What do you guys read into the last line "Don't try and be the best coach, try and be the coach of the best team"

Is he trying to say that he doesnt think that bucks has the right personality to coach? what i mean is that as a player he lead by example on field and off, as a coach you obviously cant do this...is bucks a good enough communicator to coach?

whether its too early in the morning i dont know , but i couldnt get what he meant by that lol

only things i had was dont coach a shit team like freo to prove you are the best coach

Gee, that's very tough to decipher. It was a very good article as a whole. But that line... not sure what it means. You could interpret it as Mick having a bit of a joke, saying that by coaching the best team, he may actually get to taste premiership success.

I think he means choose carefully when taking a coaching job on.

You could be the best coach in the world but if you don't have the cattle your coaching career will go down the shute.

Watch Michael Voss if he takes on the Gold Coast job. He'll last 3 years tops as they will battle big time.

True.Nights is the self proclaimed best coach, now he's floundering.
Michael Voss i perceive as a poor communicator. He also has a "shirty" attitude.
Buckley would be excellent. He's got the poise/calmness.

In my opinion, what Mick's telling Bucks is to make sure all the focus is on the team he's coaching.

Focus all your attention on creating the "best team". Teams win Flags.

Not making yourself the best coach. That comes once your "best team" wins the flag!

We have a winner.

Mick simply reminding Bucks to apply the leadership lessons he learned as captain when he takes up coaching.

How can people not see that?

I think he is saying "don't go out and try to be the coach with the trickiest tactics and constantly out-think yourself. Base your coaching on getting the players to be capable of doing what is required to win and drill them to do it."

Or....."Don't go choosing a crap club and trying to make a "silk purse" coach Collingwood."

No it just means don't be hard on yourself but as a coach focus on your team, not your own performance, as that is reflected in the team's performance.

Makes perfect sense. :thumbsu:

If he chooses to do an apprenticeship I am sure he will leave no stone unturned to be the best coach. But I might have a quiet word to him - don't try to be the best coach, Nathan, just try to be the coach of the best team.

Hmmm. I've just finished a 60 hour week, plus a Macroeconomics exam to boot, so I'm very very tired, and I could be way off, but to me it seems like he's just telling Nathan not to go and do an apprenticeship at another club, but to stay at (or rejoin) Collingwood.

I think he simply means that someone like Buckley doesn't need to do an apprenticeship.

But like I said, I'm sleep deprived, so if I'm clearly and embarrassingly wrong, go easy on me ok?

lol; you guys are reading way too much into it

basically, nathan's playing style was always trying to get the best out of himself as possible, he set standards like no other professional could..

as a coach, you dont focus on being the best yourself, all the focus is on your team..make THEM the best.

thats all....jesus
