Well the Club has known to Stretch the truth about player though they can have some truth to it but then can say that they are doing better then they really are.

Looked at Beams, if he was killing it in the Practise Matches then why is he not Playing?

Maybe the club wants to unveil the kids here in Victoria in front of a sizeable and more "pie friendly" crowd?

Who knows?

Maybe it's as simple as they are not quite ready?
Maybe it's as simple as they might have a nigggle?

Must trust the coaching staff.

Still hanging to watch though!

GO PIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to give the fringe players a chance to show their stuff ahead of recent draftees at this point in time.

Though they could've friggin played Macaffer, but he will get his chance.

Was starting to think that but I was thinking they don't want to Travel to Alice Springs for the NAB Challange game for the Loser

Not only heard it from the club themselves, but people in and around the club.

Don't think we took many Fringe Players,

Those good point with Macaffer espically with Medders out, who will play medders role?

Cook, Stanley, Reid, Wood, Cox, Johnson, Wellingham were all on the fringe of selection last year at times.

Add Leigh Brown and Corrie to that.

Tonight we see if Reid looks like a CHB, Dawes looks like a forward, Wellingham can find the footy, Wood has improved and so on.

Plenty of reasons to watch tonight.

I hear you Dave. That could be the reason too. Not wanting too many kids on the park at any given time.

A mix of experience, new recruits and some of the debutants from last year.

I think by not playing the kids, this shows how serious they are about not wanting to go to Alice Springs.

Fair Enough but also have alot of 1st Teamers and Intresting to see that you said Dawes is not a Fringe Player.

I am looking forward to see the improvements in both Wood and Dawes:thumbsu:

What a joke. It was the main reason I was looking forward to it. So angry...

I'll still watch it because it's footy, and it's Collingwood... but not happy.

I left Dawes out haha.

All we need to see from Dawes right now is him taking a couple of marks and hitting a few packs as Anthony still has this year to play out. Any improvement is welcome especially if it puts pressure on Rusling and Anthony.

Disappointed these guys miss out, but am looking forward to seeing guys like Dawes, Reid, Stanley, Wood and Anthony in action.

Would of preferred a young guy to be given a chance over L.Brown, who from reports has been beaten by pretty much every one he has played on in the practice matches and match simulations.

Think its pretty clear why they have done this, and that is with the way we started the H & A season last year (3-4), it appears they want better form going into the first part of the year.

After all, we missed out on top 4 by one game last year, and with the relatively easy draw we have in the first 6-7 rounds, 3-4 would be a disaster of a start.

I too wanted to see Beams and Sidebottom play, but after tonight it will be 3 weeks till our next "official" game, so the decision has some sense to it.

And, younger players seem to fade later in the season, so maybe they are considering this also.

One thing, we better bloody win now, thats the best team we can put on the park.

It's also going to be quite warm this evening? Perhaps it's best to ease the young less conditioned players into it. Initially I was disappointed, but now i don't mind as much. I want to see us play next week, and let's face it, i reckon we're going to see a lot of these boys eventually.

We don't play for another 3 weeks after this game but there will be Practise Matches to go to

Your post isn't even remotely close to being accurate. Malty has over the journey placed no importance on pre season matches and we get to see our youngsters on show almost always, and thats why we get bundled out first round most of the time. If we've gone in with a best team available policy then it's the first time in ages it's happened.

Not even remotely close? What about the bit where I talk about my own disappointment? And my lack of suprise? And the fact that I have made this comment before? They are all accurate.

In terms of MM not playing first years, McCarthy was overlooked when he had good training and intraclub form. As was Martin Clarke in the NAB cup game after getting 21 possies against the Swans the week before. Ben Reid didn't play in his first NAB cup game. I can't remember the 06 NAB Cup, but Brown was the only first year player in the 07 NAB Cup from his draft year, no first year player played in the 08 NAP cup (McCArthy, THoolen, Barham, Casey Leigh), and this year none will either. From the 05 class, I think Thomas was the only one (although I ma be wrong).

Dave, just because we lose, doesn't mean we weren't trying to win. MM often takes fringe players over first year players.

You do make a Good Point and You do have some Backing up for it. Those Thomas was the only 1 in 06 when we beat the Saints in OVERTIME.

But why would you play Fringe players ahead of Youngsters. Would Travel to Perth have something to do about it?

So much angst, relax a little.

The whole squad has trained through the summer, 29 got picked then 3 more miss out. Everytime you say put in a youngster like Beams you have to put out a Stanley or the like. I hope our 09 recruits turn into champs to a man but this is mostly a VFL development year for them with maybe Steele and another getting a number of AFL games under the belt.

Our 09 fate much more rests on the development of Stanley/Cook/Reid/Dawes/Brown/Wellingham/McCarthy/Rusling etc

In seasons gone by we were desperate to see these guys start because they were all potential and thats exciting. We build hopes and sometimes they dont quite meet our lofty expectations but these guys have still plenty to deliver. Enjoy watching those ones tonight they still have plenty of potential to improve, dont caste them aside.

Steele and Beams etc will be unveiled in good time. I think the coaching staff may be a little more across this issue than BF posters

To follow up the above (and let me add I am as desperate as any to see what the 09 guys have got) it easy to say I believe so and so should be playing but a coach then has to say this means another so and so should be out.

If you think any of those 3 should be playing tell us who you would leave out and why

look at the whinge already and its a pre season cup match.

Be excited about seeing some of our second and third year players as someone else mentioned.

Anthony, Wellingham, Reid, Dawes, Brown, Wood and Clarke and a few others.

No use showing off our joint 2009 brownlow winners of beams and sidebottom too early. Theres plenty of chances to come

1:Presti - Don't want him to get Injured Again
2:Cook - Punshment for his Scufflement

For Steele and Beams

What you said was you were not suprised by Malthouse leaving out our recent draftees because he often does this. Your contention is bunk because all Malty had ever done is run out sides made up of youngsters and fringe players because winning these matches has always been a low priority, hence our poor record in past pre season competitions.

In prevoius years if a youngster hasn't played it's becuse he wasn't fit and the players you've mentioned were not ie McCarthy was coming of a season with OP so he was brought along slowly.

I'l deal with the facts thanks, and just the facts.
