After the dissapointment of not getting warnock it is a must we take naita with 1.
We can get key forwrds with 17/19.

Re: No warnock MUST get Naitanui.

Or if Watts doesn't nominate you can get him next year:eek:;)

Re: No warnock MUST get Naitanui

Guys,
Warnock to Carlton is not a done deal if Freo doesn't come tp trade terms with the Blues. Dees have the upper hand because we have pick # 1. In any case, I'm not sure now if we would now want to pursue a guy would doesn't want to play for us anyway.

So, the bottom line is that Freo will decide who he plays with not Robbie Warnock.

Just a quick whisper in Jack's ear, play on in the 18's and don't nominate until next year.;)

That'll bugger Fremantle.

Re: No warnock MUST get Naitanui

After being anti drafting Natanui for a while, i have been swayed abit by Warnocks choice and with the probability that we will finish towards the bottom next year, it seems that we could hold off drafting Watts for a year and get Butcher aswell if we have a really poor year next year

Re: No warnock MUST get Naitanui

If we pick Naita we can't leave too much to chance with our forward line. We have to get at least 1 decent, tall KPF with 17 or 19 and a fast mid with the other. Even if we are lucky enough to get Watts next year it is still a gamble to just put our forward line on the backburner. We need KPFs NOW! regardless of getting Watts next year.

Does anyone know the best options for getting a decent tall KPF with 17 or 19?

There will be a couple of key position players around at this stage, some more suited to defense, some more suited to forward.

Trengrove may slide a little.
McKernan could still be there.
Lisle goes well, but isn't overly athletic.
Cornelius goes ok, but some don't see him as KF mold.

If Watts nominates, take him.

Re: No warnock MUST get Naitanui

It's key forwards that win Premierships for teams not ruckmen.

Take Watts with #1 and then a ruckmen with #17 or #19.
I'm with you on that one.

If Watts nominates then we have to take him (as has been my preference all along) but this Warnock business has ____ed things up a little.

I am kind of thinking that if we were a monty for snaring Watts next year (being in year 11 atm) and we got another tall KPF this year and also a quick mid then Naita is a good option for the long term. Naita wasn't even on the radar for me before the Warnock thing fell through (it will if anyone still has doubts) but now this scenario appeals to me. If this scenario could eventuate I would prefer it to the scenario of Watts nominating this year and then getting him with #1 and then a ruck with our latter picks. It allows for maximum development within our side and it also means that we will have multiple forward options added over a couple of years. The one thing I don't want us doing (if we get Watts this year) is resting on our laurels and thinking that one player will take our forward line to where it has to go because he wont.

The bottom line though IMO is we can't afford to lose Watts so if he nominates this year then we have no choice but to grab him.

Maybe I am just a bit peeved with Carlton/Freo atm and want to take Naita to get back at the Freo smartasses - who knows.

Re: No warnock MUST get Naitanui

Lewis Johnston, I think we might miss out on him come pick 17.

Re: No warnock MUST get Naitanui

tbh i dont see why everyone is so annoyed at not getting Warnock sure he would have been nice to have and shows some promise but he is still unproven i would much rather have PJ as our number 1 ruckmen who has showed alot this year

Re: No warnock MUST get Naitanui

PJ will be the best number 2 ruckmen in time but I don't think he is capable of holding down the number spot.

We should persist with Jamar as our number 1 ruckmen next season and PJ the back up ruck while Spencer develops or Meesen shows something and the ruckman we should get with either #17 or #19.

Yeah, like 2006 with the eagles, Cox was a passenger, we relied on our key forward...um...
hang on, maybe an athletic marking ruckman could be handy...

How will that bugger us?

We still have pick 3 in the draft ...it just means Harlett comes to the Dockers and hope Sandi continues being the dominant ruck he is?

I think Watts, Rich, Nat , Hartlett, Hurley, Ziebel ...all look reasonably decent to me.

Because he is going to be a pretty good ruckman that is why mate.

Melb are certainly not out of it ...if Carlton and Freo can not agree (eg if they try a 3rd round pick route) ...you could offer 19 or even get him in the PSD.

To be honest if I was a Melb supporter I think I would take Rich pick 1....AFL ready next year and I think the most likely to be a 100 games + player.

Anyway ball is probably with Carlton.

Re: No warnock MUST get Naitanui

I've come back around now to Natanui, but I'm still worried about the whole going home thing. He did say that doesn't really want to leave WA.

I don't think this should be a consideration when drafting. We should acquire the best option, regardless of where they come from.

First I wanted Nait, then Watts, then it was a split between Rich and Nait, and now I'm starting to lean towards Nait again.

Re: No warnock MUST get Naitanui

All this talk of Melbourne telling Watts not to nominate in this years draft, in order for us to select someone else is extremely optimistic IMO. I'm not sure of the answers to these questions but has he publicly stated he won't nominate unless MFC guarantee take him with #1? Is he a MFC supporter? Why have we come to this conclusion?

By all reports he wants to complete his VCE & you can't begrudge him that, but why would he listen to the MFC. Why would a young guy with the footballing world at his feet not nominate this year in the hope of being drafted to Melbourne next season. We need to be realistic, at the moment you would think we will be woden spooners again next season, but football is a funny game & there are so many things that could occur over the next 12 months to influence our ladder position and that of the other 15 teams.

Also I don't know how an up-coming footballer would take being told this. If I was in Watts position and the above scenario played out I would feel a little like our second choice. "Just sit out next year so we can get Naitaniu/Rich etc this year." I would say either pick me this year or I'll be picked up by someone else who values me higher. It's that simple

There are to many IF'S with the above scenario. We have the first pick and if Watts is the best player - draft him.

Re: No warnock MUST get Naitanui

He's playing in the WAFL Prelim today. Go Swannies :)

I want him to produce something outrageous today. In doing this, Schwab will not let the marketing opporunity pass, and the recruiters will look past Watts and see that Nait is optimal selection.

All aboard the double N-train :D

I have been in the same boat man... first Nait by a mile, then Watts by a mile, then Rich = Watts. Now I really want Nait but will be fine with any of those 3 we take as I will be able to see the logic in taking any

How long till it goes off the rails?
