Opinion NMFC Board Cricket Thread III

I was so confused as to who was bowling those off spinners. Had no idea he can bowl both off spin and medium pacers. Nearly backed up his wicket with a caught and bowled too, he must be a pretty good athlete because he moves like a gazelle.

Kmart Sobers.

In all seriousness, it’ll be handy having a bloke batting at 7 who bowls medium pace and spin.

The weird thing is how long it’s taken us to give him a run. Looks the complete cricketer to me
Speaking about weird selection decisions... Cooper Connolly.

I don't wish bad thoughts on him and I hope his selection is eventually vindicated but it is strange that he has got a test without having the track record to warrant it when others seem to have done the work over a long enough period but were still overlooked.

Fair enough that an opening has to exist and some decent players unfortunately overlapped with incumbents or others who seized the opportunity ahead of them but Connolly seems to either be an overreaction by the selectors or they disrespect the Sri Lankan team so much that they decided to throw him in because they thought it might work.

It will be interesting to see when he gets another opportunity at test level.

Was wondering similar re Connolly. Reminded me a bit of Steve Smith original selection though. Was brought in as a leg spinner wasn’t he. I don’t recall him having a huge FC reputation either. That turned out all right.

There is a bit of history in Australia in picking guys with minimal first class experience:

Cummins - 3
Konstas - 6
Warner - 11
Lyon - 5
Healy - 7
Renshaw - 12

Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

Has a player ever been selected as a bowler before having never taken a first class wicket? Connolly may have a decent Test career ahead but his selection for this Test seemed odd.

BTW - blatant celebrappealing for LBWs should be an automatic no ball and not out. Hate it.
Not out because the bowler didn't appeal correctly is the most cricket opinion ever.

NB: It only takes one member of the bowling team to ask the question for it to be a valid appeal.

Had a good Big Bash, only a few games less than konstas though… but yes, should have only really been part of the touring party

I think the way they'll put it in the rule book will be: "the ball will be ajudged not out if the bowler appeals like a dumb campaigner".

Then, to even it out, theyll allow the fielding team to review that decision, with a panel of judges scoring the appeal out of 10.

i havent' watched any of the WA v SA game, are they playing on a covered pitch? or is this some sort of centenary tribute?

Potential line-up for The Ashes:

Khawaja
Konstas
Smith
Green
Head
Webster/Inglis
Carey
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood

Boland to play at least two tests.

Usman is still a worry for me. His footwork in the BGT was terrible and Bumrah was trapping him on the crease a lot. Great innings in Sri Lanka, but there will be faster pitches and bowlers to deal with in The Ashes.

Konstas is still largely unknown and unproven. Every genuine opener in the country should be absolutely focused on the second half of the Shield and getting a County contract if they can. There is an opportunity for someone like Renshaw if they can take it.

Carey/Inglis.

You cant drop webster who will likely get the duke to swing. Good pinch hit bowler in England and makes runs.

All good points, if The Ashes was in England. They are in Australia next summer.

I kind of agree on Webster. 900 runs and 35 wickets in a Shield season suggest he is a serious cricketer.

Half the WA team has money on McAndrew making the next Aust squad

Warnie only play 6-7 first class games as well

They could have picked Renshaw (or Harris or Bancroft) when Warner retired. They farted around with Smith.
They could have picked Renshaw (or Harris or Bancroft) when they gave up on Smith opening. They farted around with McSweeney even though he'd never opened before.
They could have picked Renshaw (or Harris or Bancroft) when McSweeney failed. They gave a 19yo a go instead.

Renshaw (Harris and Bancroft) are done. Put a fork in them. They're done.

Be careful what you say - there's a reasonable chance that your father is Dennis Lillee.
Let’s be honest, if you were born on the 70’s/80’s your dad IS Dennis Lillee

Renshaw is still younger than Hayden was when he started his second stint in the Australian team He needs to start putting more consistent scores on the board, rather than playing the odd great innings.
