Next Few Drafts will Focus on KPP

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Well with the last 3 Drafts Focusing on Mids and Rucks and only draft 3 KPP(1 De-Listed,1 Mature age and 1 in the Rookie Draft) so since the 2006 Draft where we got Reid,Brown and Dawes but we don't really any other Young KPP Prospects.

Yes I know the draft coming up for Comprised but still think we can get some Good KPP Prospects

while i take your point Hine does seem to do a "theme" each draft i think those days are over now. he has built his list and it is well balanced now so will be all about succession planning and best available.

I'm fairly sure (nb. very sure) the decision of where to focus in 2010 hasn't been made yet, only 2 players are locked in already for rookie picks and the rest will have to wait, and also see what trades for draft picks are on offer from GC17.

One is with Cribben but Young could go on the Senior List

Anyway, we shot our load on KP's over the 04/05/06 drafts (Cloke O'Brien Rusling Anthony N Brown Reid Dawes)

Until we see how Rusling, Dawes and Reid turn out I don't see any great urgency, the days of more than 2 really big talls in either the forwardline or backline seem to be gone.

Thanks for a Proper Post,

Got a Point the day of the 195+cm KPP seems to be over they seem to be more 187cm to 193cm these days

From the perspective of our rookie list, it doesn't matter whether he does or doesn't. If he goes on the senior list, he doesn't take up a rookie spot, but if he goes on the rookie list, he's "outside" the rookie list for his first year anyway.

I think our biggest need in the next draft will be for a small forward, actually. If we can get a Cyril Rioli *type* in the 2010 draft with our first pick I'd be happy with that.

I agree with you in principal TD but there is always room for improvement on a list and there are some other areas I can see a need in. We could be interested in a FP, outside mid or BP in addition to KPP IMO. I think we intend on developing Shae as a KPF, with Witts as a ruckman coming next year. We got Carter this draft for KPB and Young seems to fit this bill as well. I'm with TRS, a forward pocket would be up there on a needs basis with KPP. Really, alot will depend on where Hine sees the quality in the draft next year. On appearance we needed KPP this year with our later picks but Hine didn't rate them so he didn't pick them.

I tend to agree.

If the right kpp comes along depending on list changes next season we will definately be looking into them.

But with the new teams starting up and compromised drafts I doubt there will be many quality kpp's so I expect we would be more likely to get a: forward pocket, half forward flanker, outside mid, back pocket. So more specialist positions which might be easier to come accross and to further increase our team symmetry . There will only be 3-5 list changes at the end of the year I expect so expect our draft to look something like this.

Tom Young looks like the ideal key position back alternative to Reid/ Brown at this stage and all indications are that we will take him next season. Also Nick Perry could be a key position forward prospect also from the NSW/ACT list if Dawes doesn't develop and Rusling gets hit by injury again. So all indications are that our future is bright and that next year no matter where we place we will still be able to bring in more quality prospects and more players who potentially could increase our team symmetry.

Well with our 1st 2 Picks IF there in the Top 50 you could get or 2 descent ones

NSW would have a few in the next years Draft anyway with Perry,Young and Witts

Not sure if either Perry or Young will end up as a key position player at either end, maybe more as a third tall type.

Nick has amazing athletic attributes (at least he did before his knee injury). He may be tried more as a running half back or wingman.

Yeah, inclined to agree but I do think Tom Young potentially has KPD capabilities. Perry; I think you're spot on, wing would be perfect for him.

Witts is the one for whom KPF would be the obvious choice, and we'd be hoping he could at least rotate in the ruck.

I would see Witts being more of a ruckman who can rest / rotate forward. I know it is similar to what you are saying, Sampler, but I guess what I am saying is that I wouldn't hold my breathe that he could be the answer to our key forward succession because I think he will ultmately turn into a ruckman.

Not that I have seen him play or seen anything other than what is written in this forum... Just that I can't recall too many dominant forwards (or any other position for that matter) that are over 200cm, and I don't expect the first one to be some kid who we have plucked from NSW with rookie pick 702.

It may well be that he will ultimately turn into a ruckman, but the likelihood is that unless he can add another string to his bow early in his development, he won't make it. He's not going to step in and play ruck at AFL level, so much like we've been doing playing Keeffe down back, Witts will learn the ropes up forward IMHO. Key forward is a much easier position to learn than ruck, the direction in which to run should be much more easily understood. He shouldn't be expected to be an answer to our "key forward succession", because the odds are long to begin with, but he could certainly play a role and present a matchup nightmare while getting a solid run at the rucking duties inside 50.

Also, it's probably a bit much to label him "rookie pick 702". While I know you're just exaggerating for comic effect, which I'm all for, we'll never know where he would have been taken because we have these delicious (thanks Bruce) exclusive drafting rights to him. :p

I agree, he will need to develop a key forward string to his bow - no question. My argument is that his selection shouldn't preclude us from selecting a key forward in a "needs-based" drafting strategy.

I also agree that his selection number will not be a true indication of his market worth due to our exclusivity on him, but I would suggest that kids who didn't make the NSW Rams side in their underage year, and are no certainty to make it in their senior year, would not likely be regarded too highly in a free draft market.

The point i don't necessarily agree on is that the key forward role is easier to learn idea. That doesn't seem to make sense to me. History has shown us that talented tall youngsters from other sports have traditionally either played ruck or key back (where they can just follow a man around). Many an expert has also suggested that CHF is the hardest position to play on the football field.

To play CHF he'd have to come in and displace Travis Cloke. I just can't see that happening. He'd play a tall forward pocket and rotate in the ruck, at a guess.
