Has to be, especially in the current sensitive environment and SPP getting 4 as a minimum base reference
Its much worse than SPP, its 5+ as a minimum, to be honest its the "perfect bump" for the tribunal to throw the book at him and send a message.

I wouldnt be surprised here with 6+ especially more so given the fact that Simpkin was looking knocked out after the bump.

How bloody good is Darcy Wilson looking for a 1st year player, good last week, outstanding today, with those wheels and elite disposal looks like being an absolute draft steal...early indications are the 2023 draft is going to be an exceptional draft.

Was he ours if we didn’t go Curtin?

Sure it is. Carlton were 16th in 2019. Then went 11th, 13th, 9th and made the prelim in 2023.

Its not much different to us going 18th in 2020, then going 15th, 14th, 10th?

Many on here made the argument that we were too young to push for finals last year. If we had a coach that didnt make some pretty horrendous decisions we should have made the finals.

We are another year older than our 2023 team and our only losses from last year are Doedee (11 games) and McAdam (7 games). We should be expecting at minimum a top 8 position and should be eyeing up a top 4 spot.

Of course there's a big difference.

Carlton spent 9 years out of finals accumulating talent. Their side today is built off the back of acquiring Cripps (2013), McKay, Curnow, Weitering (2015) and Walsh (2018) plus various trades on top of this.

That's the equivalent of us today having five core players in their prime we drafted in 2014 through 2019, years before we rebuilt. If you look back to who we actually drafted then, the quality isn't there.

I just don't think you can say "look how quickly Carlton rose up the ladder" when you're ignoring their rebuild took a decade to get the players that allowed them to rise.

We have a couple of core players in their prime, namely Dawson, Fogarty and Rankine. Everyone else is either beginning their decline (Walker, Smith, Laird, even Crouch turns 29 this year) or is very young and just not ready to take the next step.

The bulk of our talent - Rachele, Soligo, Thilthorpe, Curtin, Pedlar, Michalanney - none have reached 50 games yet.

At the start of last year McKay, Curnow, Weitering, Walsh, Cripps, Saad, Cerra... that's seven players under the age of 28 at the time in their prime with over 80 games of experience.

Our list will be in that position in 2 years, at the start of 2026

Wasn't Melbourne rebuilding for a decade or more prior to that? Same with Brisbane?

Melbourne’s rebuild started from 2015 (were 17th in 2014). They did make a Preliminary Final in 2018.

Brisbane’s rebuild started from 2018 (they were bottom in 2017 but won 5 games). They played in a Preliminary Final in 2020 (COVID year which benefited them from a home ground perspective).

We should be pushing for top 6 this year.

Our best 22, will have 11 first round picks, we should be good.

“Matty Nicks knew what he was in for when he was coming. We were very clear that we wanted to do a rebuild, and an aggressive rebuild at that, we knew we had to move on a few of our older players and try some of our younger players that haven’t been exposed to AFL football in the last two years,” Ricciuto said.

Got any quotes prior to the 2020 season?

Interesting - so you feel that both you and WCE think this will be a very swift turnaround?

I'd be curious what those who are closer to that club would think.

The major difference between us going after Grundy and Eagles after English is they already have 2 seasons at the bottom behind them. We were chasing Grundy to stay in the hunt, they'll be chasing experienced talent to return to it.

agree with all this - especially going from 3rd oldest to 3rd youngest. How in the hell can that not be interpreted as going the hard rebuild? - except complete rebuilds can never be done in 3 years. Assuming we continue moving up (5-7 this year) we are basically on track for the perfectly templated rebuild.

“I’m not gonna jump ship now, I’m here to take us through the lows which we are now and maybe next year as well, and then as we come out of that with more money in our salary cap we can start approaching players (DAWSON, RANKINE, LAST YEAR DAY, REDMAN and other A Grade misses) and get some extra games into these kids, we’ll come out of it just fine on the other side.

“We’ll probably look back and think ‘gee, that was a rough couple of years at the footy club’, but I’m confident we’ve got the right plan at the footy club and the right people in place.

“We’ll keep improving, we’ll keep trying to bring new people (BURGESS, BURNS, VB, RAHILLY,) in to better our football department ...

Adelaide has handed debuts to eight players this season and used a total of 37 players, the most in the AFL along with Sydney and the Western Bulldogs.

Matty Nicks knew what he was in for when he was coming. We were very clear that we wanted to do a rebuild, and an aggressive rebuild at that, we knew we had to move on a few of our older players and try some of our younger players that haven’t been exposed to AFL football in the last two years,” Ricciuto said.

LOL, August 11, 2020 Adelaide Crows 0-11. H8ndsight rebuild calls are not a contra po7nt to the argument against you. The fact it was never mentioned prior to 2020 unfolding is a point against your argument.

Weagles are in for years of pain. Mc Govern 32 next mth, Darling and Cripps 32 mid year, Yeo 31 this year, Kelly 30 this year. Barrass 29 this year. Its actually embarrassing watching almost 32 yo Gaff still trying to run.

now THEY are the team that delayed the rebuild for far too long and still havent got it right. Why not trade Yeo away. Give Gaff away (if possible). Ditto Darling. They last played finals 2020 and kept playing their golden oldies (when fit) in the last 2 years when they won 5 games TOTAL. Now that is shite list management and strategy, and misjudging where you are at. They wont be in contention for finals for another half decade minimum IMO

Crows have nailed the rebuild years faster than the Weagles. Surely this cant be questioned?

Of course it can be questioned, mostly because they're only 2 years in and we won't be able to compare apples and apples for 2-3 years. It's ridiculous to suggest it can't be and that we've nailed ours, given we've not even played finals yet, let alone won one.

Saying that collective minds was a bad idea in 2018 is different that than saying its a bad idea in September of 2017.

The injuries masked this in 2018, the tension was clearly there and the outcome was 2019. And the camp was post 2017 after the Grand Final so the duration made it worst, it should have been killed at the start of 2018 when the "rumours" started.

Why? We were still Finals contention in 2019 and even started that year as one of the premiership favourite after suffering a lot of injuries the previous year and Nicks was appointed senior coach after 2019.

If yo7 want to post evidence that it was a planned plummet to near the bottom, you'll need to provide something from before we plummeted. Having Roo excuse himself after the event is irrelevant. Pretty simple really, basic provision of evidence knowledge.

Riley Bonner has played well.

So you have insider knowledge to state otherwise? He said Nicks was appointed knowing we were going to do a full list rebuild and not just a rebuild.

Ok this should be good. What are your predictions for the Weagles in 2024 and 2025.

Me:

2024 - almost certain bottom 2. Wins overs/unders the lowest of ANY team at 4.5 (Kangas 5.5 and then Hawks 8.5) AND still playing a large bunch of golden oldies 3 (or more) years into rebuild.

2025 - VERY probable bottom 4.

2026 onwards - 5/6 of their best players and Kelly and Barrass on last legs. Missing finals for at least another 3 years
