As dissapointed as we may be in missing out on getting a couple of players yesterday....we need to realise that we just can't afford the big $$$, just yet.

Connolly's article in the Sun this morning confirm that we could not match offers.

Yesterday's decision by the MFC to bite the bullet and not to match offers for either Prismall & Warnock, was just prudent and responsible decision making by a club that knows that its a hard road ahead.

I for one wish that the previous board had taken the same approach, instead of seeing us 4 Mill in the red, the result of some overblown and extravangant player payments as it turned out.

Good on Bails and Connolly. It shows me that we at least have made a start on the long journey back .

Now is the time to support the club and not criticise them for not landing a couple of players in the short term . Remember that we get still 3 picks in the top 20. Long term, in say 3, 4 or 5 years , hopefully we'll all look back on yesterday as one of the days that contributed to the return to power , of our great club. Get on board.

I don't understand how we couldn't match offers for Prismall, he went for pick 39 for God's sake.

Something doesn't sit right.

Although I'm happy we still have pick 1, dunno about anyone else but I wasn't too confident we would still have it come the end of trade week.
contracted players have to agree to the trades, Essendon offered him 900k over three years

Exactly right . The MFC chose NOT to match the 900k as we simply can't afford the $$$. At this point in time, we are currently not in the league of better financed clubs. Our main priority at the moment is to reduce debt and keep the club going. So be it. We need to support the clubs direction in this.

Secondly, if in 2009 we happen to win a few games along the way, terrific. Will be a bonus. Like I said in other threads, its a long haul. $$$ stability first , winning games and finals etc , unfortunately, at this point in time are a second priority.

Winning games will bring memberships, the memberships bring money and the money brings us overpaid players who send us back to a $5 mil debt.

Thats too defeatest and pessismistic Dez. Have faith in the current board. We won't make the same mistakes again. Rewards will come.:thumbsu:

I certainly don't think we'll be making the mistake of over-paying players again.

Not fussed we didn't do much in trade week, Warnock or Prismall would have been nice but I can understand why we couldn't afford them.

I have stopped thinking about the draft since the end of the H&A season. Watts SHOULD be a lock at no.1, but I'll be more curious to see who we take at 17 and 19.

bringing in players on high $$$ will mean we never get out of debt. we have a lot of potential in our current squad, have faith. the new board and Bailey are taking a hard line with the club. not to long ago Hawthorn were in a very similar position to us and now their the arguably the strongest club in the competition

The deal with Geelong wasn't the problem. It was the fact that Prismall got offered better money elsewhere. Frankly, $300k for him is too much, and $400k for Warnock is ridiculous. Therefore, I'm glad with the way things turned out.

I agree that we probably should not have gone for Warnock as he demanded way too much money for someone who has such little experience, but I think that Prismall was affordable and could really help the club

Do you think Prismall is worth $300k? I don't. Maybe he will be in the future, but we also have to remember that he is coming off a knee reconstruction so there is no guarantee he will be 100% right. I didn't see much of him at Geelong but he doesn't seem to be a player that will win matches for us.

so even if we did get him we would be paying him 300k to sit on the sidelines for a season

Given the circumstances I think the club made the correct decisions. We also could have set a nasty precedent with player payments if we forked out those $$$ for Warnock/Prismall which we don't need just yet. "Prudent" is a good word to use.

Although ROK would have been nice there is no way in hell we should go for him in the PSD with the price on his head (& 28) but it is annoying when other clubs time and time again take advantage - (see my drunken rant :)). We'll just have to suck it up and improve our squad. I still think the PSD could be interesting though, there may be a couple of worthy youngsters. Looking forward to 2009 actually simply to see the entire squad improve.

Prismall is a slow outside mid. He doesn't take contested marks, his statistic for one percenters is woeful and his disposal is average . He is no loss and he isn't worth the money he will be paid.

i totally agree:thumbsu:

The draft is where the real action is gonna happen anyway...

If we pick wisely, it could really set us up for a crack at the flag in 5 years time...
