Midfield depth big concern for you guys next year I think, great backline, if tex gets fit, super forward line. Barlow word have helped and can't imagine with all the cash you guys have why 2 years at 300k wasn't worth it (the price I was told he's on at GC)
I think if you can get the midfield at least breaking even you'll be a flag contender. Hard to see now. Like Geelong our forward line is our Achilles heal, and the midfield looks like yours. Id be getting Cameron into the guts more next year, great player and brings the urgency that's needed in the midfield.

damm im really disappointed u blokes didnt get barlow - he would have suited ur midfield perfectly. my sincere commiserations. i hear from local sources firrito could be available?
Firrito would give the lesser-gws blues much needed experience to your backline...

Very meh about this whole situation. He probably would've improved us slightly if his body held up, but hopefully now we have to back some younger guys in.

Im not a sceptic who thinks Thommo will play most of the year next year so to me its exciting. It does leave the midfield a bit light on for experienced, bigger bodies but if we get a different, more dynamic look through there its only a positive.
Same here .......i heard the announcement, and simply said "Oh ok" ......just didn't bother me at all ?

$$$$ ?? Or more likely longer term deal. Everyone else is either leaving GC or wants to leave.
2 years is hardly an um-matchable longterm deal ?

Make no mistake we were after Barlow.

We failed to secure our man. Again. Is it a big deal? Its not great that's for sure.
An inadvertent great result for us

Default! Default!

I'm with you. Let's see what they've got! Could be an exciting year.

I suspect the GC deal will be one that would have melted this board if AFC had offered it. Don't think it's a 'failure to get' Barlow.

I reckon noble needs to be replaced with someone who is experienced and a not a south aussie. Could be a case that everyone is singing from the same hymn book and not enough challenging of views is going on.
Noble isnt a South Aussie. Fages isnt a South Aussie. Hamish O isnt a South Aussie.
Maybe thats our problem.
I mean with all the South Aussies and Ex Crows players and officals you have got, maybe we dont need to look outside our state.

But ..But ...But ....you said get any midfielder ....ANYONE!

Thought you'd be devastated ;)
We can still get the fat guy from Houghton Districts reserves through the PSD

For those that are posting it and claiming the trade period a massive failure, surely the draft period has the potential to offer much bigger wins. Some good rookie draft options floating around in the SANFL ?? Jansen or Schiller anyone ??
This draft won't impact 2017 though.

That was the key. We were just outside the pace setters in 2016 and needed a boost now. Close enough that a couple of quality players would let us have a real crack. It was the perfect time to part with some first round draft picks.

Disappointing offseason, but I'm not going to pretend like I'm particularly disappointed about Barlow. It was trade week where we were let down, we needed to bring in an A-Grade mid and yet all we did was trade Lyons for unders. The club likes to talk about the big picture and well this offseason there's not a lot to right home about in this respect.

My only hope is that our planned "quiet" trade week was due to having a big named free agent lined up for next season and hence we went into a bit of a holding pattern. Go to the draft, use next season to potentially bring a few younger mids up to speed in a competitive outfit and then hit 2018 hard.

At the end of the day it's not easy to attract A-Grade talent, we managed to convince one to come, but failed to get the deal over the line. Whilst I wouldn't call it a massive failure, it's just a bit of a nothing trade period. Last year we picked up a bunch of talented, yet largely unproven types with high ceilings, so we didn't need anymore of those types, so this season was either going to be a big name, or very little at all. I did think we might move on a few more fringe types for opportunities, but then it's difficult when these guys aren't getting AFL exposure.

There is one upside to all of this. The failure to land either Gibbs or Barlow should mean that we have plenty of room in next year's salary cap. We could use that room to pay out the final year of Mackay's contract. Maybe...
