It is a good poll of 2 similar players. Both rack it up but aren't that damaging. I would say Boyd gets a tiny bit more of it but he butchers it a tiny bit more as well. I prefer Thompson more because he doesn't think he's a superstar like Boyd does.

This is the complete opposite of Boyd's personality. It literally couldn't be further from the truth. Very humble person.

As for the poll, obviously I say Boyd.

body probably, he's always up there with the contested possesions and aclearances, i think he was first in those two stats this year , both player butcher the ball but boyd at least dominates the inside stuff

Both have disposal efficiency around the same mark as Ablett, Hodge and Judd. However they do handball more, which generally results in higher efficiency figures. Conversely though, being in teams with sub-par midfields mean they are usually under far more pressure when kicking then the other elite mids of the game. For what is worth, I reckon Thompson is slightly ahead for his better kicking and evergreen performances despite being the only competent midfielder in his team (no bias :p )

2011 stats...

Boyd - Disposals 701 - Effective disposals 62% - Clangers 154 - Tackles 113 - Goals 8 - Goal Assists 22
Thompson - Disposals 673 - Effective disposals 68% - Clangers 136 - Tackles 119 - Goals 8 - Goal Assists 22

Pretty even.

Can't split them.

Both work hard, Thompson probably more so because he doesn"t have the support around him. But I think Boyd is a better leader.

When he's allowed to play the role, I think Thompson's outside game is significantly better than Boyd's. He's definitely more of goalkicker. Back in his first couple of years with us, before Goodwin and Edwards moved out of the midfield, Thommo would quite often kick 2 or 3 goals a game. Even kicked 6 one day. Since then, he's been forced to become more and more of a clearance player, than a runner. Barely ever gets to rest up forward anymore either. He's actually a quality outside player when given the chance though, and he's very good off both feet. Has the odd brainfade, but his footskills are very good.
I rate Boyd as the superior inside player, but Thommo's got a more complete game.

I think its fair to say that both players are extractors and accumulate a lot of the pill without being super damaging or super efficient, and the actual stat based on effeteness can be misleading because both these players dish off plenty of in tight handballs and short clearing kicks etc.. Having said that they are both elite inside ball winners but Thompson gets the edge because he has a more damaging outside game but since he lacks midfield support these days he's forced to do more of the hard stuff.

Yes, i was quite surprised to see Thompsons low goal tally this season, always remember him as a 20-25 goal a year midfielder, both guns, Thompson just for mine, great poll of two criminally underrated players.

pretty close poll. Who do people think is going to have the better year?

Going to have pretty similar years IMO

Both will have great output for their respective teams and for any fantasy coaches who pick them up

Good poll, and results show that :thumbsu: You'd be happy with either really

Fantastic poll:thumbsu:

This is very tough as I admire both players. Tough, uncompromising players that have worked hard on their games to be at this level. I will pick Boyd because I have seen him play more live and I have a greater appreciation of him.

Both fantastic players though.

Tough poll. I leaned towards Boyd given I think his inside work is genuinely elite, but his disposal is a notable notch lower than the average IMO, so I'm gonna abstain from voting out of respect to Thompson, who I think is somewhat underrated.
