New Stadium

I think we can kiss the new stadium goodbye. I'm a soccer fan but the only reason I hoped we'd get a WC was that it would just about guarantee us a new stadium, I don't think it will happen now.
Barnett must be smiling now.

I was actually having an internal conflict over the decision myself, MadMac. Was it really going to be worth 12 years of soccer hysteria for a new stadium that they were probably going to bugger up anyway? This poster thinks 12 years of soccer hysteria would be a fate worse than death. Ergo, no.

I've convinced myself that whenever the WA Labor party gets completely fed up of losing elections that they'll try and buy back the electorate with the promise of a new stadium anyway. By which time the economy will hopefully be back to record rates of completely unsustainable economic growth, the shiny new Fiona Stanley Hospital will be operational and the shinier, newer kiddie's hospital in Subi will also be built to quell the calls that we need hospitals more than we need stadiums, plus everybody will be looking for something else to throw all of the money that the Pilbara earns into something which will not benefit the region from whence it came in the slightest.

Yup... ^ My thoughts exactly.

Belmont Park (if the racing people want to sell part or all of the land)

Burswood

East Perth Power Station (if we can build a big carpark on the opposite river bank near Belmont Park - access by pedestrian walkway under the rail bridge).

Even if these options are more exopensive than Subi. I think this will go ahead regardless of not winning the World Cup. We'll get a dedicated footy stadium instead of a convertable oval/rectangle.

Kev, I don't believe there would be any hysteria really, maybe few months after the announcement, until footy season starts anyway, and the maybe a year before the tournament. In between, most people would just concentrate on other things, like Freo winning its maiden premiership ;).
The way construction is going in WA, we'll be lucky to have a stadium before 2025, WC would've spead up the process by few years and Federal Government would surely chip in with regards to a cost.

I think a flexible new stadium would be a better option. And I'm not necessarrilly talking about hosting soccer matches, but blockbuster rugby, cricket etc events. There are lot of people in WA who follow other sports and they all pay taxes, brother. Patch up jobs on the 3 current stadiums over the next 20 years would just about cover the new multipurpose stadium. And patch up jobs are shit, just have a look at Subi and Perth Oval.

If and when WA gets a new stadium, the NEW Dockers will abandon Fremantle oval and be co hosts with the WCE.
Don't believe me??? Rosich has already stated that the Dockers have out grown the current building.

NEW jumper....
NEW song.....
NEW home.....
Fremantle will be dropped to appeal to a greater audience.... NEW name.... Dockers

No I don't.

Besides being obviously melodramatic how would it even work on a practical level? Are we going to draw straws to see who can train there on which days?

No two teams in the league share training headquarters.

Rosich has already stated that the Dockers have out grown the current building.

Which is why plans are in place to expand our Freo Oval headquarters in conjunction with South Freo.

Did you get this hysterical every time Claremont changed their jumper?

The way you Chicken Littles carry on you'd think we were the first team to ever change our jumper. It seems to be lost on you guys that history shows nearly every team in nearly every league change their jumpers at some stage early on in their history before settling on their final look.

The Kangaroos dropped North Melbourne from their name to appeal to a greater audience.
The Western bulldogs dropped Footscray from their name to appeal to a greater audience.
Claremont is 90% WCE supporters so I rarely go or care any more.

.

For the first 7 years of our existence, South Fremantle FC hated us, did everything possible to make life as miserable for FFC as they could. I guess the financial benefits for SFFC has soften their hate for us but a new deal with a new stadium would see "The Dockers" bail in a heart beat.

The "DOCKERS" regularly train at Subi oval already and hold closed session there, so whats the problem.

Of course we do - once a week or so - because it's our home ground.

And I imagine it will be the same at the new ground - but do you really equate that to trying to share a full time training facility with our most bitter rivals at the same ground. Really? Really?

Do I really need to debate this point? I would have thought it would have been blindingly f**king obvious why we would never share the same training facility with our closest rivals.

Yes us foundation supporters (and many knowledgeable newcomers) know all about the friction between Souths and Easts upon our start-up. But we've moved beyond that, so maybe it's time you did too.

I could say that people like you remind me of old Europeans who try to hold on to their ethnic rivalries in our new country. But that would be completely hyperbolic - just like your claims...

Ok I'm really getting sick of this hysterical bullshit.

Carlton changed their original jumper... twice.
Hawthorn changed their original jumper.
Melbourne changed their jumper... three times.
Richmond changed their original jumper

As did every single club except Essendon, in one form or another.

But none of these teams suddenly dropped their team name.

But yes, let's ignore the overwhelming historical evidence and pick out two teams who've struggled for members and money and have gone to desperate lengths to attract members in a crowded market.

Because they're the two team that we relate most to aren't they...?

Good post Esti. I'm sick of these people thinking this jumper change is some kind of horrible abandonment of history/culture.

We have been in the comp for 15 years. Just for some visual aids to the above post:

Melb for first 18 years:

Melbourne-1.gif

Melbourne took 38 years to get to their basic jumper and had several more changes from the one above.

Carlton for the first dozen or so years:

Carlton-1.gif

Hawthorn for the first 25 years or so was some variation of this:

Hawthorn-3.gif

It took Fitzroy about 50-60 years to get to the basic version of their final strip. Richmond had vertical and horizontal stripe versions. I could go on.

Some of you should get some perspective.

Then you have the WAFL teams - this is just off the top of my head -

Perth used to be the Rovers, redlegs, the city reds, now they are the Demons. East freo was old easts, have had many strips. West Perth falcons were the Cardinals. Subi were the Maroons. Claremont have had v's and sashes, and the CFC emblem.

There are probably more name changes and strip changes if I had the time to look it up.

They probably are - relatively unsuccessful over the years, the minnow in their home market.

Except they're minnows in a dangerously overcrowded market where clubs have already gone to the wall.

We're about as 'minnow' as Pepsi.

Has worked so well for them that the Roos have gone back to being called North Melbourne ..so Claremont only have 10 supporters that aren't WCE members! :p ..Burswood is the ONLY decent option for a new stadium in this city end of story!

Logical examples like this dosent seem to translate to some of the wowser brigade...

**** me, this thread got derailed.
Anyway, Mark Duffield wrote a comment [a very good one] in todays Worst fregarding the new stadium. CBF looking up the online version, not sure if the published it there. But just as I expected, as soon as WC bid shat itself, Barnett and his cronies pretty much scaled down the size and upped the timeframe.

Lovely.
