude and Ablett as key mids and holds his spot in the side.

I think Mathews for Ablett is a no-brainer. The sort of roles Ablett gets are really Benny's bread and butter.

Is it pretty much a given that he will go to Aker?
If so, which Swan goes to Cooney who is our most in-form midfielder at the moment?

We may have a problem of our own with Goodes, Hahn has the size & motor to go with him but is too valuable now in the forward line to waste on a negative role.
Addison (a NSW boy!) is very gutsy and may get a crack, wont drop his head or back away from a physical contest but I'm worried Goodes will be a little too good overhead.

I'd be very surprised to see Mathews play on Aker. Paul Bevan is the most obvious choice for him.

If West plays, I'd expect Mathews to play on either him or Cross, with Kirk taking the other. Kirk's done very well on West in the past, but on current form (and allowing for West's injury) Cross is the more dangerous of the two at the moment so Kirk might stand him.

Jack is probably a good chance to play at least some of the match on Cooney since, of all our tagger-types, he is the quickest by far. The main worry with that match-up would be Cooney's height advantage, which might mean switching Jack and Bevan around, especially if Cooney spends time out of the centre square. Alternatively, McVeigh might get brought back into a run-with role and Jack allowed to run a bit freer. Roos said at last week's post match that he was wary of giving Jack important tagging roles every week and might give him a break from it pretty soon.
