Ok, it's pretty obvious Roo's job is perhaps the safest in the AFL's as long as he wants it he's got it but who will replace him. The current VC is Hart who although would be a great captain selecting him is not really looking into the future and the DVC's are McLeod? and Goodwin. McLeod is too media shy to really do the job and Goodwin would be good but is also getting a bit old. Recent players mentioned in regards to the captaincy have been Brett Burton and James Begley however Brett Burton in my humble Opinion his disposal is a huge liability and this would not set a good example for ANY player to follow and Begley i think is a good young player but he is having enough trouble keeping his spot in the team without the extra burdency of captaincy. And of course Stenglein who has jumped ship.

So my question is who should be groomed for the captaincy? My personal thoughts are:
Ken McGregor
Graham Johncock
Feel free to add or take any names but just reading through our list you can't really see many players even capable of DVC

From an outsiders point of view, id like to see mcgregor get it, nothing better than watching a teams captain dominate a game from CHB, inspiring stuff!

Mcgregors looks like he could be an awesome player in the future so he would be my pick.

It is probable the Scott Thompson could establish himself as a firm candidate by the time Ricciuto is ready to hand it over...

Think Kenny would be a great captain in a couple of years time, Johncock and Hentschell to fill the other two spots. Trent is probably still finding his feet and a little quiet but again given a couple of years could be a great Vice Captain. Perhaps Ian Perrie could be in the mix too, a little bit of responsibility may bring out his best more often.

Columbo i hope that was a joke Re: Perrie Captain. I will personally burn down Footy park (I refuse to call it AAMi Stadium) If when Roo steps down he has a posistion in the side james Fantasia will be the biggest failure since the Titancic

The only person I'd add is Brent, I think he could be a great leader by example, ala Roo.

Good point and this may entice the lad to stay in SA instead of going home in about 4 or 5 years. I mean not make him assistant or vice, but out right captain.

Jesus alzheimers hit me already...who the FFFF is Brent????????

Brett or Trent?

The scary thing is that I dont see any viable long term candidate :(
Brent Reilly.

I'm telling you Pavlich comes out of contract in about 3 years time, Just about the right time Roo will be ready to give it over.

Pavlich then will be ready to come as he has stated & with this we offer him the Captaincy if he returns back to SA. Easy as that!

Pavlich next Crow Captain!! :D

I agree. Everything I keep hearing about Thommo is impressive especially his leadership qualities.

I would also add Reilly and Watts to the leadership group. Both have good leadership qualities both on and off the field. Watts in particular can be inspirational with his no fear approach to contests.

As much as I am a big Kenny McGregor fan I think he is too introvert to be a captain.

I would consider moving Kenny up to be part of the leadership group as of next year as he will be a key to our future. As to whether who will replace Roo as captain, fortunately we have a few years to decide, as there is no standout at the moment.

I agree. Either Reilly, Watts or Thompson, someone who puts their body on the line. Mind you, i'm not saying kenny doesn't, he's just too quiet.

Does Ben Rutten have any leadership skills? Other than that, probably Brent Reilly or Trent Hentschel if he gets a bit louder.

My first thought was Ken McGregor.
He has the courage to lead by example.

Then I wondered whether Biglands might be savvy enough by the time Roo hands in the baton....no Ill stick with Kenny.

Stiffy could be groomed but Im not sure if hed be overlooked.

now that stinger has gone u will need to find someone. Roo is not to leave just yetso u have time to groom someone to the role

Someone will step up and take the captaincy role after Brownlow medallist mark Ricciuto.

Roo was not really looked upon AFL captain material during the Robert Shaw days and now he is the AFL AA captain. Give the players we have on the list now Two to Four years under a different tutorage, Neil Craig and see who may develop the leadership quality we want for the role as captain.

I would rather give it to a experienced campainer maybe edwards and then give it to someone like reilly watts johncock
By the time Roo is ready to move on, Edwards won't be far behind him.

If Burton is EVER captain of this football club.....I'll hand in my beanie

but moving on..

I think Johncock and Begley are the 2 most likely suspects at this stage.
Kenny is a bit quiet - he's always going to be a worker - not a captain.
I've been impressed with Reilly when he has spoken and would be happy to see him in the mix. Roo will play for at least another 3 years - which will see the end of Maaca and Edwards (or there abouts) - so I'd be looking to Goody/Stiffy/Beggs/Reilly.
ps - a lot can happen in 3 or 4 years personnel wise.....Bock could have 3 yellow jackets in the cupboard by then and be a certainty
