Nathan Brown vs Ben Reid

Both top 10 picks from the 2006 draft by Collingwood (Reid @ 8, Brown @ 10). Both KPPs who took a while to cement their places in the senior team. Both look like holding down the key back positions for the better part of the next decade.

Which one will be the better player?

Am interested in the thoughts of neutrals as well as Pies supporters obviously. Got a feeling that neutrals might rate Brown higher while Pies supporters might prefer Reid.

Reid seems classier, smarter, lacks a bit of strength in comparison but can handle the big lads.
I don't think Brown's got *that* much more to come. He's been at the same level for 2-3 years basically.

Reids left foot will become a major attacking weapon. Browns kicking is a bit up and under

Brown has a hell of a lot to improve. He has to become a blanket defender like Presti in order to really cement himself IMO, because his attacking side isn't good enough. He's a better kick than Presti, but not really much smarter in terms of his actual ball use, the rare times he does get possessions. Reid will still be the better defender however, particularly as he continues to bulk up.

True. Unless his kicking/decision making improves, Browny needs to play more within his limitations. Too often he will grab it and just kick it as far as he can away from his area, showing that he lacks composure.
There is definately a place for a big, strong and fast lock down defender in the side but he should look to dish off to the better users of the ball.

Reid is a gun imo and will continue to improve over the next 3-4 years. Could easily become the best tall defender in the AFL in time.

Don't be so defensive. I kind of agree with Slattery_20. I wouldn't think Brown has that much room for improvement in him. Although, he doesn't need to be the next Scarlett. I'd be happy enough if he maintains a level near that of this year for the years to come.

For me Reid was already well and truly better this season, and has the potential to be one of the very best KP backs in the league.

He is a great size and extremely athletic. The only question marks for me initially was his strength one on one but I am far more convinced of that now.

Ben Reid for me. He has surpassed Brown with the season he has just had.

Reid will be a star - I firmly believe that he'll be AA CHB one day.

He has all the tools to be an excellent defender, plus he's a great kick and hurts teams offensively.

Brown was doing good jobs on good forwards from day 1. His improvement is those jobs becoming more common and his bad days becoming less common. That's a fair bit of improvement in itself imo.

In terms of physical and technical attributes he's pretty much there. His body work can, and should improve still though.

Reid will be the better player though. Amazing what a bit of confidence can do for players.

I personally don't think Brown had improved defensively at all. In fact I think he's gotten WORSE defensively. He was excellent in his first few jobs against some of the best forwards in the league. However since then he has shown a lack of agility and ability to stay with opposition particularly at ground level and a real tendancy to give away stupid free kicks.

As I said he has a lot to improve defensively, and to the person who said they would be happy if Brown were to simply maintain around about his level shown this year, if that were to happen, I would expect the club to look for a replacement. He was very good in the second Grand Final, but for much of the year when he did get a game, tended to be a liability.

Brown was very good for the latter part of the season. Rarely beaten.

Reid is, and will be the better player though. Pretty much has all the assets to be one of the best CHB's in the competition. His improvement from being beaten by O'Hailpin early in the season to his form later in the year was remarkable.
