Preview No Changes vs Saints

Stop tarring everyone with the same brush. Many posters myself included have merely asked for judgment to be reserved pending players getting enough of a go to make a proper judgment.

You make bald statements based on no information and sometimes you are lucky enough to be correct.

Yes we like shiny toys, because they are shiny and yet to be tarnished. All toys deserve a go without being discareded whilst still in the packet.
How many games is "enough". In Petrenko's case, he'd played about 30 by the time I made up my mind. To that date he'd shown precisely nothing, yet still managed to achieve a massive reputation on BigFooty.

Really hoping for an early return from Lynch. I think we are missing him more than we know. I miss some of those 50 metre goals of his.

Ch10 suggested he was a reasonable chance to play SANFL this week. He'll need to, his pre season was very interrupted

Give us a break. 'Massive reputation'? I don't recall anyone saying the guy was a gun in the making. At most, people said he had something to offer but was far from a complete player. Anyone who talked him up more than this was definitely in the minority. FWIW I still think his best game was in the back lines and I'm completely baffled why he hasn't been given a run in the back pocket. That said, I'm perfectly happy with the current small defenders so that ship has probably sailed.

B: Laird Rutten Hartigan
HB: Reilly Talia Jaensch
C: Smith Thompson Sloane
HF: Douglas Jenkins Grigg
F: Betts Podsiadly Kerridge
R: Jacobs Dangerfield Wright
I: Brown Mackay M. Crouch CEY
Emg: Lyons Johnston McKernan

I don't think you can really blame people for wanting LJ in the side when the Crows forward line was stinking it up and he'd been kicking bags of goals in the SANFL.

Also who around here ever rated McKernan?

Petrenko had a purple patch at the start of 2012 and went back to stinking so I'd say your on the money with that one.
Me :)

People over rate kicking ....would have thought getting the ball first was more important

Speaking of McKernan, is he expected to play this week? He was out with "concussion" against the Swans but I haven't seen him on any official injury lists.
Reckon McKernan will be back in .....we missed that 3rd tall last week

Over rate kicking"...... Of course winning your own pill is important however good use is also as important

Hawthorn most certainly don't over rate kicking, there side is full of elite users of the footy and it would be interesting to compare their scores against from turn overs compared to us

How nice would this be. Ins:

plus a fully fit Dangerfield (with some protection) and Thompson.
Plus a direct, logical game plan.

Can't wait for a full side sometime this season hopefully! So much quality out of the side atm :(

Not arguing the turnover scenario ....can't kick can't play

BUT can kick but can't get ball is worse

Our turnover rate is more about Sando's gameplan ......it's HIGH RISK for experienced players NOT inexperienced players

People forget we lost him for 2 games. He is important to our structure regardless of what people think of him.

Both Pods and JJ were good lead ups last week but turned around to see only Betts and Petrenko.

This ! .....both are similar players and were good as leadups

Our structure suffered for not having a stay at home FF, and McKernan plays the most similar to Tippett in that his game suits the escape ball to the top of the square.
Forget who's better ....we structure up better with a McKernan type player

Seen the article about Gold Coast and the comparison to Hawks and the focus on elite kicking? IMO kicking skills has been a weakness of ours for far too long.

Kicking can never be overrated. Never. Can't be done.

You can point to thousands of examples, but one of the best I can think of is a portly man called S. Dew on Grand Final day in 2008 - because the excellence of his boot outweighed even the fact he'd spent most of the preceding two years at the buffet.

Elite kicking is a weapon of epic proportions, especially in September.

For a team that has just conceded a world record number of turn over goals then I would have thought we would worship the kicking gods

Funny you say Elite kicking and September in the same sentence.

Tex kicked two incredible clutch goals at 3/4 time against Dockers and HT against Hawks after the siren in 2012. :(

FYI - These were not easy kicks importantly in keeping with the topic of conversation of elite kicking.

Agree on McKernan.

Disagree on kicking.

How many goals have we given up because of poor disposal?

Turnovers are game killers!

Petrenko miss when we were just 8 point down.:(

Not sure if any of you saw 360 tonight, they showed this incredible goal were Rioli took a brilliant mark in about the same kind of position that Pets took his, played on and kicked an amazing goal.

I kinda wondered if Pets was watching Friday night football last week.

To be fair, his "massive" reputation only relates to the 1 thing he is good at.

Other wise I don't know many who still want him in the team.

at this stage I'm just hoping Kerridge and Grigg can stay in the side.

The Kedge especially is cementing a spot, would hate for him to have to miss over something stupid like a poke in the eye.

What I want to know, is who has been working with Kerridge on his field kicking in the off season. Because whoever it was, needs to teach basically everybody else on our list how to kick too. The improvement has been massive.

Really hoping for an early return from Lynch. I think we are missing him more than we know. I miss some of those 50 metre goals of his.

What we're missing even more, is somebody who runs their guts out to constantly present a target in the offensive 50-70m region, where we seem to constantly be falling over at the moment.

I mentioned earlier when I went to the Showdown, I saw literally no player lead into space in front of goal in the corridor whenever our player had possession this continued for the entire game.

I am really worried about Sundays game, Saints are a fast team so its going to make things interesting as I dont think we are an overly fast side esp at the Dome where speed is required.

The Saints came out earlier this year and said they wont be contesting for a flag till 2020, which made me think, wtf happens if or when we lose to them on Sunday.

Lineup

Brown--Rutten--Hartigan
Jaesnch--Talia--Laird
Smith--Kerridge--Sloane
Mackay--Pods--Grigg
Betts--JJ--Cameron
1R: Jacobs--Dangerfield--Douglas
Bench: Wright-M.Crouch-CEY-Sub: Atkins

So that makes it
In: Cameron, Atkins, CEY,
Outs: Reilly, Petrenko, Thompson.

CEY is a straight swap for Reilly, main reason being age and i'm for the mini rebuild.
Atkins is for Thompson, now whilst this is a questionable decision seeing i'm going in with one "inside only" player, Atkins has a classy disposal. Time to get games in him.
Cameron for Petrenko: One has a chance for a decent career at AFL level... That man is not named Petrenko.

15 touches and 2 goals is winning the game off your own boot now? There's a difference between kicking the winning goal and winning the game off your own boot.

In 72 (and counting) AFL games, predominantly played as a forward, Pets has never kicked 4 goals in a game and has kicked 3 once. He's never shown the remotest ability to win a game off his own boot.

He was never in the side to be the leading target and kick a bag of goals. This is the frustrating thing about discussions regarding Petrenko.

The only time he was established in our side was in 2012. We had the 2nd highest scoring team in the land. We had Walker kicking 63 goals and Tippett / Callinan chipping in with 40 each. We had Porps spending 60% of his time up forward and he contributed 30 goals. With that forward line we had more than enough goalkicking power - we needed a player a defensive forward. Someone whose job was to chase, tackle, harass, block, smoth, etc. He performed this very well and correctly was best 22 in 2012.

Unfortunately for us we have had absolutely nothing that even closely resembles a forward line since the end of 2012. There is no room for a defensive forward if you can't kick goals.

For me - Petrenko is worth keeping on the list for 2014, but would prefer not to play more than 10 games of AFL footy.

We should be building towards a 2015 forward line of:

Resting Mid / Smack / Lynch
Petrenko / Walker / Betts.
