The following excerpts from the HS tomorrow are quotes from an interview by Scarlo to be aired on Fox Footy’s Open Mike on Monday.
Geelong legend Matthew Scarlett believed assistant coach Daryn Cresswell had been told he would replace coach Mark Thompson when the Cats defender threatened to walk out on the club.

Scarlett publicly threatened to leave Geelong if the Cats did not reappoint Thompson during the club's 2006 review, with the long-time coach winning the following year's premiership.

Scarlett says he nearly had a punch-up with teammate Steve Johnson - now a close friend - because he believed the mercurial forward played for himself.

Cresswell -i think we dodged a bullet big time there -didnt he end up being charged with embezzlement or fraud -got to be careful what you say these days on forums -after what happened to those posters on Hot Copper

Scarlett tells Fox Footy's Open Mike on Monday night he had a gut feel about Cresswell, urging club management to stay the course with Thompson. "I was going into bat for Bomber. I said I would have left," he said in the program. Gambling addict Cresswell was later jailed for fraud.

In other revelations:

HE knew his career was coming to a close when he could not contain himself and was suspended for punching Hayden Ballantyne last year.

SCARLETT believes the club's fortunes improved in 2007 when night owls including himself and Cameron Mooney stopped all-night drinking sessions and arriving at training in a poor state.

Yeah, the all-night drinking sessions before training may have had a slight negative effect on their on-field performance

Yep,got a holiday at Her Majestys pleasure for a year or so

Hot Copper ???
Sounds like a stripper name

Shows how there may only be a Bee's hair between a club merging , combining into a super group and exploding , destroying a decade worth of recruitment.

I agree , with some others , Scarlett comes across as an acerbic type of bloke that could easily just take a dislike to someone. I have a feeling , you wouldn't get any credit from Scarlo , he would start giving you some respect once you have made a deposit or two , contributed to the teams win , showed your worth etc.

Still it all sounds rather like a script , the olds and the young's , cultures , races etc a Clash of Titans if you will. The merging of new players in with established is such sensitive area , for instance I believe that was the main cause of The Colbert Conundrum.

Is it possible for someone to please record Scarlo's interview, this Povolina Cats supporter can't afford Foxtel :(

About Scarlo, I'd always thought he was the type who doesn't suffer fools gladly, which is a quality I really like! At last year's Carji Greaves, with confidence enhanced by bubbles, I approached Scarlo, who was surrounded by Boy Cats and I thanked him, wished him well and it came up I was from Sydney. Scarlo, without missing a beat said he was born in Bondi and spent a few minutes trying to convince me he was from Sydney and that any info that said otherwise was lies. He was absolutely the sweetest guy, gave me a huge cuddle and had photos with me. I thought it extremely generous of him considering it was almost like his retirement party.

Just really hoping someone will record the interview, can't bear the thought of missing it.

To me, and I have no personal knowledge of him, he is the kind of bloke that is really cold and closed off to most people.
Hoever, once you prove to him that you have a common bond - and that may take years - he will be the most loyal mate you could have - Tick like that will be there forever under any terms any time.

No i read about that Hot Copper forum the other week-a stock market forum -where posters (punters) talk about different listed companies-like XYZ Nickel is 15 cents could be a good buy etc

However about 4 or 5 posters really ripped into a few Western Australian Mining companies -i dont know what they said -but the directors of those companies are know suing those posters for defamation -its going to court -and they were talking big dollars 50 to 100k -plus the directors are quite legally -being funded in their legal cases -by their companies funds -thats how serious it is

So you know -if you post on a forum -you have to be very careful what you say -you cant hide behind your keyboard

I never wanted to say it but I completely agree.
I love him because he is one of the greatest Geelong players of all time.
He is also a shizen bloke.

You’ve hit the mark there dazbroncos.

I think all full on Cats know how crucial Scarlo has been to our on-field resurgence. Not so much to our off-field one perhaps.

Much is spoken about how important it was for the club when a strong leadership group was formed when the club was ailing and how in many ways that group took ownership of the club. The names of Harley and Ling became synonymous with the emergence of the club as a force. Not so much the quiet unassuming but very direct Scarlo.

Not only was he influential in the early days of that leadership group but the story goes he often got the playing group to his property for some team bonding when the team was under pressure after we’d become successful. Not necessarily for heart-to-heart stuff either. Just some general messing about.

Probably the most telling comment about his off-field importance came from Cooky when Scarlo announced his retirement when Cooky said he called him The Senator cos everything related to the playing group had to be passed by him.

The Bullies are just so fortunate to have him around their club at the moment.

Oh! And if for no other reason his efforts in keeping Cresswell away from the head coaching role warrant him never having to buy a beer in Geelong for his lifetime.;)

"Get on board or GTFO"

Not a player would look him in the eye and not put in....

Missed in more ways than one....
