A total of 41 delisted AFL players have nominated for Saturday’s National AFL Draft.

However only a handful are expected to find new homes on Saturday when the 16 AFL clubs will have between them a total of 83 draft selections.

The most surprising absentee from the list was former West Coast Eagles hardman Phillip Read, who now can only find a new club via the pre-season draft on 16 December.

Read is training with Melbourne, which has the first live pick in the pre-season draft after the Bulldogs’ decision to commit to Jade Rawlings while Carlton is committed to Port star Nick Stevens at pick two.

That leaves the Demons free to select Read at pick three if they choose to.

However had Read nominated for the national draft, it could have meant any of the 16 clubs selecting him at any stage of Saturday’s draft.

The other notable absentee from the list of nominations for the pre-season draft was former Bomber Shane Harvey, who is training with the Kangaroos in the hope of being selected by them in the pre-season draft where he would then be reunited with his brother Brent.

The most surprising nomination from a delisted player for Saturday’s national draft was from Brisbane’s Shane Morrison.

Morrison, who was only recently delisted by the Lions after asking to leave the club where he has managed only five games in two years, was expected to only nominate for the pre-season draft.

Richmond, which has pick four in the pre-season draft, is interested in the big centre half-forward but could now miss out on securing the former Lion.

That is because the Tigers only have one pick in the first 50 selections in the national draft on Saturday, meaning that Morrison could no longer be available by the time the Tigers have the bulk of their 11 selections.

With so many late picks on Saturday and with the depth of teenage talent thin in this year’s draft, the Tigers and Carlton are expected to be the clubs most likely to give a delisted player another chance in Saturday’s national draft.

The Tigers are interested in both former Magpie Rupert Betheras and ex-Blue Simon Fletcher while Carlton is a chance to select 1998 Adelaide premiership ruckman Ben Marsh.

Below is a list of the delisted players that have nominated for Saturday’s AFL draft.

Jordan Bannister (Essendon), Rupert Betheras (Collingwood), Craig Biddiscombe (Richmond), David Bourke (Kangaroos), Glen Bowyer (Hawthorn), Daniel Breese (Melbourne), Amon Buchanan (Sydney), Craig Callaghan (St Kilda), Che Cockatoo-Collins (Port Adelaide), Brent Colbert (Western Bulldogs), Rod Crowe (Kangaroos), Andrew Crowell (Adelaide), James Davies (Essendon), Marc Dragicevic (Richmond), Andrew Eccles (Carlton), Ben Finnin (Geelong), Simon Fletcher (Carlton), Rob Forster-Knight (Essendon), Scott Freeborn (Carlton), Brent Grgic (Geelong), Daniel Hunt (St Kilda), Anthony Jones (Fremantle), Paul Koulouriotis (Port Adelaide), Steve Lawrence (St Kilda), Glenn Manton (Carlton), Ben Marsh (Adelaide), Andrew Merrington (Carlton), Andrew Mills (Richmond), Shane Morrison (Brisbane Lions), Gary Moorcroft (Melbourne), Shannon Motlop (Kangaroos), Chris Oliver (St Kilda), Stephen Paxman (Port Adelaide), Jim Plunkett (Carlton), Aaron Rogers (Melbourne), Daniel Schell (Adelaide), Brad Seymour (Sydney), Daniel Sipthorp (Richmond), Dylan Smith (Kangaroos), Matthew Smith (Adelaide) and Jarad Wright (Brisbane Lions).

Looks fairly obvious now we will try to use our 4th round pick (#53) in the ND on getting Morrison (if he's still around) and first pick in the PSD (#4) on snatching Copeland hoping the Dees will pick up Read with pick 3. This way there's a chance we may either pick up or miss out on both of them whereas if both had nominated for the PSD we would have been assured of getting at least one of them. Hope Port aren't interested in Morrison as they have 5 picks  before our 53rd pick.

Sounds like Melbourne have made a commitment to Read in the PSD.

Fingers crossed.........

Getting Read would officially make our drafting sessions this off-season crap.

Totally agree with One-eyed Tiger. Read is a mistake.

No, I meant, reading between the lines, Melbourne seem to have committed to Read with pick 3 which hopefully leaves us free to secure Copeland.

I think the Swans were the other team besides Richmond to show interest in Morrison. Given that they missed out on Hall and know Richmond are interested, they will probably take Morrison with pick 45 to get in before us.
