Sigh... we knew this one was coming.

The Memory Lane series has had a couple of weeks off. Showdown memories have been done to death and GWS memories... well, we'll give it 10 years and then have a go at making a thread on them.

But Adelaide vs West Coast - there is significant history here. Bad history. Part of me says let's give it another week and then crank it up again next week with a "Leigh Colbert mark" homage. But another part says it might be quite cathartic to revisit some of the atrocities of our past. Let's just man up and do it, eh?

To visiting West Coast fans, welcome. Hope you and the Swans have fought out a tough, bruising encounter on a hot day with lots of reports, a close finish and double over-time. This thread is a chance for both Crows and Eagles fans to reminisce on the great clashes, stoushes, fights, marks and hits of yesteryear to help rekindle some of the passion of Crows-Eagles matches past.

Let's start with the tough one; the one-two preliminary final punch West Coast delivered in 2005 and 2006. Ugh.

I've blocked out the games as best as I can and never watched the tapes but a few memories occasionally seep into my nightmares. In 2005 I remember us bombing the ball repeatedly into the forward fifty, only for Dean Cox to mark every single one of them. He was impassable. He and Seaby combined for 22 marks (somehow the club misplaced those stats and we went with the same inept ruck duo 12 months later). The game seemed close-ish on the scoreboard but it never felt like we were going to win. We'd botched a home qualifying final against St Kilda which put us on the path to the House Of Pain. Coincidentally it was a Ricciuto hit on former Crow Tyson Stenglein against the Eagles in Round 22 that cost us our captain in that pivotal game.

In 2006 West Coast finished top but then fluffed a home qualifying final against Sydney which ruined our fun. They probably did it on purpose. It meant we copped our nemesis again instead of a dream preliminary final against our red and white whipping boys. The game was a heartbreaker. We'd battled to a 4 goal lead at half time but Cousins and co ran amok in the second half and they nailed us. I remember Bock kicking a couple of late, great goals and we drew within a kick with 30 seconds left. We got the all important centre clearance and were just about to bomb it forward where Ian Perrie would no doubt have clunked it then calmly slotted it from 50 for the win... when the umpire called the pissiest free kick of all time on Tyson Edwards. Game over. Thanks umps ... ok, maybe a little poetic licence there :p

We have actually won a couple of finals against West Coast along the way but these pale into insignificance compared to 2005/06 and are largely forgotten.

Random other memories... that game in Perth when Cummings kicked 14 goals... Shaun Rehn's chase down tackle on Peter Matera... Simon Goodwin kicking 7 goals at AAMI in a rare Craig win... Ricciuto's massive hit on Dean Kemp (my favourite non-AFC player)... John Worsfold's massive hit on Modra at Subi (high quality photo below)

I believe the hit by Roo was on Selwood that got him a week.

Then in 2006 we had Cousins running around in the second half as if he was on something!

This week it is time for retribution and given West Coast have lost to Sydney, we win next week and we gain a two game break on them and top 4 is nearly assured.

Can anyone dig up Van berlo's interview about that second half of Cousins? he played him on that day and if i recollect right he was amazed at cousins second half fitness. i rekon if you colate that with some of the admissions cousiins has made in the last few years, he definately wasn't on VB

In 97 Wc came to footy park in the first week of the finals as favourites. Game was moved because of the Diana funeral an all.

WC playing for their season next week, gonna get 1 report and Darlings injured. We can rape what % they have left as well and go 8 points ahead of them (effictively 12 points or 3 games with 6 to play as swans up by 9 goals)

Thing is, we don't need show our hand now, we can use this as a build up to the finals..

Remember that interview afterwards and that flag will always be tainted.

Who is the report? Missed that.

Roo's shirtfront on Kemp that would now get him a life ban.

The 1997 Qualifying Final where we beat them by 50 at home with arguably Godra's last significant game in tricolours.

We had extra time in a pre season match in 1994, Modra took a screamer on mcintosh.

I do remember the round 22 match in 2005 that saw us travel to Subi and us get the win to take top spot

Oh how glorious it was that day. All my work mates were taunted until i could taunt no more. I even rocked up to our weekly squash game in my Crows guernsey on the Monday after

They told me they'd see me in the GF.

And then we lost to the Saints and we had to come back to Subi for the PF. What i remember from that match:

****ity **** ****

I like to remember the last round in '05 when we beat them in Subi to take out the minor premiership... the rest of the year can get stuffed! That home final against St. Kilda killed us.... was always going to be tough to win twice in Subiaco in three weeks.

At the end of both years a lot of things didn't go our way.. which means stuff all now I know... but they were our years.

I remember standing at the members bar at half time in prelim in 06 talking to my brother about getting to melbourne for the GF next week. Still gets to me :( Heartbreaking loss i would prefer to forget.

We have had more against the Pies. WCE 2nd on the list.

Taking into account of 05 and 06 prelims, I'd say WCE were first on the list.

Even though it was Collingwood who did us in the prelim in 02, I never expected us to win that one. 06 on the other hand....

I agree, not a hell of a lot of material here for this thread.

But my nomination...Round 22 1998 at Subiaco. I had the pleasure of being in Perth surrounded by Eagles supporters that day.

My main memory is of the ball heading out of bounds on our half forward line at a crucial juncture of the game, with Josh Wooden leading the race for the ball. He decided to let the ball head out of bounds when McLeod nipped in in front of him, pounced on the ball before it went out then slotted one of his trademarks from the boundary line from about 40. Knew it was our day. Would like to say I thought it might be our year at that stage but not quite.

My companions and the local media were not best pleased with Wooden.
