Love Scarlo, but geez, the interview wasn't Frost vs Nixon! There was hardly anything of substance that we didn'y already know. The direction was also shocking with far too many closeups of Matty, with little room for the interview to 'breath', edited as it was.

Couldn't help but feel Mike was never comfortable in Scarlo's presence, too afraid that he might cause offence. Not Mike's fault, as Matty can be pretty intimidating. But it isn't the best way to go about trying to interview someone. Mike needs a 'chatterer' on TV, compared to print, and Scarlo ain't that.

Would have preferred/hope to see in the future, a proper sit-down, serious interview with Ling. He'd have great stories to tell, would provide greater insight into the club, our rise from the ashes, and the game in general.

From that I get 3 things.

1/ If I was playing in the back pocket I'd love him to be my full back
2/ I wouldn't like having a beer with him
3/ I wouldn't like playing poker with him. He'd take me to the cleaners.

His old man was a good bloke to have a beer with. But dangerous. Because he was easily offended by strangers. And prone to solve these irritations with extreme violence. Regardless of the odds.

He sees everything in black and white does Scarlo.

The most disappointing aspect of the interview was him running off the press over a matter that should have been kept in club. Piss poor!

Which was that?
Disappointed Mike didnt ask about the Justin Murphy incident (I still have no idea what this is....).

When Scarlo thought Bomber was on thin ice he made a call to MS briefing him on the internal goings on at the club re that matter.

Doubt that. Reckon the club would have supended him had they known. Confidential briefings to journos are poor form on such internal matters - to put mildly.

If you mean that Scarlo called MS about it, MS wrote an article about the phone call.

Mentioning the source?

I dont recall the article personally but I'm pretty sure.
Not 100% sure of the content of the article either other than "if bomber isnt resigned I'm walking".
Other members with better memories would likely correct me though, I was in Adelaide at the time :p

It was definitely made public that Scarlett said that he'd leave the club if Bomber got the arse. What I don't recall is whether Creswell was explicitly mentioned at the time.

If the piece was as transparent as that it sheds a different light on it. I don't recall the piece either and I don't have the SA excuse.:)

The way it came across to me purely based on the interview, was that he gave-up information that should have been kept in-house in a sort of clandestine way.

I really hope your take on it is right cos it was the only part of the interview that disapponted me. Apart from him being incapable of a smile.

Like I said though I dont really recall exactly what the article said (IIRC it was read to me over the phone by my father) but I'll go with below.
The Creswell bit was surprising.

Pretty sure the story went along the lines like "Scarlett has stated that if Bomber gets the sack I will walk" but definitely mentioned that Scarlett was the source

End of season drinks.
Murphy told the group didn't want him there.
Murphy rocked up.
A young Scarlo allegedly invited Justin outside to have a chat Scarlo came back in untouched Justin not so much

Nice :D
Murphy was someone I was excited about having at first then QUICKLY changed my mind. I really think he did damage while he was there.

He wears a beard almost as well as Maxy Rooke!

I thought it was a good interview with a bit of new info about his career. It was interesting to hear about his 'altercations' with Stevie J and Chappy to a lesser extent. I also found it interesting that he said him and Mooney were called out in front of the group in 06 because they were leading most of the piss ups, along with Ablett for different reasons.

MS wrote about it the next day,so it was common knowledge. Not sure it was common knowledge that there were 1/2 dozen other players with Scarlett when he rang MS.

For all his flaws, perceived or otherwise, I reckon Scarlo was just the character the GFC needed at that time.

He had mongrel, an insatiable desire to win, and I believe, can therefore take some credit for injecting some steel into the clubs spine on his arrival. We weren't called the handbaggers for nothing at that point in time.

He refused to accept mediocrity or laziness, and was the General who rallied the troops and turned their attitude around.

Well that bit is plainly wrong.

Really?? I'm with AM's thoughts in his previous post:

"You’ve hit the mark there dazbroncos.

I think all full on Cats know how crucial Scarlo has been to our on-field resurgence. Not so much to our off-field one perhaps.

Much is spoken about how important it was for the club when a strong leadership group was formed when the club was ailing and how in many ways that group took ownership of the club. The names of Harley and Ling became synonymous with the emergence of the club as a force. Not so much the quiet unassuming but very direct Scarlo.

Not only was he influential in the early days of that leadership group but the story goes he often got the playing group to his property for some team bonding when the team was under pressure after we’d become successful. Not necessarily for heart-to-heart stuff either. Just some general messing about.

Probably the most telling comment about his off-field importance came from Cooky when Scarlo announced his retirement when Cooky said he called him The Senator cos everything related to the playing group had to be passed by him.

The Bullies are just so fortunate to have him around their club at the moment.

Oh! And if for no other reason his efforts in keeping Cresswell away from the head coaching role warrant him never having to buy a beer in Geelong for his lifetime.;)"

Maybe after 06 he refused to accept it... Getting on the piss all night and rocking up to training not in top shape on regular occasions (from the sounds of it) sounds like accepting mediocrity to me.

He didn't change until he got put up in front of the group 1st with the leading teams thing and told to pull his head in....
That said him changing his attitude and training would have set an example for others to follow
