i was watching a game with some of my Canadian buddies (cant recall which game), and they were wondering why the jumpers were so similar... it's just common sense dude.
So the change is not for the players or the supporters (neither TV or at the game), but for overseas people who have never seen the game. Silly me, that is a common sense argument to change 100 years worth or tradition.

Not having clash jumpers has been one of the many things that has distinguished us from any other sport (American or English). If people from O/S watch long enough to understand some of the rules I'm pretty sure they will be able, like the rest of us, to differentiate between the two teams! Why pander to an overseas audience. If they like it, they should like it for what it is, not what we think they might like.

i don't see why it's a bad thing to have clubs in completely different colours when playing each other (one dark, one light/one red, one blue etc.)
It's a bad thing because it's NOT NEEDED. It's only for money, and that's not a good enough reason to mess with tradition.

This may be a minor issue to some. But think about it; not many competitions around the world are this old. Tradition is one of the most important things we have. And if used wisely tradition can be very marketable.

it won't be at the expense of the home jumper, which should be sacred, and only away teams should have to change their jumper.
Well, yes it would be at the expense of the home jumper (as you call it). Any game where the players wear an alternative strip, would be at the expense of the original ... it's just common sense dude.;)

The common sense is for clash jumpers. And they do have completely diffrent srtips in the English Prmeier League to avoid a clash. And when there is a clash like a couple of weeks ago when Aston villa and west ham played they came up with a diffrent jersey. You ever played a game of football mate if it looks bad for the audience imagine being out there in the midst of the action? Clash Jumpers are needed in my opinion

I think you need to read my post(s) in this thread a little more carefully.

Geelong were the first club to wear a Clash uniform.
1914 they wore Blue jumpers against Collingwood because they felt their new wider hoops looked too much like Collingwood's stripes.
When numbers came in, in 1912, Geelong wore Red numbers to help alleviate the problem with clashing with Collingwood.
In many games between 1914 and the 1920's, Geelong wore Red socks to avoid the Clash.

...and there goes noclashjumpers "you can't argue with tradition" argument. It's always been a problem.

I think someone's giving a bit of a selective history lesson!

And after 1920?

The fact is, up until the early to mid twenties most club jumpers were in a state of flux. But from then on (1921 for Geelong) the overwhelming bulk of clubs strips stayed the same (No more red socks!). Which is why I've said repeatedly in different ways "for the last 70 odd years".

And in that 70+ years there's been many an opportunity for supporters and players alike to voice their opposition. It's never happened. That is until the last 10 years when the AFL smelled a marketing opportunity.

I'm not sure I get the difficulty in understanding this. For 70+ years this was NOT raised. For traditional clubs this was NOT a problem!

So Barabbas, I'm not sure that 11 games (total) with red socks in 7 years, more than 80 years ago! messes with my argument. And given that the next 70+ years were relatively event free jumper wise, I guess it hasn't "....always been a problem" after all!:)

Maybe we should go all out and have a different jumper for every round. :thumbsu:

i think all clash jumpers are better of being predominantly white.
Fair enough. Just not a fan of clash jumpers at all. My name gives it away really!

If you like, have a read back though a couple of my posts in this thread to see what I'm on about.
