From the HS this morning

"Brad Hill’s partner will return to Melbourne next year and the only question is whether the Dockers relent and allow him to return this year or next to be with her."

I don't know why certain players put up with this.
He could/should replace her in a nano second (assuming there are no kids involved).

Well we had a good run with all the "family is more important than work" positivity, right up to the point where a woman was involved. Shocked to be sitting here I tell ya ;)

I've honestly never thought about what 'the integrity of contracts' is.

Either party is free to ask to amend the contract and if they both agree then that's their business, not a third party like you or I.

The trouble is, they rarely agree and in a lot of cases have to bend over.

I realise things change and stuff happens, but in a lot of cases it's just a player
changing his mind.

How would you feel if Simmo decided to leave for North Melbourne?
Still think we would be compensated?

I’d be annoyed if Simmo left for Norf, and I don’t think we’d be adequately compensated if compensated at all.

And still, I would rather have a worse coach who was desperate to be here than have Adam Simpson coaching us with his heart not in it and pining for another team. If he just had a preference to go to Victoria but could still make it work, that’s one thing, but forcing someone to remain in a situation that has become untenable just because both parties signed something years ago is an archaic way to look at running a business.

Does Dom Sheed kick the Grand Final winning goal if we’d held Matt Priddis to his 2018 contract because that was the exact letter of the law of what he signed? Why would any staff come to West Coast in future if we refused to let Rawlings take his promotion at Norf? If we held Sam Mitchell here for four years because of the contract, would any quality assistant coaches race to move to Perth in future? I doubt it.

We went through this last year so I'll answer a different question. I didn't like losing Sam Mitchell. I would have loved it if he stayed to see out his contract and more. For whatever reason, circumstances changed and he didn't.

So if you want to go back and look at the circumstances of how he came and left - do you think he was dishonest in signing a contract with us? I can't answer that, but I tend to think that he and his family intended to stay here for the full 4 years when they made that decision so it's hard to be angry with him about it.

What is anyone supposed to do in that situation? Should Sam Mitchell have not asked the question? Should he have told his family to suck it up? Should the club have told Mitchell that they might not be able to force him to honour his contract but they can hold him to and block him working at another club?

The thing about well-run clubs is they have a good sense for when to hold and when to fold. Letting Mitchell go for no compensation may seem like a bad business decision but you're also trying to present a good culture to those prospective people who will be thinking about coming to the club later on. Not putting on a big hissyfit about 'the integrity of contracts' is just the byproduct of adults making adult decisions. You make the best decision you can at the time even if that means a loss.

If you scroll up a handful of posts you’ll see several people talking about the pressure they felt at various points in their lives and the need to remove themselves from certain situations. Earning a good salary doesn’t stop you from feeling certain things. Mental health problems don’t discriminate, it doesn’t quickly check your bank account before deciding you’re a suitable candidate. Somebody wanting to be closer to their family is a perfectly valid thing to want, but because their partner is a footballer they don’t get that?

If the partner wants to go home for family reasons and the player is happy to, what’s the issue? If the partner wants to go home but the player doesn’t want to, that’s for them to sort out privately. Who could possibly be annoyed at the off field lives of the partner of a footballer from a different team?
Life seems to adjust with money. The more you earn the less you seem to have. I think I had more excess cash when I was earning half what I do now. I bet some players would go home for less money if it meant being close to family and friends.

Could you image having to play for fremantle? Not enough money in the world for me...

Just so people know the suicide rates in Australia are absolutely fabricated bulls**t. The rate is much higher than the bureau of statistics releases because the way the coroner acts and how the autopsy's are done they do everything they can to rule it as anything other than suicide. They basically try to rule in the favour of anything other than suicide first. Accidental death, 'Accident' etc.

The father of one of my kids friends hung himself in his garage. Was ruled as accidental death and not reported as he 'slipped' off the two step ladder below him and just happened to have his head in a rope tied around a beam and around his neck at the same time with an empty bottle of spirits on the table. (in his lounge room during the day while the kids were at school and his wife was at work)

Personally think you could double the attributed numbers quite easily and still not be at the real mark here in Australia.
That's horrible. It's also the one vehicle accident on a straight road into a tree. They understate it and the figures are still way too high. Every suicide has a ripple effect and I think if we keep trying to talk about those feelings and support each other hopefully less people will do it. This board and bigfooty in general has been great by providing the contacts for mental health services. It's a big thing to talk about but it's important that we all know where to turn to if we need it.

Well said. Who knows, in the future Mitchell may even by in the running for the senior coach gig at West Coast? At least the door will still be open for him.

Players want the right to free agency and for clubs to act on their home sickness during contracts is only fair if the clubs have the right to trade a player where ever while under contract.

My view is remove the free agency after x number of years, all players should be able to nominate where they sign after a contract ends, how ever clubs should have to ability to move a player where ever they like while in contract.

The players have too much power in the current set up.

It’s our time now mfers.

And maybe, you know, she loves him!

It's his job that he's extremely well paid for and she's buggering off.
She did come over here in the first place cos he was like ah homesick. He was highly paid in Melbourne too.

I was critical of Tim Kelly requesting a trade back home after being in Geelong for a year and
assuring them he would be OK to move interstate.

Circumstances change believe it or not.

I thought I could cope living alone 1500km from my family, working 2 jobs and studying full time at uni. Turns out I can’t, so I’m changing it.

"My point is we have fyfe and Walters who are getting older. We need to try and strike now and win a flag while we still have these guys."

If you ever feel down, go for a laugh on the Freo board.

Always a good pick me up over there.

Enjoying the derby pre-match thread that has an in depth analysis of the % of frees the umpires named to officiate have given Freo in the PAST... you couldn't even make this stuff up hahaha

Some Free Kick and Umpire stats for those that are interested;

3 - Leigh Fisher
Has umpired 15 Fremantle games.
The total Free Kicks For and Against in those 15 games is 218 For vs 280 Against.
Freo have won the Free Kicks in 2 of those 15, had equal Free Kicks in 2 and lost the Free Kicks in 11 of the 15.

22 - Nathan Williamson
11 Freo games.
206 FF vs 222 FA.
Won FKs in 4, lost in 7.

32 - Jacob Mollison
15 Freo games.
282 FF vs 307 FA.
Won FKs in 4, equal in 1, lost in 10.

Additionally, in Western Derbies during Lyon's tenure (2012-) our Free Kicks stats are;
Total Free Kicks in 15 games, 245 Frees For vs 298 Frees Against.
Won the Free Kicks in 5, and lost the Free Kicks in 10.

hahahahahahahha holy shite. They're really clutching at straws!

I wonder who gets paid more...……….

Live off her wage then.

I’m not sure what’s hard to grasp about this concept.

Sometimes two people want to spend their future together so they make decisions that will be mutually beneficial to their partnership. Hill’s options aren’t play for Fremantle or never earn a cent for the rest of his life. He could just go get paid by a Victorian club, she’d be happier, in turn he’d probably be happier, everyone wins.

I don’t understand this angle of “if you’re unhappy in the scenario you’re in that’s too bad, because your partner is well paid.”
