The Alabama Senate has voted to allow a church to form its own police force.

Lawmakers on Tuesday voted 24-4 to allow Briarwood Presbyterian church in Birmingham to establish a law enforcement department.

The church says it needs its own police officers to keep its school as well as its more than 4,000 person congregation safe.

Critics of the bill argue that a police department that reports to church officials could be used to cover up crimes.

The state has given a few private universities the authority to have a police force, but never a church or non-school entity.

Police experts have said such a police department would be unprecedented in the US.

A similar bill is also scheduled to be debated in the House on Tuesday.
Sharia Law anyone?

Massachusetts May Toss Thousands Of Convictions For Drug Test Fraud

In the largest-ever case of its type, Dookhan pleaded guilty to more than two dozen counts of tampering with drug samples, falsifying lab reports, and misleading investigators during the nine years she worked at a drug-testing lab run by the state’s Department of Public Health.

In some cases, Dookhan apparently did no actual testing, but still issued reports that samples submitted by police or prosecutors in fact contained controlled substances. In some cases, Dookhan signed reports not only for herself, but for other staffers who were supposed to supervise or confirm her work. Contrary to lab rules, she also took calls from police, who told her what drug they expected would be found in the samples they had sent her.

Massachusetts Throws Out More Than 21,000 Convictions In Drug Testing Scandal

Massachusetts formally dropped more than 21,000 tainted drug convictions Thursday that were linked to a disgraced state chemist who in 2013 admitted to faking test results.

It's the largest single dismissal of convictions in U.S. history, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Thursday's dismissals by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court had been expected after several district attorneys on Tuesday submitted lists of 21,587 cases they said they would be unwilling or unable to prosecute, The Associated Press reports.

In what world is that even remotely similar to Sharia Law.

It is not even in the same universe
A religious police force is a good idea now?

Let's look at how they can abuse this. First and foremost, they can (and undoubtedly will) make sure the employees are religious themselves.

Secondly, religious zealots will flock to these roles. Exactly the types you don't want lording it over any population.

This is as bad as letting the ultra-orthodox Jews in New York police themselves: cover-ups of sexual abuse of children are the norm.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/may/08/irish-beach-washed-away-reappears-freak-tide
An Irish beach that disappeared more than 30 years ago has returned to an island off the County Mayo coast.

The sand at Dooagh, Achill Island, was washed away by storms in 1984, leaving only rocks and rock pools.

But after a freak tide around Easter this year, hundreds of tonnes of sand were deposited around the area where the beach once stood, recreating the old 300-metre stretch of golden sand.

Sean Molloy, manager at Achill Tourism, said local people were delighted to have the beach back.

Recalling the events of 1984, he said: “Some big storms destroyed the beach. It was completely washed away and 1984 was the last time the beach was there.

“Then in April we had that cold snap over Easter and the wind was coming from the north. It was steady and must have transported sand in from elsewhere.”
There's bit of a Father Ted vibe to this story.

The outgoing governor of Jakarta has been jailed for two years for blasphemy after judges handed down a sentence that was harsher than expected.

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, also known as Ahok, was accused of insulting Islam by referring to a verse in the Koran in a campaign speech last year.

Mr Purnama, a Christian in Muslim-majority Indonesia, has denied blasphemy and plans to appeal.

Looks like the nutbags are getting rowdy again.....hopefully they keep the murders and assaults on minorities to a minimum.

Alan Jones copped a cream pie to the face yesterday at a speech.

Assailant was hiding behind the curtains (great security) and was arrested and charged by police after being apprehended by security.

The assailant claims he didn't know it would be an assault.

You twit. I dislike Joyce but I don't condone assaulting him.

“My family are outraged, my wife is at my throat. I didn’t understand that I’ve breached the state’s criminal code and the police are dealing with it, so clearly I regret that.”

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2...e-sponsorship-deals-over-drugs-charges-report
The Cronulla Sharks and Sydney Roosters, two NRL clubs whose players and officials have been charged with possession of cocaine, have reportedly paid a hefty financial price after a major sponsor pulled out of commercial deals.

News Corp Australia has reported that Infinity Group Australia, a financial advice provider, has informed both clubs it will no longer sponsor them after their employees were allegedly found in possession of the drug last weekend.
City boys taking the moral high ground over a bit of blow. Spare me!
