Eddie was always underrated. He didn't just make opportunities for himself.

2009: 38 goals, equal 2nd in the league for goal assists.
2010: 42 goals, equal 1st in league goal assists.
2011: 50 goals, equal 5th in league goal assists.
2012: 48 goals, 5th in league goal assists.
2013: 27 goals, equal 7th in goal assists (2nd on assists per game).

nobody in the AFL would've had more goal assists than Eddie over the past 5 years.

been a bloody solid contributor - every small forward drifts in and out of games, close to the hardest position to keep a spot in.

Just FYI, Monfries almost never played in the midfield at Essendon.

I'm a big Monfries fan but Betts has him covered quite easily.

When Monfries corrected his kicking at goal in the second half of 2013, he became one of Ports best players each week (IMO). Constantly won 1 on 1 contests and was super reliable all over the ground, without being outstanding (except the 7 goal bag, a couple of hangers, a right angles goal and a Heath Shaw meltdown).

To be honest, I didn't see or hear much of Betts in 2013. I don't like to look at stats, so I won't. I certainly can't accurately guage a small forwards performance on GOALS, when the forward line doesn't really have a good tall, unlike PAFC...

To me, it's a strange comparison. Monfries spent time up forward, in the backline and with the mids in 2013...

You say this as if it's an advantage for a small forward to be playing in a forward line without a good tall forward to crumb from. It isn't.

Monfries is the better player comfortably. Betts is just another "meh" small forward who is inconsistent, Monfries is up there with best.

He's played 1 game in the midfield at Essendon. It was against the crows, but he barely played midfield

Aside from those Dons pointing out he wasn't really a midfielder, the only stat he covers Betts in is uncontested disposals. Nothing to write home about.
