Jay Clark on Fox Footy last night discussed coaches pay out clauses.

It came up while discussing Beveridge. Beveridge signed his current deal in 2022. The AFLCA negotiated the 12 month min pay out clause this year. Beveridge could be looking at a 6 month pay out, unless he was able negotiate more in 2022.

Clark mentioned that Nicks and Justin Longmuir are two coaches that signed this year and therefore do have the 12 month pay out clause.

Doesn't this only apply to AFL subsidised clubs?

It was in the first 10 mins of last night's Midweek Tackle on Kayo/Fox.

Maybe someone can post the clip (it's beyond me), in the meantime here's a quick transcript I've done with my phone,

Glenn McFarlane:'You've got some clarity on Luke Beveridge's contract and where we're at with that at the moment'.

Jay Clark: 'Yeah, I think with the Brett Ratten situation, what was that? 18 months ago now. It was a complete disaster. Wasn't it, we had the former St Kilda coach, who was sacked with two years running and only got a six month termination'

Jon Ralph: 'It was easy to sack him wasn't it?'

Jay Clark: 'Yeah. Which was horrific treatment. Really, though the AFLCA been working really hard to essentially update or improve the circumstances or the contracts around coaches who are let go. So, the problem is though, they haven't all kicked in across the board. With mentioning this, of course, because Luke Beveridge is fighting to save his job. What is the situation if he does get let go? Well, we know Matthew Nicks and Justin Longmuir, because they have re-signed since this new clause came in they now have 12 month termination clauses. So that's you know a full year salary which is a lot more protection. The issue with Luke Beveridge is he signed his last deal in 2022 so he doesn't have the full year's salary payout.'

I'm not making light of CTE, it is very serious issue.

Does anyone remember if Nicks got a lot of concussions during his playing career?

Just looked up some of the symptoms:
memory loss - this could explain why some players keep getting games, he forgets how bad they played the week before.
confusion - he has trouble with gameplans or lack thereof.
impaired judgment - he obviously can't identify talent
impulse control problems - ?? Picking McSpudley is like crack for Nicks.

No, he's wrong. It only effects contracts for clubs that receive special AFL funding, he's only using half the story.

This is a new clause the AFLCA negotiated late last year.

Clark presented it as both Nicks and Longmuir were covered as they inked new deals this year.

Everyone else will roll over onto this if/when they sign new contracts.

It's not a new clause negotiated by the AFLCA, they negotiated the previous 6 month clause out to 12 months. But it still only relates to AFL clubs that require special assistance, which we do not.

What is the deal with Nicks and McHenry? I know coaches have their favourites but I've never seen a coach invest so many games into a player that lets him down so badly. Even Dmac doesn't compare. I'm starting to think this is some sort of S&M thing. Nicks enjoys the punishment.

Nicks treatment of Curtin only highlights how frightened he is of his job. Curtin has played technically, just one game of AFL football and Nicks has managed to absolutely ruin his confidence. I knew he wanted to play Curtin deep against big tall forwards. What a disgraceful coach and frankly, the AFLPA should rip Adelaide to shreds. They cant dictate selection, but they can sure as hell have a word about the treatment and well being of a player who has been embarrassed on the national stage by his coach.

Subbing curtin for nank at half time makes no sense no matter which way you spin it (unless he was injured). Its indefensible.

Tactically it’s a sidewise move that brings in nothing new player-wise.

on the other hand it’s only at great risk incase you do get an injury and then leave yourself down one for a whole half (which of course happened). When has nankervis ever been known as an impact player?

Baffling decision, which is very much a recurring event.
