East Geelong / Essenlong
LOLled.
Anyone know the contract situation of 1/2cat? Skeeta has been pretty poxy the last few years...

Modern Geelong = 90s Ess = 80s Hawks = 70s Tigs in terms of coach production.

{actually think it's probably a good career move for him - if he was going to get limited match-day opportunities with you guys, he'll get more responsibility with us}

Awww Essendon, so cute trying to be us. Good assistants won't make up for their terrible players though.

Good luck to Matty, great bloke.

The same terrible players who beat you in 2011?

Enjoy your time at the top. It's lasted 5 years but won't forever.

cookie was on the rush hour yesterday and said 3 clubs wanted to talk to egan.cookie said egan was more than welcome to stay it was up to matty to go and get more experience and one day come back to the cat land.cookie also said he would like to put milhouse and otto on half year contracts love ya work cookie.

While Essendon poaching our staff is getting really old, and I'd hoped he'd effectively take Sando's place as one of our assistants, I can't begrudge Matty Egan the opportunity - you have to take career opportunities where you find them. Best wishes to a loyal club stalwart, who I hope will end up getting a senior coaching gig one day. The man's a class act in every sense.

This Ess raiding Geelong stuff is classic Sheedy isn't it?

The guy who counted Mark Harvey, Dean Bailey, Mark Thompson, Neale Daniher, Terry Daniher et cetera as his assistants over the course of his career?

Successful football clubs wind up generating a multitude of coaches, and they're always going to go elsewhere. Thompson was brought to Essendon because of late, the club has had a tin ear for talent (See: Knights), and it's only natural he would bring people he knows are of high calibre across.

You've got an embarassment of riches when it comes to coaches at Geelong. No need to get up in arms about it.

Bloody heck, he's been great with developing our young players, not good for us. STFU Essendon, STFU. I think I heard Cook say on Triple M the other day that he definitely wanted to keep Matthew but he understood if he'd want to gain experience outside the club, so they've probably been expecting that another club would attempt to poach him even if we didn't know which one that would be.

Shows how much Mark rates other Ex Bombers players if none of them has been appointed to the coaching staff

You clod.

Former Essendon players - James Hird, Sean Wellman, Dean Wallis (susp), Bomber Thompson.

Played elsewhere - Matthew Egan, Simon Goodwin.

To quote Michael Hibberd "shut your clams!"

Congrats on your extremely meaningful win, and the huge impact it had on the competition.

No doubt he will be on a shitload more money as an assistant at Essendon. Can't blame him.

Thanks for the congrats, but to be fair Brad wasn't saying it had any meaning.

Some Geelong douche said our players were terrible and Brad simply reminded him or her that they weren't so terrible when they wiped their collective arse with 22 Geelong jumpers in round 15.

But if we want to attach meaning - Essendon were the only side Geelong didn't defeat in 2011. There you go.

I think a few of you guys are still feeling it a bit from the grand final celebrations. Very poor posting by the majority of Geelong supporters today.

If you do want to poach something from Essendon how about our humility.
We lost McCartney to the Bulldogs recently. No crying about it, just a pat on the back, best wishes then off we go to find the next Geelong assistant to poach.

I dunno man, those same players also managed to lose to Richmond, Melbourne & North. I, the Geelong douche, stand by my assessment. Your players are terrible. :)

And I'm totally not intentionally riling up visiting Essendon supporters who have followed the link in their topic, absolutely not. I swear. >_>

On the last bit, have you not noticed the almost universal best wishes from our posters? Of course not, too busy frothing at the mouth because I called your players terrible.

Good luck to Ego, although one thing concerns me is the fact that the dons have sent him straight off to the draft camp...... he was our development coach after all, I wonder how much of Wells' inside info he has meaning that he may nick a few gems that Wells had his eye on....

Food for thought.

lol lol lol lol

Hey nimwit. We had him for 12 years and made him what he was.
You only had him for 1 year for christ sake.

And he went to a head coaching role you knob jockey.

Whatever we say in THIS forum, we can as it's the Geelong board.

And a 4-point win is 'wiped our arses'?

We were 13-0, having by that stage just about locked away a top-4 spot and were in a heavy training load. Bombers played like men possessed, and got a vital win.

Perhaps if Essendon showed about 20% of that determination and effort against sides like Richmond, Melbourne etc your side could do better than squeak into the 8 and get thumped in Elimination finals.

However, on the OP it's just the nature of things now. Geelong's culture and now five seasons of success, and the people who have been a part of that will be in high demand by other sides. Egan has most likley been offered a bigger salary and a more perhaps integral role at Essendon than we could offer/give him. He's most likely be looking at coaching for his own career at some stage, having lost his earning potential as a player just as his output would have guaranteed him a great contract after 2007.

Cannot blame him one bit for taking an opportunity, and as Cat fans, look upon this is pure confiemation that GEELONG is now the model that other clubs are looking at in order to succeed. People want to imitate the best.

Geelong, after many many years, and indeed i cannot think of anyone bar say Damian Drum who has coached another club after playing at Geelong up till this point, is the leader and the others want to follow us.

If anything that is absolute validatiaon of Brian Cooke's 'Good to Great' mantra. Others crave greatness. Geelong has demonstrated that we ARE now great.:thumbsu:

Sorry to see him finally break away from the Geelong FC. But if he has real ambitions to make his career in coaching, it seems like a natural progression. Good luck, Eags :thumbsu:
That's one way of looking at it s'pose. Another is the club has been outstandingly good to him and to piss off when he's given so little back is ordinary. A matter of perspective I guess.

Depends what u class as "given little back" - he has had a coaching role for 3-4 years now, surely he is allowed to progress his career and expand his horizons, especially when he doesnt know if will get an offer like this again?

Good luck to him.

Seemed to spend most of his time in a development role with the VFL side. He'd have a bit to offer to your young KPD, definitely. Came from nowhere and turned himself into an AA CHB and he's now had a fair apprenticeship in a development role. Obviously, Mark Thompson would know much more than any of us would and he must think that Egan has plenty to offer. I'd trust his judgment.

This is the one area we have covered.

Yep! Depends what you class as "given back". For mine, two years isn't a lot given how the club has supported him through his long rehab.

Matt Egan took up a coaching role in 2009, working with the Cats young players and its VFL squad as he continued to rehabilitate a broken navicular that has cut short his career.

Im kinda okay with the exodus of assistant coaches we've had in the last few years. Some new blood from outside the club can provide fresh idea's and a new voice (re C. Scott) , plus with the success we've had of late i can imagine the best and brightest of the recently retired would be falling all over themselves to come to our club.

Go you magnificent Catters!!

Did we actually replace McCartney last year?
