Smith said that the leadership group made the decision. They were part of it.There is no evidence that they were part of the group in the decision just yet.
We will wait and see.

Leadership group = Smith, Warner, Hazlewood, Starc and Lyon.
And extends to anyone else who was involved in the decision making process. I hope Lehmann and Warner, two of the least likeable cricketing men in recent history, shuffle out the door quietly and soon. Would help get us as a side back on track. It could've been any combination of those players who were actively involved. It was a deliberately vague statement.
The buck stops with the captain.

Hazlewood, Starc and Lyon are all going to be investigated, surely? Their punishment if/when proven guilty will be less severe, but they'll still rightfully miss some cricket.Lehmann will go. I can see Warner clinging on, although there has to be a point when the drama your 31 year old VC brings isn't worth the runs (which have been drying up lately anyway). Smith has to return at some stage, but whether that's to the captaincy will be another matter. Integrating him back into the dressing room will be an unenviable proposition for the new coach.
Hazlewood and Lyon haven't been mentioned at all and are rightly safe. You can't fire everyone purely by association.
Paine has played 100 first class matches.

I think Smith, Bancroft, and Warner should spend a year out of the side. A severe punishment, but a deserved one for cheating in such a wanton fashion. Smith will come back, Warner will have more to prove. Renshaw and whoever opens with him will have some clear air to establish a partnership.
Faf's offences were fairly common, and rightly or wrongly (its wrongly), are generally considered to be borderline part of the game.It doesn't look like it. Bancroft's been given demerits, Smith got a one-match ban. The rest will come from CA and they'll be keen to limit the damage. The last thing they'll want is to indict half the team.
If you look at the level of punishment traditionally handed out for ball tampering by the ICC and the respective cricket boards, a year is incredibly overzealous. Faf tampered twice and is still captain. Hell, Stokes beat the shit out of someone and missed one series.
Granted this was particularly galling given it came as a targeted strategy rather than a brain fade, but I can hardly see any of the culpable players spending a significant amount of time out of the game. The biggest effect this will have will be on the captaincy, given Smith seems bound to lose it. That then has a pretty significant knock on effect in the future and how he handles his reduced responsibility in the side.

The ICC doesn't know the full story, but more to the point is the policy that they can only punish what they see and that the captain is in charge and takes the blame.
CA has a responsibility to this country to do the right thing. I've never seen the country more united than today, its crazy. They will try and minimise the damage, yes, and I think part of that is to get Smith and Warner away from the team for a decent period of time as they conduct a review into how this culture was allowed to flourish. People like Henry Blofeld are calling for lifetimes bans, which is OTT and won't happen, but they need time away from the squad and the squad needs time away from them.

I completely disagree. Disgracing our country by cheating on the national stage deserves severe punishment. We need to send a strong message that it won’t be tolerated. They have been given a ridiculously amazing privilege of representing their country and they’ve wiped their asses with it.No offense meant to you, but the country is overreacting like crazy. The fact it's a leading story on every bulletin is absurd. It's a bad look and Smith in particular will suffer, but a ban from cricket for any significant length of time would be grossly out of proportion to what every country participating in the game has seemingly deemed tampering to be worth.

That's a very, very slippery slope. Using mints on the shiny side or digging fingernails into the rough is acceptable and just part of the game, but sandpapering is a straight up no go? All of these methods end up impacting the condition of the ball, so surely it's all ok or none of it is.
As I said, it all stops at the captain. He's the one who ostensibly had the power to call the whole thing off. Of course, a lot of people seem to think Smith is just a mouthpiece for Lehman, but ultimately he's the one with the responsibility to ensure shit like this doesn't happen.

Paine is a better bet at this stage to M Marsh
It's a surreal feeling.
Moises is the only viable candidate. He is ready to break out like Smith did. Just needs the backing
Break out into a rash of misjudgement?
