Believing the club how? They have said nothing that he wont be playing:

http://www.afc.com.au/news/2016-10-07/midfielders-sign-for-one-more

"The two-time Club Champion and respected leader will continue to mentor Adelaide’s younger onballers, with a view to developing a coaching career once his playing days finish."

Then there is this from Thommo:

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport...t/news-story/d11a030f65c21cf8904f050cad7c5966

The very interesting and concerning quote is:

“I feel I still have a lot to contribute not just on game day, but also in mentoring our younger players coming through."

Unless someone can show me otherwise, nothing has come from the club or Thommo that he will be playing a reduced role in the seniors.

I don't find that quote that concerning, as reading between the lines it's Thommo justifying he's worth something when he isn't playing AFL.

Would he be mentioning that if he was a locked in best 22? I doubt it.

The most upsetting thing about not getting Barlow for me is that Thommo will likely fill the spot that Barlow could have filled.

That, and we did not go out of our way to improve our midfield.

Then again, I'm not super fussed about this one.

While Barlow is not the solution, he will improve our midfield. If the pros outweigh the cons, its a no brainer to get Barlow on board.

Improving our midfield was never going to happen overnight but take two to three trade periods. The bigger question is that will our premiership window still be realistically open and will we still be able to take advantage of our strong forward line or will that have regressed in 2-3 years time.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-11-07/delisted-docker-considering-potential-move-to-gold-coast

MICHAEL Barlow has met with Gold Coast as he looks for a club to continue his AFL career.

The 28-year-old ex-Docker met with potential new teammates David Swallow and Matt Rosa on the Gold Coast on Sunday to discuss a move to the Suns.

Gold Coast confirmed the club had spoken to Barlow, but the midfielder is understood to be considering his options.

Barlow is a ball magnet who played 126 games with the Dockers including the 2013 Grand Final, however he was delisted at the end of the season as the Dockers looked to blood younger players.

The talented midfielder had to fight his way into the AFL with the Dockers finally picking him up as a rookie in the 2010 draft.

He had a brilliant debut season before breaking his leg in round 14, polling 12 Brownlow votes up to that point.

The Suns are keen to add to their midfield stocks and Barlow could provide leadership and experience around the middle.

He showed last season when he played a run-with role he was still good enough to play AFL.

The first delisted free agency period closes on Tuesday.

I think you've interpreted that to suit what you wanted to read.

Bit of a worry that Crows have not gone all out for Barlow as lets face it if we had a offer for him he would not be looking at Gold Coast.
Makes you think if don't go for Barlow as DFA who we might be interested ins certainly looks like made spot for and if not why not keep Henderson.

How do you know that?

We could have an offer in front of him, if he's meeting with the Gold Coast then I'd take a guess and say he's looking $ over success. Nothing wrong with that, but I'd rather a guy be here because he wants to win, not because we're paying him the most.

There has been no noise from the club about us chasing him. Only from media.
Can see how this has happened. We have a hole in midfield. We have one quality midfielder above 25 years of age. Barlow is desisted. So journos align him to us. No inside knowledge, just a guess created by a journo who need to "fill copy".

We (supporters)take the bait and are disappear when we "miss out". Even though it is highly likely we (the Club) never went after him.

Modern "journalism" at it's finest......

Regardless on what our offer might look like I think that it is appropriate and good process that Barlow considers all his options before making a decision

It just depends on where the guys coming through are actually going to take us. Barlow might not be an improvement BUT allowing him to take one of the up and coming guys spots in the 22 could actually be a terrible decision.

I'm expecting that Pyke sees a plan, and uses ALL of the talent we have at our disposal.

Personally, I can't see a huge problem if we do or don't get Barlow. Either way, as long as Thommo does what VB did in 2016 and some of the talent steps up - we should improve. The difference in output including Barlow or not in 2017 won't be the "difference".

We have so many players that are 25 and under with huge potential, if I take the optimistic approach that we have the talent on our list already - then I can see us as a true top 4 contender in 2017.

??

Barlow is looking at a career ending contract he will shop for the longest term possible, if you think he will commit to anyone without shopping his services you are sadly mistaken, I suppose they could have offered a 4 year deal to blow the competition away, do you think that would have been wise though?

You're the same though with this. There is nothing in that quote from Thommo that indicates he's a starter. A player who knows he is on his last legs talking about what they offer outside of playing isn't exactly condusive of a best 22 player.

Then we'd be hearing about premierships and hoping to have a really successful 2017.

Surely you meant 'disappointed'? I'm not about to disappear just because we missed out on Barlow.:p

By many reports, we have gone after him though...

Media are like sheep. One guy makes it up, the rest follow.

The one thing to come out of our club since we failed to overpay for Gibbs is that we will build our midfield via organic growth.

Plugging in Barlow goes against that.

I doubt Barlow will end up with us. There are clubs out there that will offer him far more than we are prepared to. Id be surprised if we were offering him any more than 2 years and about $350k. I can see others offering him 3 or 4 years.
