Don't worry about it, but surely you'd agree he's improved?

Think back to the PF last year where an admittedly drug cheating Ben Cousins ran VB off his feet and set up the win for the Weagles in the second half compared to last night where he effectively nullified the form player of the competition:thumbsu:

I dont think thats an equal comparison - C Cornes is a great player but he hasnt got Cousin's engine. VB just got run off the park that day. Im not oging to continue to argue my opinion on VB...it's on the record and unpopular...so be it :)

He did play well though :thumbsu:

You forgot wrong :p

There were many times when VB was out numbered 3-1.
VB was still able to get to those contests and cause a ball-up or turnover.

On his ethic, footy brains, courage I can see how Craigy put him in our lineup straight away even when he was skinnier than douglas.

People continue to under-rate Shirley. He is what I would call an "ultimate role player" because he does what you ask and takes no backward step. He might have struggled a bit in the last couple of weeks leading into the Showdown but the games like last night are tailor made for players like Shirley.
Take him out of the side and you almost have a bunch of front runners who don't know how to get the hard ball consistently!

Agreed he had an excellent game .....but do you think he was dropped on the back of just 2 poor games .......I don't think so!

Still wet conditions and the way the game was to be played really suited Shirley.

Did Craig really say that Campbell had a poor defensive side to his game ???? ....and how do you come to that realization after seeing probably 30 SANFL games ....then pick him for his first AFL game and with limited gametime come to that conclusion?? .....mystifying

Van Berlo really does remind you of Bickley .......IMO he won't be a star much the same as Bickley wasn't .....but like Bickley I can see Van Berlo becoming the heart and soul of the team and always being counted on in the tough games. :thumbsu:

I think he said he couldn't play defense (back 6), rather than play defensively.

He did say that re Campbell WW, but he also did say that he hoped that Campbell would be given more chances at AFL level this year and that he should have a good career with the AFC. Craig certainly wasn't trying to be negative about him.

He stressed about 4 times to the thick journalist that Campbell was very clear about his omission this week.

Re Shirley - the official line from the club is that they couldn't see a match-up for him against Essendon which is why he was rested from the game - make of that what you will. :)

Ahhh, you're stealing my lines now WW. :D I've been saying exactly that since last year. :thumbsu:

If we're both right on this one, we'll be very happy - Bickley had a great career.

That's strange then ......I can imaging Campbells first game at Telstra he would have been in awe and star gazing ......not hard in the AFL for an opponent to take davnatage of that and slip him.

If it's a trait in his game surely that would have previously been identified at Norwood and he would not have been drafted .....I hardly think he was recruited for his attacking flair and forward line work.

Gee that's tough on the kid to label him on the back of one game.

On Shirley ....he's never been quick but IMO he has lost a yard and on the quick Telstra Dome that was alawys going to present issues.
Campbell who I believe has been recruited as a tagger (which makes the Craig comments all the more questionable) is quicker so hence why I believe he was picked

Absolutely right !

You build club cultures around that type of player

I reckon that's a cop out from Craigy. If he knew he wasn't going to play him against Port becuase of a perceived defensive weakness, why would you bring him in for his first game the week before the showdown. Wouldn't you wait until after the Port game.

Or why would you pick him at all ???.......surely he could not have arrived at that call after one limited game OR was it simply an excuse to get Shirley back in for a game more suited to him???

I'd suggest it is the latter and Campbell has had a taste and will get a second opportunity because he does have something to offer

There is a third option - that he might have been told things to work on during the game and he didn't deliver. We seriously missed a hand body in the midfield against Essendon.

Granted .....but could have some of that been "star gazing" in his first game?

He was picked up as a mature age recruit, star gazing is not an acceptable excuse in my book. Adjusting to the pace of the game yes, but star gazing at Peverill and Watson? He would be in trouble then if he counts them as stars.

If he was told during the game by the coaches and didn't do what was told then it may explain why he was dropped after the one game.

Most of this is guesswork on your and mine behalf though.

You forgot "obnoxious" in your name....

When VB can kick a goal from 30 meters out I'll say he's improved. :p

The immense power behind the swing of his foot means that it is harder for him to make shorter targets. Put him in the centre square and he would kick it left foot drop kick with one arm and a blindfold. ;)

VB was doing the round in the Shed and he'd been out for a few minutes when I randomly decided to get really rowdy and hold my banner up to get his attention.

Nah. I got acknowledgement. Considering VB can impregnate women with acknowledgement I reckon that's a pretty high honour.
