Yep, but what I like also is his size and shape. He looks like he'll grow into a Nathan Buckley type.

And he doesn't shirk it when he gets tackled. He frees his arms and gets the handball out while copping a bit of treatment.

Looks to be the perfect balance between inside and out that we need to complement McVeigh, Watson, Welsh, Lonergan

How do people rate his disposal (esp foot skills), compared to say, Zielbel

Looking at the disposal of the midfielders Rich and Hartlett are a long way in front.

From my limited viewing of Hartlett and Ziebell i would say that Rich is clearly in front, i have seen 2 years worth of him, but Ziebell is front of Hartlett.

SA vs NSW in a game that SA were dominant in Hartlett missed targets by foot all game.

The one's that are ineligible are:

Harwood, Tapscott, Scully, Lucas, Fitzpatrick, Butcher (2009 draft)

Weller (2010 draft)

How about something like this for our draft, first 4 rounds:

1st Round: Hurley/Hartlett
2nd Round: Swift/Hill
3rd Round: Broadbent/Banner/Shiels
4th Round: Redden/Browne

could be something like that, wouldnt mind a ruckmen with our 2nd or 3rd round, but would prefer the better midfielders be picked first, then ruckmen later or in the pre season draft.

The bolded players I don't think will fall as far as that. Other than that, good effort.

Yep I noticed that as well, could've had an off day I reckon. Haven't watched his SANFL footy, wonder if he has gotten a bit excited running flat out on the wings then ends up shanking a couple like he did a couple of times during the Champs. Good signs though running flat out into space, shows that he is agressive and likes to run into space creating opportunities, getting away from the taggers. Has no problems from the stand still, but when running flat out and slightly off balance, his technique goes a little hey-wire, like most understandably, just doesn't have freakish skills.

In my opinion, he is worth our last selection in the draft, only because he hits packs hard, has a footy brain and has a thumping, long kick for a small fella. Hasn't got the smooth skills, height or pace, but he is an old fashioned type footballer who would be worth a shot. Would be a good VFL footballer, nuggety type.

Ant

Would Banner be suitable as a late draft pick or as a rookie ?

I doubt he would still be around for the rookie draft. Someone will look at him somewhere around the third round. He simply wins to much of the footy so someone will take the chance they can improve what he does with the ball. It is not like he is totaly useless in the kicking department and he does get forward and kicks goals.
The only reason i shy away from him a bit is we already have enough players in our side with kicking deficiencies.

Do not agree when you say he hasn't got pace. He has enough toe to get himself out of trouble.

Come on Merv , i think your memory may be a bit clouded. He did not miss targets all game. Yes he had a couple of shockers during the game but he had plenty of good stuff as well. In the game against Vic Country his kicking eff was over 90%.

The ability to find the pill like Banner does, will see him drafted. Skills can be worked on, just look at players like Stanton and Jobe who have both developed into reasonably skilled midfielders.

I dont know if banner is for us, but he will play league footy.

Essendon need a skillful mid. I think that Prismall should be targeted. not Rishcitelli.

First Draft Pick ? Needs or best available player

There has been much discussion about EFC's first draft selection.

Do we select the best available player or do we select for needs ?

I would prefer that EFC select for needs because they have a poor history of converting forward in to backs.

Therefore if EFC decide their first priority is a Key Back - choose a key back

or if it is a midfielder - choose a midfielder.

why not both?
if hurley is still available at our pick he will be the best available player and the player that suits our needs.

even if he isnt available, a player like hartlett would then be available and he would also suit our needs as we need a clean outside midfeilder

why's that cos you know him.......
i'm going to hate saying this but i'm with you for once on this.

Re: First Draft Pick ? Needs or best available player

hurley being a key defender and the fact that he is close enough to the best available means that we should take him.

I admit my memory isn't what it used to be but i don't think it's at the stage where i insert things that didn't happen....yet...lol

I have the game on tape so i will have a look when i get a chance and i was only talking about the one game that i have seen him play.

I didn't make a judgment about his kicking overall but only in the one game i have seen him play.

You see way more of them than me so i am happy to bow to your better knowledge.....but i will be checking the tape :D
